In the spring of 2000, Fumiko Ishioka, the curator of
a small Holocaust education centre in Tokyo, received
a shipment from the Auschwitz museum which
included an empty suitcase marked “Hana Brady,
May 16, 1931, Orphan”. Fumiko and the children at
the centre decided to find out what became of Hana.
The heartbreaking story they uncovered of a brave
young girl killed in the Holocaust and survived only
by her brother was captured in Karen Levine’s book
that the world took into its heart.
The response since Hana’s Suitcase was published in
the spring of 2002 has been overwhelming. Hana’s
story has spread across the globe. It’s been translated
into dozens of languages, honored with numerous
awards, adapted for the stage, and transformed into
several films. The UN uses it in over 100 outposts,
Archbishop Desmond Tutu wrote a foreword, and
Michelle Obama was presented with a copy during
an official visit to Prague. To commemorate the
tenth anniversary, this new book includes:
• Commemorative letters from Karen, Fumiko, and George
• Reaction from readers around the world
Rachel’s Secret
By Shelly Sanders
Rachel, a Jew, and Sergei, a Christian, find their worlds torn apart by
violence in pre-Revolutionary Russia
Inspired by real events
themes: european history, pogroms, jewish-christian relations
about the author
SHELLY SANDERS has worked as a freelance writer
for almost 20 years. Topics she’s covered include mental
and physical disorders, environmentally friendly design,
and real estate trends. With an honors degree in English
and a degree in journalism, she is now working on a
certificate in creative writing. Shelly lives in Toronto
with her husband, three children, two dogs, and two
lizards.
Rachel is a Jew living in Kishinev, Russia. At
fourteen, Rachel knows that she wants more from
life than the traditional role of wife and mother. She
has dreams of being a writer. But everything is put
on hold when a young Christian man is murdered
and Rachel is forced to keep the murderer’s identity
a secret. Tensions mount as the Christians’ distrust of
the Jews is fueled by prejudice and rumor.
While Rachel keeps the truth to herself, she watches
as lies and anti-Jewish propaganda leap off the
pages of the local newspaper, inciting Christians to
riot against the Jews. Violence breaks out on Easter
Sunday, 1903, and when it finally ends, Rachel finds
that the person she loves most is dead and that her
home has been destroyed. As she struggles to survive
the aftermath of the riots – or pogroms – support
comes from someone totally unexpected, when a
young Christian named Sergei turns against his
father, a police officer complicit in the riots, to help
Rachel.
With everything against them, the two young people
find comfort in the bond that is growing between
them, one of the few signs of goodness and hope in a
time of chaos and violence.
Support the Girls Bra Art for Breast Health
Compiled by the West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation
Can a book about breast health be both beautiful and funny? This one is.
When the women from a community in Central
Ontario needed to raise funds to buy a mammogram
machine for the local hospital, it wasn’t laughter that
led them to the “Art Bra” project. More likely, it
was the fear of breast cancer and the need for early
detection that motivated them. But the result is full
of fun and whimsy, as people from across the country
responded to their call to craft an “art bra,” sending
in their creations along with the stories behind them.
You will smile at the bras that have been turned
into works of art, with names like “Got Milk,”
“Lucky Charms,” “Go, Girls, Go,” and “Cradles of
Civilizations.” The book showcases over fifty bras,
with accompanying personal stories that celebrate
the curative power of laughter. Even hockey greats
Bobby Orr and Sidney Crosby have gotten into the
act by signing “sports bras.”
about the author
the “bra-artistas” are an eclectic group inspired
by the whimsy of the project and stirred by the cause
of women’s breast health. They started with two brave
women who wore two specially crafted art-bras at an
International Women’s Retreat in Northern Canada, to
the joy of the more than 100 women in the audience.
After this event, witty Art-bras began to pour into the
West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation from
across the country, and eventually around the world.
The bras come from a community of breast cancer
sufferers and survivors, health care workers, friends,
and family. These bra “artists” will inspire you and
move you to tears – both of laughter and sadness.
Their creations and the stories behind them, bring
a sense of lightness and hope to an all-too serious
problem.
A portion of the proceeds from every sale will
benefit breast cancer research.
