Dedicated Impact<br />

Area<br />

Impact area supporting live-fire of dud-producing ordnance<br />

(e.g., Quebec, Whiskey, and Zulu Impact Areas).<br />

Drop Zone (DZ)<br />

A tactical landing zone in which personnel or cargo<br />

paradrops are authorized.<br />

Dud<br />

Ammunition of any caliber or weight that has been fired,<br />

placed, dropped, thrown or launched, but which fails to<br />

function as designed.<br />

FCLP<br />

Field Carrier Landing Practice<br />

Field Training<br />

Facilities<br />

Those areas designated for a specific type of training,<br />

normally not requiring the use of live ordnance (e.g.,<br />

rappel towers, combat towns).<br />

Fire and Maneuver<br />

Range<br />

Range on which troop movement and live-firing may be<br />

conducted simultaneously.<br />

Fire Danger Rating<br />

(FDR)<br />

National rating based on weather conditions and fire<br />

burning indexes describing the potential for wildland fire<br />

ignition, rate of spread, and suppression probability.<br />

Firing Lane<br />

The area within which a weapon system is fired. It<br />

consists of a start firing line, cease-firing disarm line,<br />

and left and right limits of fire.<br />

Firing Line or<br />

Point<br />

The location from which a weapon is fired at a target or<br />

into an impact area.<br />

Flat Trajectory/<br />

High Velocity<br />

Weapons<br />

Recoilless rifles, tank guns, LAV 25mm guns, and artillery<br />

(when conducting direct-fire operations).<br />

Formal School<br />

A school or a single course conducted by a school, which<br />

produces, as a result of its Program of Instruction (POI),<br />

a <strong>Marine</strong> qualified in a Military Occupational Specialty<br />

(MOS). This definition includes Weapons and Field Training<br />

Battalion (WFTBN), the Range Coach and Marksmanship<br />

Instructor, and Martial Arts Instructor/Trainer Courses<br />

conducted by 1 st <strong>Marine</strong> Division.<br />
