Wellness Recovery Action Planning ‐ Wellness<br />
Recovery Action Planning (WRAP) training will be held<br />
at <strong>Pathways</strong> (901 S. New Hope Rd., Gastonia NC) on<br />
Friday, Dec. 16, 2011 from 9am‐4pm. WRAP is a<br />
six‐hour training on a recovery‐based program for<br />
consumers of mental health and substance abuse<br />
services. Nelson Connor and Todd McLean from<br />
<strong>Pathways</strong> will be presenting the program. Consumers,<br />
Direct‐Care Staff, Peer Specialists, Family Members, and<br />
Provider Administrators are invited to attend this<br />

Attention –Information Regarding Extension of<br />
Medicaid CAP‐MR/DD Waiver‐ The Division of<br />
MH/DD/SAS held four conference calls on Tuesday,<br />
Oct. 25, 2011 for I/DD Targeted Case <strong>Management</strong><br />
agencies and Local <strong>Management</strong> Entities (LMEs) to<br />
explain how the extension of the Community<br />
Alternatives Program for Mental Retardation/<br />
Developmental Disabilities (CAP‐MR/DD) waiver will<br />
effect authorizations, CNRs, revisions, etc. Information<br />
shared at this meeting will be posted soon as an<br />
Implementation Update on the Division of MH/DD/SAS<br />
website http://www.ncdhhs.gov/mhddsas/ and as a<br />
Special Medicaid Bulletin on the DMA website<br />
http://www.ncdhhs.gov/dma/. <strong>Pathways</strong> will send<br />
notification when this information is posted and<br />
providers are also encouraged to check these websites<br />

Training Opportunities<br />
Addiction and Recovery Conference ‐ The Carolinas<br />
Conference on Addiction and Recovery will be held Nov.<br />
9‐11, 2011 (Pre‐conference training on Nov. 9). This<br />
event is sponsored by Addiction Recovery Institute,<br />
Burke Council on Alcoholism and Chemical Dependency,<br />
and The Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies, UNC, Chapel<br />

Workplace Violence Awareness Training ‐<br />
Workplace Violence is an act of aggression, physical<br />
assault, or threatening behavior that occurs in a work<br />
setting and causes physical or emotional harm to<br />
consumers, coworkers, or managers. Because of the<br />
success of last year’s training, the training is being<br />
offered again. The training will be held in the <strong>Pathways</strong><br />
Auditorium on Nov. 17 at 2pm and is free of charge to<br />
all provider agencies and staff. It is highly<br />
recommended that all safety officers attend. If you have<br />

System of Care Child & Family Team Trainings –<br />
The Arc of Gaston County will be offering the System of<br />
Care Child & Family Team trainings “Child & Family<br />
Teams Part 1”, Nov. 16‐17, 2011. (click here for flyer<br />
and registration form) and “An Introduction to Child and<br />
Family Teams From the Family’s Perspective: Part 2‐‐<br />
A Cross Systems Approach to Facilitating Family Driven<br />

Understanding Students In Poverty – Communities<br />
in Schools of Cleveland County will host “Understanding<br />
Students in Poverty” on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 at First<br />
Baptist Church of Kings Mountain, 505 West King<br />
Street, Kings Mountain, NC 28086. This training<br />
includes the work of Dr. Ruby Payne and Eric<br />
Jenson. The training is designed for mentors,<br />
community leaders, educators, community of faith<br />
members, site coordinators and site leaders, and<br />
anyone working with individuals who live in poverty.<br />
The training will be offered twice – in a morning and<br />
afternoon session. Training begins promptly at the start<br />

NC Council Trainings ‐ A number of training events are<br />
available for registration, such as “Providing<br />
Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services (PSR): A Model for<br />

