LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Dear Mark,
On behalf of Rover-Landers BC and the 19th
Annual Northwest Challenge Organizing
Committee and entrants, I acknowledge the
continued support from Rovers North of this
unique event. Thank you for every donation of
gift certificates for each vehicle entry.
The Northwest Challenge was a great
success with entrants from British Columbia,
Alberta, Washington and Oregon, and all of
them were challenged in ways that only a
Land Rover owner could truly appreciate.
These events and hosting organizations
are only as successful as the support that is
received. Thank you for your very generous
support.
work that clubs do to keep Land Rover
marque values alive and well.
Congratulations on a great event -ed]
Dear Rovers North,
I drive a Defender 90 daily, and as we all
know they go through parts and I can usually
find everything I need at Rovers North.
Thanks again and keep up the inventory and
knowledgeable people on staff. You’re doing
a great job!
[I am envious that you get to drive a
Defender 90 every day. What a great way to
make the most mundane trips a Land
Rover adventure –ed]
Hey folks,
We appreciate the great service we have
received from Rovers North in the purchases
we have made. You are speedy when we are
needy! Living in a non-Rover dealer town,
your service has been helpful and as our
Rover begins its inevitable mechanical
decline, Rovers North will be a lifesaver.
[You join thousands of Land Rover owners
who live hundreds of miles away from the
nearest Land Rover dealer. For classic Land
Rover, Range Rover and Discovery enthusiasts,
Rovers North is a valuable lifeline to
get the most out of their Rover –ed]
Dear Sir,
Last summer, while on a “plains game” safari
in Namibia, fully anticipating to be ferried
about in either a Defender 110 or 130, I was
somewhat disappointed when the vehicle of
choice turned out to be a diesel-powered
Toyota Pickup. I inquired of my two professional
hunters, brothers Jaco and Mare Van
de Merve, as to why they were using Toyotas
rather than Land Rovers to transport their
hunting clients. Their response was that they
could purchase two Toyotas for the price of
one Defender. Later, while spending the night
in Windhoek, I sighted a pristine Defender
130 Crew Cab, with a camper top, parked in
a hotel parking lot, muttering to myself as to
why this vehicle hasn’t found its way to US
shores.
Hans Salzinger
Arlington, VA
[The strong pound sterling might be great
for national pride and central bankers, but
it’s not much for export industries. Land
Rover products cost more than Toyotas,
Nissans, or Suzukis and that’s a real challenge
for Land Rover. Remember that in the
world of automobile manufacturing, Land
Rover does not produce many cars. So
there’s little economy of scale. As for a US
Defender, think about our interior safety
and emission regulations –ed.]
To the staff of Rovers North
Everyone at the Florida Land Rover Club
would like to extend a huge FLRC thank you
for sponsoring our Fall 2007 Rally. The Rally
was a huge success. We had approximately 65
trucks and over 120 people in attendance.
From the trail to the meeting hall, our club
members share stories of great success with
Rovers North and all of your staff.
We appreciate your continuous generosity.
Without folks like you, we would not have
the raffle and the raffle is a big part of our rallies.
Thanks again for providing us with very
high-end products. The proceeds gained
from the sale of raffle tickets ensure the financial
stability of the club. On behalf of every
FLRC member, thank you for your generosity.
Behind Sliding Doors:
A Look at What’s New at Rovers North
What do you do with an old barn? That’s a good question. What
about an old barn that was Rovers North’s sole building when it all
began? Let’s take a step through the door from the adjacent sales
department into the attached barn where old world meets modern
day. The barn has character, including an old wooden sliding door
that we still employ today. It’s a bit cantankerous to manage, unless
you’ve got some Herculean strength in your arms and torso. When
the door slams shut, because there’s no way to close it gingerly, not
By Mike Koch
run similar diameter gray plastic pipes, containing the cables for the
high-speed computer network, which run to the computer that
processes receiving and returns. Cobwebs sway lazily from rafters, in
a surge of air from the old heater that hangs from the ceiling. Like
the barn, it’s old but it earns its keep heating the workspace.
A welcome luxury at the time of installation, considering the barn was
unheated during the first few years it was in service. Keep in mind
this is northern Vermont, where temperatures can stay well below
Rovers North Fall of 1979
only do you hear it, you feel it…from inside the sales department.
