Range Safety<br />

Officer (RSO)<br />

A designated individual who has attended the <strong>Camp</strong><br />

<strong>Pendleton</strong> Range Safety Certification Course and has been<br />

designated by their command to act as an RSO. The RSO<br />

is assigned by the OIC of Firing to assist in<br />

enforcing all safety measures while operating in <strong>Camp</strong><br />

<strong>Pendleton</strong> ranges and training areas.<br />

Restricted<br />

Airspace/Area<br />

Airspace designated under Federal Aviation Regulations,<br />

Part 73, within which the flight of non-participating<br />

aircraft, while not wholly prohibited is subject to<br />

restriction.<br />

Special Use<br />

Airspace (SUA)<br />

Airspace in which aviation activities must be confined<br />

because of their nature and where limitations may be<br />

imposed on aircraft operations that are not a part of<br />

those activities. Types of SUA include Restricted Areas,<br />

CFAs, MOAs, and Warning Areas.<br />

Surface Danger<br />

Zone (SDZ)<br />

The ground and airspace designated within the training<br />

complex (to include associated safety areas) for<br />

vertical and lateral containment of projectiles, fragments,<br />

debris, and components resulting from the firing,<br />

launching, or detonation of weapon systems to include<br />

explosives and demolitions.<br />

Survey Control<br />

Point<br />

A permanent or semi-permanent concrete or brass marker<br />

placed to denote a topographical reference point.<br />

Terrain Flight<br />

(TERF) Route/Area<br />

A Route/Area used for helicopter low altitude navigation<br />

training.<br />

TNT Equivalent<br />

Considering the peak overpressure produced by detonation of<br />

a given weight of TNT as 100 percent, the TNT equivalency<br />

of an explosive is the amount of overpressure produced<br />

by detonation of an identical quantity of explosive<br />

compound under comparable conditions, expressed as a<br />

percentage.<br />

Training Area<br />

All areas on <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Pendleton</strong> outside of cantonment<br />

and impact area <strong>bo</strong>undaries.<br />

Visual Flight<br />

Rules (VFR)<br />

Aircraft operations conducted under visual flight<br />

rules.<br />