Community Based Overdose Prevention<br />
Community Care of North Carolina and Gaston<br />
Community <strong>Health</strong>care Commission are sponsoring a<br />
presentation by Fred W. Brason, II of Project Lazurus.<br />
The event will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at<br />
<strong>Pathways</strong> Auditorium, 901 S. New Hope Rd. Gastonia NC<br />
from 8am‐10:30am. Critical Access <strong>Behavioral</strong><br />
<strong>Health</strong>care Agencies (CABHAs) are asked to send a<br />

Person Centered Thinking Training – There are two<br />
upcoming trainings being held locally:<br />
Nov. 10‐11, 2011, 9am‐4:30pm each day<br />
(8:30am registration). This training is hosted by<br />
Focus Point, Inc. and Steps Toward Strength in<br />
compliance with the service definitions requiring<br />
the 12‐Hour Person Centered Thinking training<br />
approved by the National Learning Community for<br />
Person Centered Practice. This training will be held<br />
at 102 N. Yates Street Gastonia, NC 28052. For more<br />

Local Social Security Office Information ‐ On Friday,<br />
Nov. 25 , all Social Security field offices, including the<br />
Gastonia office, will be closed to the public. Members<br />
of the public can find many services and get up‐to‐date<br />
information online at www.socialsecurity.gov or by<br />
calling 1‐800‐772‐1213 (TTY 1‐800‐325‐0778). The<br />
Gastonia Social Security Office is normally open Monday<br />
‐Friday, 9am‐3:30pm and is located at 609 Cotton<br />
Blossom Circle, Gastonia NC.

Wrapping for a Cause – The Arc of Gaston County will<br />
be partnering with Special Olympics of Gaston County<br />
for the seventh year to wrap your gifts at Christmas.<br />
Thanks to the management team at Westfield Eastridge,<br />
we are in the final stages of preparation. The wrapping<br />
booth will be open from Saturday, Dec. 10 through<br />
Christmas Eve. Wrapping is done for donations and<br />
100% of the proceeds benefit citizens in Gaston County<br />

Arc of Gaston County’s Operation Santa and<br />
Santa’s Helpers – The Arc of Gaston County will be<br />
accepting applications for Christmas assistance through<br />
Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011. Individuals must be a Gaston<br />
County resident and have a developmental disability<br />
diagnosis. If you or someone you know may need help<br />
this holiday season, click here for an application form. If<br />
you or someone you know would be interested in<br />
providing assistance to a person or two, click here for a<br />

Operation Santa Claus ‐ For over 45 years, The<br />
Mental <strong>Health</strong> Association in Cleveland County, Inc. has<br />
sponsored “Operation Santa Claus” for those living with<br />
a severe and persistent mental illness. Last year over<br />
200 Cleveland County residents received a special gift at<br />
Christmastime through this program. Please help to<br />
make this the most successful “Operation Santa Claus”<br />

Autism Society and AMC Theatres Present Special<br />
Sensory Films Presentation ‐ The Autism Society and<br />

<strong>Pathways</strong> Wants You To Know...<br />
National Emergency Alert System Test ‐ On Nov.9,<br />
2011, at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time the Federal<br />
Communications Commission and FEMA will conduct<br />
the first‐ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert<br />
System (EAS). An announcement will come on every TV<br />
and radio channel indicating that there is an<br />
emergency. This will only be a test and you do not need<br />
to take any action. The purpose of this test is to find out<br />
how well the EAS can alert the public about dangers to<br />
life and property in the event of an actual emergency.<br />
International Survivors of Suicide Day‐‐Annual<br />
Day of Healing for Bereavement After Suicide ‐<br />
Survivors of suicide loss come together in communities<br />
around the world and online every year on the third<br />
Saturday in November for mutual support and practical<br />
guidance on coping with grief after suicide. On<br />
Saturday, Nov. 19th, <strong>Pathways</strong> will be hosting a healing<br />
conference as part of this worldwide event. The event<br />
will begin at 12:45 pm at the <strong>Pathways</strong> Auditorium, 901<br />