I’m convinced the contents of the bookshelf on the abutting wall will
one day come cascading down on some poor salesman’s head while
he’s taking a customer’s order. With its poured concrete floor, which
has “7-10-81” finger-drawn in the once wet cement, the barn once
played the role of the Rovers North’s shop. Long before Land Rovers
had advanced electronic engine management systems. This was
during the era of points and condensers, simpler times. If those
faintly oil-stained floors and post and beam frame could only speak,
I’d bet they’d have verses to share on all sorts of projects. Today, steel
lines for the former shop’s compressed air still course the walls, even
though they haven’t been used in over a decade. On an adjacent wall
zero for days, if not weeks, during a cold spell in the winter. Looking
through the windows, distant picturesque mountains create the
horizon, past the small family-run farms that run up and down
Route 128.
Ages ago, it housed a helical staircase, which was the only means
of getting to the second floor. The majority of the parts for our
mail order customers and our shop were stored there. Bulky parts,
like exhaust systems were scary to handle on the narrow and
precariously steep staircase. One wrong move and you’d go tumbling
down, with whatever you were carrying, like Humpty Dumpty. Today,
we climb a much wider and reassuring set of stairs to the second
floor, where it’s remains unheated. There’s pink fiberglass insulation
8
visible in the ceiling and daylight shining up from the gaps in between
the floorboards. These days, the second floor is used as storage for
everything from old invoices, wing skins, windscreens, and an array
of slightly used vintage parts. A yellowed box of invoices partially
blocks an old poster, advertising Fairey Overdrives, which looks like
it’s been hanging there since Series trucks were rolling off the
assembly lines in Solihull.
While the barn is nothing fancy to look at, which is just the way
we like it; a lot goes on behind that quarrelsome sliding door. For
years, the shipping and receiving departments were combined in one
warehouse, which replaced the barn’s cramped storage duties. While
this layout worked for years, our business has since grown, along
with the volumes of both shipping and receiving.
The increased volume and variety of parts entering the receiving
department, shared with the shipping department, jeopardized
sequence. While we tried to avoid this, space limitations used to
constrict what we consider an acceptable time frame for a return.
Furthermore, the move enabled us to set questionable parts aside for
a more thorough investigation. Now, they can be separately sorted
and/or stored until the following can be determined: return the part
to stock, label it for sale as a clearance item, or send it back to Land
Rover as a genuinely defective part. In addition, the new location of
our receiving area is adjacent to the sales department, easing
communication with sales in the case of a questionable return.
While relocating the receiving department, we’ve also
reallocated where some of our larger items, such as Hi-Lift jacks and
our full line of exhaust systems, to increase efficiency for the pick and
pack team. By inventorying some of our larger items closer to the
receiving department, the warehouse team no longer has to take time
managing bulky items from one side of the warehouse to the other,
Rovers North Winter of 2007
efficiency for the following reasons: incoming parts could
inadvertently get mixed up with existing inventory and be mislabeled
and/or misplaced. Furthermore, by moving the receiving department
to another location within Rovers North, we can organize and optimally
utilize existing space while offering ourselves more room to
expand when the time comes.
How does this move help us provide better customer service?
Seeing as the cycle of processing a returned part begins in the
receiving department, moving the receiving department to a more
spacious location helps efficiency. With an increase in space, Rovers
North can methodically process returns in terms of “first in, first out”,
rather than having returns congest the shelves and fall out of
and back again when it comes time to ship a part.
The receiving department has been relocated for a number
of weeks now, and the improvements in efficiency are quite
noticeable. As for the old barn, it’s still in use, playing a vital role at
Rovers North!
Annual
All-Metal
Dash
Rover
Meet
Story & Photos by: Don Flye
PETERSHAM, MA, September 22-23 - The weather was ideal
for the 4th Annual ALL-Metal Dash Rover Meet weekend in
Petersham. Many showed up Friday afternoon from as far away
as Michigan.
A large number vendors did well with their used parts,
too. George Maattala brought in a 109” with a six-cylinder
Chevrolet engine for sale plus a truckload of parts. Garrett
Bourgue came in with a 109” lengthened to 140” (wheelbase)
with a Ford drivetrain, loaded with Land Rover parts.
On Saturday morning, the first tech session was by Les
Parker of Rovers North on the electrical system of the Series
Land Rovers, followed by Alan Richer on overhauling the
windshield wiper motor units. These units are loaded with
small springs, washers and other small parts that have to go
in exactly to the right place with special grease that cost
$150.00 a tube.
