6020. INFANTRY WEAPONS<br />

1. Small Arms<br />

a. Safety precautions will be strictly adhered to as prescribed by<br />

appropriate field manuals, directives in the MCO 3570 series, and this Order.<br />

b. Overhead or flanking-fire is authorized only as prescribed by directives<br />

in the MCO 3570 series, appropriate firing tables and field manuals,<br />

and approved by the RCO.<br />

2. Machine Guns<br />

a. Safety precautions shall be strictly adhered to as prescribed by<br />

appropriate field and technical manuals, directives in the MCO 3570 series,<br />

and this Order. All personnel are required to wear helmets, flak jackets and<br />

hearing protection at all times during firing.<br />

b. Machine guns shall remain in Condition 4 while in a cold status.<br />

c. After machine guns are fired, the RSO shall ensure all weapons are<br />

clear, and in a Condition 4 status.<br />

d. The RSO shall ensure proper settings of required headspace and timing<br />

on all guns prior to firing.<br />

e. No one is allowed forward of any gun emplacement, for any purpose,<br />

until authorized by the RSO. This does not apply to tactical exercises<br />

involving overhead or flanking-fire.<br />

f. Machine guns may be fired over unprotected individuals in firing<br />

exercises, provided the provisions of directives in the MCO 3570 series,<br />

appropriate firing tables, and field manuals are followed and approved by<br />

the RCO.<br />

3. Mortars (60mm and 81mm). Refer to Appendix D of this Order and approved<br />

SDZs and Data Cards for mortar training requirements.<br />

4. Rockets and Missiles. Safety precautions shall be strictly adhered to as<br />

prescribed in appropriate field and training manuals, directives in the MCO<br />

3570 series, and this Order. All ground personnel engaged in the firing of<br />

rockets and missiles are required to wear helmets, flak jackets, and hearing<br />

protection at all times during firing.<br />

5. Grenades. Grenade encompasses all types of grenades, to include the<br />

40mm grenade family, rifle grenades and hand grenades. Refer to FM 23-30,<br />

Grenades and Pyrotechnic Signals, [reference (i)] and the most current<br />

edition of directives in the MCO 3570 series [references (a) and (b)].<br />

a. Fragmentation, offensive, and WP hand grenade duds shall be rendered<br />

safe or destroyed by qualified EOD personnel. If a dud occurs, the RSO shall<br />

order, “cease fire,” record the time the dud occurred, keep all troops under<br />

cover, and notify LONGRIFLE, who will contact EOD for assistance. EOD will<br />

observe a minimum 30-minute waiting period. After the waiting period, the<br />

EOD Team will clear the dud and inform the RSO when the range is clear.<br />
