Notice to <strong>Marine</strong>rs<br />

(NOTMAR)<br />

A publication to mariners and vessels warning of<br />

conditions dangerous to navigation, such as live-firing or<br />

amphibious exercises.<br />

NBC<br />

Nuclear, Biological, Chemical<br />

NBC Agents<br />

Devices, biological agents and chemicals that may<br />

cause damage, incapacity, injury, sickness, or death.<br />

Observation Post<br />

(OP)<br />

A designated area/point from which impacting<br />

ordnance may be observed.<br />

Officer In Charge<br />

(OIC)<br />

An individual designated by the Commanding Officer of<br />

the training unit who assumes responsibility for all<br />

aspects of training to include, but not limited to livefire,<br />

paradrops, or air exercises.<br />

Overhead-Fire<br />

The firing of projectiles over the heads of personnel, or<br />

over areas in which the presence of personnel is<br />

suspected (must be approved in advance by the Range Control<br />

Officer).<br />

Paradrop<br />

The controlled aerial delivery of personnel or<br />

equipment by parachute.<br />

POL<br />

Petroleum, oil, and lubricants<br />

Position Commander<br />

Officer in command of an artillery position.<br />

Pyrotechnics<br />

Non-injury causing smoke or signals, either flares or<br />

grenades. White phosphorous is not considered a<br />

pyrotechnic.<br />

Range<br />

A training facility designated for live-fire, practice<br />

firing of weapons, demolitions, flame weapons, or fire<br />

and maneuver exercises.<br />

Range Guard<br />

An individual designated to maintain surveillance<br />

over an assigned locale to prohibit unauthorized entry<br />

into a surface danger area, and to give the alarm in the<br />

event that entry is detected.<br />