Special events to coincide with the
book’s Mother’s Day publication
The original project raised over $700,000
for a new mammogram machine
Writing the Revolution
by Michele Landsberg
The Feminist History Project’s Collected Columns of Michele Landsberg
One of the most respected voices in Canadian
feminism, two-time National Newspaper Awardwinning
journalist Michele Landsberg has engaged
with the women’s movement more than any other
writer in the country. Her opinions, always careful
and sometimes controversial, have mattered to
women’s lives.
For 25 years, between 1978 to 2005, Michele wrote
a highly influential column in The Toronto Star,
recording and interpreting history from the front
lines of the feminist movement. In this volume,
Michele brings us a collection of her favorite columns.
With her trademark blend of kindness, toughness,
bluntness and humor, she reflects on when she was
right, when she was wrong, what was happening
behind the scenes, and what has happened since.
about the author
Michele Landsberg began her career with The
Globe and Mail in the 1960s. She joined Chatelaine
Magazine in the 1970s, under the editorship of leading
feminist Doris Anderson. She is the author of three
best-selling books: Women and Children First, Michele
Landsberg’s Guide to Children’s Books and “This is New
York, Honey!”. She continues her work as an activist,
and is a regular reviewer of children’s literature on CBC
Radio. Michele lives in Toronto with her husband,
Stephen Lewis, and their family.
The Feminist History Society is a project of
the Women’s Education and Research Foundation of
Ontario Incorporated.
“Ms. Landsberg’s forum provided a much-needed voice
for those among us who could not speak up nor out …
on issues of gender and equality. We counted on her
to speak for us, to lobby politicians and various grand
poobahs of big biz alike; and, to her everlasting credit,
Ms. Landsberg never disappointed us.”
—Judith Fitzgerald for The Globe and Mail
generation of women – and men.”
To Hope and Back The Journey of the St. Louis
by Kathy Kacer
A ship carrying Jewish passengers can find no safe harbor
about the author
Kathy Kacer has now written seven books in the
Holocaust Remembrance Series for Young Readers,
including The Diary of Laura’s Twin and Hiding Edith.
Restitution: a family’s fight for their heritage lost in the
Holocaust was her first book for adults. She has spoken
to young people all over the world about the Holocaust.
A former psychologist, she also talks to adults about
how to teach sensitive material to young children.
Kathy lives in Toronto with her family.
Lisa and Sol board the luxury ocean liner St. Louis
in Hamburg, Germany on May 13, 1939. Lisa and
her family are in first class; Sol and his parents are
below in tourist class. Both children have mixed
feelings – they’re excited to be beginning this
voyage to a better life, but sad to be leaving their
old lives behind. They are Jewish, as are almost all
of the 937 passengers on board, and although war
has not been officially declared in Europe, the Nazis
have been persecuting Jews for years. As the ship
sets sail for Cuba, the atmosphere is optimistic. The
passengers feel fortunate to have been able to buy
landing permits, and their German captain, Gustave
Shroeder, is determined to get them to safety. The
captain’s voice alternates with Sol and Lisa’s, revealing
the details they didn’t know. As Hitler’s propaganda
machine turns Cuba against them, the mood on
board changes to despair. The St. Louis and its Jewish
passengers are turned away – first from Cuba, then
the United States, and then Canada.
“A tragic story about an historical event that deserves to
be told, and which should provoke thoughtful discussion
about a difficult subject.”
Shannen and the Dream for a School
by Janet Wilson
All children have the right to learn in a safe and positive environment
themes: children’s rights, activism, native rights
about the author
Janet Wilson has met with friends of Shannen
Koostachin and was inspired to write her story. Janet
is the author and illustrator of the picture books One
Peace: True Stories of Young Activists and Our Earth:
How Kids are Saving the Planet. She lives in Eden Mills,
Ontario, a community with a strong civic focus.
This is the true story of Shannen Koostachin and
the people of Attawapiskat, a Cree community in
Northern Ontario, who have been fighting for a new
school since 1979, when a fuel spill contaminated
their original school building.
It is 2008, and thirteen-year-old Shannen and the
other students at J.R. Nakogee Elementary are tired
of attending class in portables that smell and don’t
keep out the freezing cold winter air. They make a
YouTube video describing the poor conditions, and
their plea for a decent school gains them attention
and support from community leaders and children
across the country. Inspired, the students decide to
turn their grade-eight class trip into a visit to Ottawa,
to speak to the Canadian government. Once there,
Shannen speaks passionately to the politicians about
the need to give Native children the opportunity
to succeed. The following summer, Shannen is
nominated for the International Children’s Peace
Prize. Her passion, and that of the other students,
makes politicians stand up and take notice, and
becomes a rallying point for the community and for
the country.