The third session was by Tom Bache on solid button head
aluminum rivets. These were hammered in with an air gun
tooled with special mandrel, which conforms to the rivet head.
Late in the afternoon, an adventurous Mike Flye led a
group of Rovers green laning (off-roading). His first attempt
had a gate across at the far end. This could have been easily
bypassed, except Garrett’s 140” was not designed for sharp
maneuvers. Upon returning to the start, another route was
selected. This, once again, was very good for some distance
until they approached a very low place that the beavers had
flooded. Due to the Land Rovers not being equipped
with snorkels or drivers’ courage, they again returned to
the highway.
Mike, still determined to green lane to a restaurant, led a
third attempt. This one got them through, but after dark.
The remainder of the evening was spent back at the site around
a campfire.
On Sunday there was a short breakfast run, then back for
more socializing and trading of parts.
So You Want To Buy a Defender
So you want to buy a Defender? Join the club – it’s a rare Land Rover
enthusiast who does not covet one of the NAS Land Rovers.
You don’t have a lot of choice. Officially, only two models made
it into the North American market. The Defender 110 made a huge
splash in 1993 when the uniquely numbered and specially-kitted-out
examples were imported into the US and Canada. With their “safari”
cages and stark white paint, they were instantly identifiable and
helped reestablish the Land Rover image for new enthusiasts. The
Defender 90 that followed between 1994 –1997, whether in unique
soft top or station wagon mode, became the off-roader’s car of
choice.
Regardless of the engine [3.9 or 4.0 liters] or transmission
[LT77 or R380, or ZF automatic] choice, the brilliant drivetrain and
suspension design assured you of extraordinary off road capability
and safe interstate driving. Whether you score a Defender 110, of
which only 500 were officially imported in 1993, or the Defender 90,
of which about 7,000 came into the North American market, you had
a car that absolutely, positively everyone knows is a Land Rover.
By Jeffrey Aronson
What should you look for in searching out a Defender?
Mark Letorney of Rovers North says that “corrosion is the
greatest problem. Look at the rear frame member of the chassis. Just
like in a Series Rover, if it’s rusty, you can suspect rust elsewhere
on the frame. The second place is the doors, where Rover used
dissimilar metals. Pull up the carpets and look at floors – you might
find corrosion there, too.”
“Once you’ve looked over the car, take it for a test drive. The
great thing about the Defender is that it hides nothing. You’ll hear
everything that’s going on as you drive it. When you shift, you’ll
hear and feel if the transmission is working correctly, the clutch is
operating properly and the suspension components need work. If you
hear whining or clunking, crawl underneath to shake the propshaft
or the suspension bushings. Check the fluid levels, too. They’ll tell you
whether the car has been properly maintained.”
“The V-8 might have high mileage on it so you’ll want to do a
compression test and cylinder leak down test. Also, check whether
the engine has been overhauled or replaced. Make certain the
job was done right and that the engine was properly maintained.
The cooling system works hard on Defenders; check the radiator for
fresh antifreeze and little corrosion on the cooling fins.”
“Lastly, beware of a car that’s been over-accessorized. Make
certain that all components work with the suspension geometry of the
car. You don’t want an off-road giant that becomes unsafe on the
highway. For example, if you see a car with a lift kit, check the sway
bars. If they’ve been removed, what would the car be like on the open
road in daily use?”
Mike Smith of East Coast Rover, Rockland, ME, has maintained,
refurbished and restored many Defenders. First off, he notes that
“Defenders are Series III’s on steroids. The love of a Defender
is a love of things antique. You need to love to maintain. It requires
antique car-type maintenance. He says that evidence of
knowledgeable maintenance and the right parts are critical to
determining the likely condition of a Defender.”
“For example, the fuel injection relays are located in a seat
locker where over time, they’ll get corroded and/or fail. If you know
to look for this, you’ll save yourself unnecessary replacement of fuel
pumps and injectors. But you need to get the right replacement, the
Genuine Land Rover Parts 5-pin relay. Using the generic 4-pin
one means that the oxygen sensors will not send out the correct
information to a diagnostic system. So your car might start fine
but then stall out when it warms up. The missing pin is making all the
difference.”
