Pathways Checkwrite Schedule for the 2011
Holidays‐ Contract checks for the week of
Thanksgiving will be dated and mailed Wednesday,
Nov. 23, 2011. Pathways offices will be closed for the
Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday and Friday,
Nov. 24‐25, 2011. Contract checks for the week of
Christmas will be dated and mailed on Friday, Dec. 23,
2011. Pathways offices will be closed for the Christmas
holiday on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 26‐27, 2011.
Contract checks for the New Year’s holiday will be
dated and mailed on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011. Pathways
offices will be closed for the New Year’s holiday on
Monday, Jan. 2, 2012. Please plan appropriately based
on this schedule.
Wellness Recovery Action Planning ‐ Wellness
Recovery Action Planning (WRAP) training will be held
at Pathways (901 S. New Hope Rd., Gastonia NC) on
Friday, Dec. 16, 2011 from 9am‐4pm. WRAP is a
six‐hour training on a recovery‐based program for
consumers of mental health and substance abuse
services. Nelson Connor and Todd McLean from
Pathways will be presenting the program. Consumers,
Direct‐Care Staff, Peer Specialists, Family Members, and
Provider Administrators are invited to attend this
training. Email or call Pam Bumgarner at

Dec. 12 to register. Training and materials are free.
Provider Information
Attention –Information Regarding Extension of
Medicaid CAP‐MR/DD Waiver‐ The Division of
MH/DD/SAS held four conference calls on Tuesday,
Oct. 25, 2011 for I/DD Targeted Case Management
agencies and Local Management Entities (LMEs) to
explain how the extension of the Community
Alternatives Program for Mental Retardation/
Developmental Disabilities (CAP‐MR/DD) waiver will
effect authorizations, CNRs, revisions, etc. Information
shared at this meeting will be posted soon as an
Implementation Update on the Division of MH/DD/SAS
website http://www.ncdhhs.gov/mhddsas/ and as a
Special Medicaid Bulletin on the DMA website
http://www.ncdhhs.gov/dma/. Pathways will send
notification when this information is posted and
providers are also encouraged to check these websites

Training Opportunities
Addiction and Recovery Conference ‐ The Carolinas
Conference on Addiction and Recovery will be held Nov.
9‐11, 2011 (Pre‐conference training on Nov. 9). This
event is sponsored by Addiction Recovery Institute,
Burke Council on Alcoholism and Chemical Dependency,
and The Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies, UNC, Chapel

Workplace Violence Awareness Training ‐
Workplace Violence is an act of aggression, physical
assault, or threatening behavior that occurs in a work
setting and causes physical or emotional harm to
consumers, coworkers, or managers. Because of the
success of last year’s training, the training is being
offered again. The training will be held in the Pathways
Auditorium on Nov. 17 at 2pm and is free of charge to
all provider agencies and staff. It is highly
recommended that all safety officers attend. If you have

System of Care Child & Family Team Trainings –
The Arc of Gaston County will be offering the System of
Care Child & Family Team trainings “Child & Family
Teams Part 1”, Nov. 16‐17, 2011. (click here for flyer
and registration form) and “An Introduction to Child and
Family Teams From the Family’s Perspective: Part 2‐‐
A Cross Systems Approach to Facilitating Family Driven
Meetings”, Nov. 29‐30, 2011. Both trainings will be
held at the Gaston County Police Dept—Community

Understanding Students In Poverty – Communities
in Schools of Cleveland County will host “Understanding
Students in Poverty” on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 at First
Baptist Church of Kings Mountain, 505 West King
Street, Kings Mountain, NC 28086. This training
includes the work of Dr. Ruby Payne and Eric
Jenson. The training is designed for mentors,
community leaders, educators, community of faith
members, site coordinators and site leaders, and
anyone working with individuals who live in poverty.
The training will be offered twice – in a morning and
afternoon session. Training begins promptly at the start

NC Council Trainings ‐ A number of training events are

Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services (PSR): A Model for

Community Based Overdose Prevention
Community Care of North Carolina and Gaston
Community Healthcare Commission are sponsoring a
presentation by Fred W. Brason, II of Project Lazurus.
The event will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at
Pathways Auditorium, 901 S. New Hope Rd. Gastonia NC
from 8am‐10:30am. Critical Access Behavioral
Healthcare Agencies (CABHAs) are asked to send a

Person Centered Thinking Training – There are two
upcoming trainings being held locally:
Nov. 10‐11, 2011, 9am‐4:30pm each day
(8:30am registration). This training is hosted by
Focus Point, Inc. and Steps Toward Strength in
compliance with the service definitions requiring
the 12‐Hour Person Centered Thinking training
approved by the National Learning Community for
Person Centered Practice. This training will be held
at 102 N. Yates Street Gastonia, NC 28052. For more

Local Social Security Office Information ‐ On Friday,
Nov. 25 , all Social Security field offices, including the
Gastonia office, will be closed to the public. Members
of the public can find many services and get up‐to‐date
information online at www.socialsecurity.gov or by
calling 1‐800‐772‐1213 (TTY 1‐800‐325‐0778). The
Gastonia Social Security Office is normally open Monday
‐Friday, 9am‐3:30pm and is located at 609 Cotton
Blossom Circle, Gastonia NC.

Wrapping for a Cause – The Arc of Gaston County will
be partnering with Special Olympics of Gaston County
for the seventh year to wrap your gifts at Christmas.
Thanks to the management team at Westfield Eastridge,
we are in the final stages of preparation. The wrapping
booth will be open from Saturday, Dec. 10 through
Christmas Eve. Wrapping is done for donations and
100% of the proceeds benefit citizens in Gaston County
with development disabilities. For more information,

Arc of Gaston County’s Operation Santa and
Santa’s Helpers – The Arc of Gaston County will be
accepting applications for Christmas assistance through
Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011. Individuals must be a Gaston
County resident and have a developmental disability
diagnosis. If you or someone you know may need help
this holiday season, click here for an application form. If
you or someone you know would be interested in
providing assistance to a person or two, click here for a

Operation Santa Claus ‐ For over 45 years, The
Mental Health Association in Cleveland County, Inc. has
sponsored “Operation Santa Claus” for those living with
a severe and persistent mental illness. Last year over
200 Cleveland County residents received a special gift at
Christmastime through this program. Please help to
make this the most successful “Operation Santa Claus”

Sensory Films Presentation ‐ The Autism Society and

Pathways Wants You To Know...
National Emergency Alert System Test ‐ On Nov.9,
2011, at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time the Federal
Communications Commission and FEMA will conduct
the first‐ever nationwide test of the Emergency Alert
System (EAS). An announcement will come on every TV
and radio channel indicating that there is an
emergency. This will only be a test and you do not need
to take any action. The purpose of this test is to find out
how well the EAS can alert the public about dangers to
life and property in the event of an actual emergency.
International Survivors of Suicide Day‐‐Annual
Day of Healing for Bereavement After Suicide ‐
Survivors of suicide loss come together in communities
around the world and online every year on the third
Saturday in November for mutual support and practical
guidance on coping with grief after suicide. On
Saturday, Nov. 19th, Pathways will be hosting a healing
conference as part of this worldwide event. The event
will begin at 12:45 pm at the Pathways Auditorium, 901
S. New Hope Rd., Gastonia NC 28054. To learn more