Shannen will never see her dream fulfilled. Tragically,
she was killed in a car crash in 2010. Her family,
friends, and supporters are continuing to fight and
to honor her memory as they work for equality for
children in communities everywhere.
Emily Included
by Kathleen McDonnell
Emily, born with cerebral palsy, fights for her right to go to school with her peers
Based on a true story
Emily Eaton was born with severe cerebral palsy.
Denied access to classes at her local school, she
and her parents challenged the local board of
education in their Ontario community for her right
to be educated with non-disabled children in a
regular classroom. Her case went all the way to the
Supreme Court of Canada in the late nineties and
is considered a breakthrough for inclusive education
for both physically and mentally challenged people.
Emily went on to graduate from high school proving
the skeptics wrong.
Emily’s fight to be treated like a “normal,” everyday
kid in a regular classroom, at a time when children
with CP were segregated, was groundbreaking. Her
story makes her an amazing role model for children
everywhere – whether they are living with a disability
or not.
themes: disability, inclusivity, social activism
Dear Baobab
written by Cheryl Foggo & illustrated by Qin Leng
Maiko knows what it is like to be small and to feel planted in the wrong place
themes: immigration, homesickness, belonging
about the author
Cheryl Foggo is a journalist, screenwriter, poet, and
playwright. She has a particular interest in the history of
Black pioneers on the prairies and has written extensively
on that subject. Her young adult novels, One Thing That’s
True and I Have Been in Danger were finalists for the
Governor General’s Award and the Silver Birch Award
respectively. She lives in Calgary.
about the illustrator
Qin Leng was born in Shanghai, China and lived in
France before moving to Montreal. She always loved to
illustrate the innocence of children and has developed a
passion for children’s books. She now works as a designer
and illustrator in Toronto.
Maiko has left his village in Africa far behind,
moving to Canada to live with his aunt and uncle.
When he thinks of home, he thinks of the beautiful
big baobab tree at the center of the village. In his
new home, Maiko feels a connection to the small
spruce tree in the front yard – it’s seven years old,
the same age as he is. The tree sings to Maiko and
shares his secrets. When he learns that the roots of
the tree are growing too close to the house, putting
the little spruce in danger of being cut down, Maiko
tries to save it. He knows all too well what it’s like to
be small, and planted in the wrong place.
While Maiko tries to keep his sadness to himself,
his aunt and uncle quickly realize that something is
wrong. Together, they work out a solution that saves
the tree, seeing it transported to a new forest. Just
like Maiko, his tree will learn to grow and thrive in
its new home.
“A charming read that, without being too syrupy-sweet,
offers encouragement to anyone who has ever felt they
are in the wrong place. ... The conversations between
Maiko and the tree are particularly superb.”
—Quill & Quire
“Maiko experiences an orphan’s loneliness and an
immigrant’s unease but eventually finds comfort in his
new home.” —Kirkus
and timeless. In 2009, she received the Elizabeth Mrazik
Cleaver Illustrator Prize from Ibby Canada for her
illustrations for The Key. She lives in Montreal with her
family.
Marwa and Ahmad know that war has come to their
country, but its effects are small and life in their
village goes on as normal. Ahmad is the goal-keeper
in their games of soccer – the best they’ve ever had.
One day, a group of planes fly over their village,
like angry wasps. The skies go gray, and the birds
go quiet. They learn that the planes dropped small
unexploded bombs all over the countryside, now
hidden and lying in wait.
But life goes on, and the children once again forget
about war. Until a day when Marwa and Ahmad are
playing, and Ahmad picks up a small yellow bottle
he finds hidden in the grass. The resulting explosion
will change their lives forever – leaving Marwa
scarred, and Ahmad with only one hand and one leg.
The scars of war will take a long time to heal – both
those visible and those inside. But with time and
courage, hope returns for both Marwa and Ahmad –
who can no longer play soccer, but who has become
the best coach they’ve ever had.
“Delezenne’s blend of collage, drawings and
texture juxtapose the images of war from a child’s
perspective. They encapsulate the journey a child of
war is forced to take. Though it begins with complete
blackness, it can end with a winged soccer ball.”