“Oil changes are important for several reasons. Most
importantly the Rover V-8 is inherently an older design that counted
on 3,000 mile changes for long life. If you’re used to oil and filter
changes at 10,000 or 25,000 miles, don’t assume that you can wait
that long on your Defender, too.”
“There’s an old saw about Land Rovers that if they don’t leak,
they’re out of something. But you shouldn’t see copious leaks from
transfer case seals or driveshaft pinion seals – that’s a sign of neglect.
Off roading tends to push dirt into the seals and that causes the leaks.
The conscientious owner will replace damaged seals so they stop grit
and water from entering, not wait for them to leak out. “
“You won’t believe how much bad wiring we have to undo, so be
careful of cars with lots of accessories and demand evidence that they
were installed to professional standards. Look at the core of
Defender, not the brightwork or off-road equipment. Unfortunately,
the small number of Defenders sold in the US means that the dealer
network doesn’t always have that knowledge base on staff.”
Above all else, remember that all Land Rovers love maintenance.
Mike Smith notes he just purchased a Discovery Series II with
260,000 miles. It has a service stamp for every service interval.
Except where a dog chewed the seat and the failure of a subwoofer,
everything works on the Rover. That’s a cautionary tale for the
Defender buyer. Check that maintenance work shows evidence of
knowledge, high standards of repair and/or installation, and Genuine
Parts or tested accessories. Then you’ll have a Defender for the ages.
(B) Bilstein Shocks
Bilstein® is the world leader in gas-pressurized shock absorber technology.
Technically the most advanced shock available today, Bilstein utilizes a one piece
seamless monotube design filled with oil and nitrogen gas in a pressurized, sealed
compartment. Completely eliminates any foaming of the oil and the monotube design
helps dissipate heat to prevent shock fade. Bilstein’s shock bodies are
precision-formed through a unique seamless manufacturing process. We
recommend for use with Land Rover Genuine Standard or Heavy Duty springs. Great
for off-road driving in normally equipped vehicles. Not recommended for heavily
ladened vehicles with oversize tires. Lifetime warranty.
Simply Irresistible
Story by Mike Koch
Photos by Matt Martin
I’ve done something that I never thought I’d do. I recently purchased
an Alpine White 1993 Range Rover Classic short wheelbase. How
exciting, until you hear what I paid for it. It’s an $1,100 Range Rover
Classic. “I thought those were expensive, Mike.” A 175,000-mile
Range Rover Classic. “That’s no spring chicken, Mike.” A Range
Rover Classic that’s spent it’s entire tour of duty in the northern
reaches of Vermont. “Good from far, but far from good, Mike.” With
its leather seats and walnut dash, it still presents proudly enough
to take a date out to a respectable restaurant. For years, I’ve
been interested in Series Rovers; vehicles that are somewhat
straightforward to repair with simple hand tools, don’t have to be
plugged in to a computer to be diagnosed, don’t depreciate faster
than a concert Steinway falling from a skyscraper.
Speaking of which, Range Rover Classics are certainly attainable
these days, but you should scrutinize over each example you look at
because a so-called value may end up costing you down the road. Are
Range Rover Classics a better value now than ever? In 1993, mine
had an MSRP of about $44,500 when it rolled off its showroom floor
(literally, it was the display model). At the time of registration, the
local Department of Motor
Vehicles taxed me based on
its book value, roughly
$3,500. (remember to
watch out for the falling
pianos...) How on earth
did these cars depreciate
so much?
Let’s take a look at
what it takes to keep one
of these discreet status
indicators on the road and
in service. According to my
rudimentary calculations,
after commuting in it
everyday for about a month, it gets a magnificent 12.5 mpg. A Range
Rover Classic will never be mistaken for a Prius. Thankful, for the
planet we live on, I’ve been militant about my recycling chores lately.
The Range Rover’s so-called fuel economy is a “value” in a distorted
way. I like to think about it like this: it has twice the number of
cylinders than my Series and multitudes more horsepower and speed.
