IN HONOUR OF THE<br />

LONGEST SERVING<br />

GOVERNOR<br />

The Victor E. Bruce Financial Complex<br />

is a fine structure situated in <strong>Tobago</strong>. At a<br />

special ceremony held on June 18, 2012,<br />

the building was named in honour <strong>of</strong> the<br />

first local Governor <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Trinidad</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong> - Victor Edward Bruce.<br />

<strong>Vintage</strong> stumbled on this building while on<br />

assignment in <strong>Tobago</strong>, <strong>and</strong> captured its image<br />

for the benefit <strong>of</strong> our readers. This complex<br />

is a fitting memorial to Governor Bruce who<br />

was first <strong>and</strong> foremost a <strong>Tobago</strong>nian.<br />

<strong>Vintage</strong> remembers Governor Bruce mainly<br />

for his comm<strong>and</strong>ing physical presence.<br />

There were times when ordinary staff would<br />

enjoy a chuckle on seeing a cool slowwalking<br />

manager suddenly break into a jog<br />

when summoned by Governor Bruce. Yes,<br />

he dem<strong>and</strong>ed high st<strong>and</strong>ards. He insisted<br />

that even outside <strong>of</strong> working hours, <strong>Central</strong><br />

<strong>Bank</strong> employees were expected to maintain<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>of</strong> decorum <strong>and</strong> to engage in a<br />

code <strong>of</strong> conduct befitting a ‘<strong>Central</strong> <strong>Bank</strong>er’.<br />

Having served for a period <strong>of</strong> fifteen years,<br />

Victor Bruce remains the longest serving<br />

Governor <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Trinidad</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Tobago</strong>. The Victor E. Bruce Financial<br />

complex preserves the memory <strong>of</strong> a highachieving<br />

son <strong>of</strong> the soil <strong>and</strong> hopefully<br />

will encourage upcoming <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Bank</strong>ers<br />

to strive for the highest st<strong>and</strong>ards in<br />

performance, public service <strong>and</strong> integrity.<br />

<strong>Vintage</strong> thinks its cool to have a building<br />

named after you. Yep!<br />