The Range Rover cruises effortlessly at 70 mph, whereas my 109”
once saw a record speed of 62 mph on a steep downhill, a
frightening experience altogether. The Range Rover is all-wheel-drive
all the time, whereas the Series is in rear-wheel-drive during most of
its travels. What are some of the more expensive parts to replace? An
ABS pump retails at about $1,200. What about the ABS valve block,
which retails at around $1,500? (I hope that doesn’t decide to stop
functioning, especially since this Classic weighs in at 4,401 lbs.!) The
viscous unit in the Borg Warner transfer case retails at about $1,600,
not counting labour and other items that should probably be replaced
at the same time - like the chain, gears and seals. At which point, it
typically pays to replace the entire transfer box instead of fixing what’s
broken. Corrosion is a constant battle in New England, especially
when owning a Range Rover Classic. Perhaps 1993 is the best model
year for the short wheelbase, as it has the benefits of ABS and ETC
without the troublesome aging EAS. I’m trying to come up with a
figure on a repair that would potentially send this car to an early
grave. When will we reach the point of diminishing returns? How
much do I love this Classic?
Immeasurably. So, what’s it all about? What does this Range
Rover bring to my life other than high fuel consumption and the
dreaded question of “what if?” It’s like no other car I’ve driven or
owned-and I’ve owned quite an embarrassingly high number for a
man of my age. What I like the most about driving it is the way it
makes me feel while driving it. When I drive my Range Rover, I feel
like entitled royalty. It has that certain “je na sais quoi” of making its
driver feel superior to other motorists surrounding him or her. While
speaking to some fellow Classic enthusiasts the other night, we all
agreed, that until you drive one on a regular basis, you really can’t
grasp the aura this car beholds. I’ve heard the following: “All Range
Rovers are cars, but not all cars are Range Rovers.” Narcissistically, I
admire my reflection while driving my Range Rover past those shiny
glass-faced contemporary
office buildings in town.
“Make way for the king of
‘Vermontistan’ in his 1993
Range Rover Classic!”
Enough about my
overly-inflated ego while
driving the Range Rover; it’s
also great for loading up
with friends and heading
out to dinner in style.
This late Range Rover
Classic just might be my
favorite Land Rover.
From its formidable
driving height, I feel like I’m towering over all the other motorists on
an imperial level. Like riding in a palanquin on the back of a
pachyderm, I feel safe. All nonsequitors aside, the Classic’s timeless
design looks “just right;” think of it as Goldylocks. The other night,
I parked it in front of my Burlington condo and stood admiring it for
almost five minutes. My neighbors must consider me mad. The
Classic looks smart, and its exterior styling remained largely
unchanged from its debut in 1970 till the end of its production in
1995! There’s no mistaking my Range Rover for any other SUV
resembling a melted cough drop, in any parking lot.
It is chock-full-of-amenities. I routinely appreciate it’s factory
fitted 120-watt a/d/s stereo with 6-disc CD changer (and
weatherband), walnut dash, heated windscreen, glass sunroof,
puddle lamps in the bottoms of the doors, ABS, ETC, power windows
(the three that work), power locks, and leather heated power seats
(more on that later). One of my favorite luxuries is the auto-dimming
rearview mirror; it perfectly cuts the glare from those bothersome
HID headlamps. Its uprated suspension was genuinely put to the test
the other morning as I swerved to avoid a motorist even less awake
31
than myself! The purposeful burble, at idle, emanating from its NRP
performance exhaust is wondrous, making the engine sound larger
than its 3.9 liters. I love this Rover!
By now, you’re certainly asking yourself “what’s wrong with it?”
Or, “He got suckered.” No, I’m afraid not. So what if three of the four
doors and power windows are operational? While the rear
crossmember is a bit flaky, the car was repainted about two years
ago and it’s had Genuine waterproof seat covers since its first owner
took delivery. Seeing as I’m probably going to be the last owner
of this machine, now is the perfect time to enjoy the leather fit for
royalty. As soon as I drove it home for the first time, off came the
covers and I promptly cleaned and conditioned the well-preserved
hides. While the transfer case prefers not to go into LO range, this
Classic’s been painstakingly maintained (e.g.: Amsoil synthetics all
around since day one) since new and has had a lot of recent work:
heater core (quite a job, as half the dash must be removed), new
brakes lines and calipers all around, new Genuine HD springs and
Bilsteins, full NRP stainless steel performance exhaust system, K&N
air filter, Hella Vision Plus headlamps, tune ups, fuel pump, liftgate,
etc. All the stuff that makes owners sell these cars, usually at a
substantial loss. Heated power seats? Sure, it’s got them, but they
don’t work as the factory intended.
Speaking of dodgy electrics, while I was in New York for the
Thanksgiving holiday, I lent the keys to a friend visiting the area from
out of town. I asked him how things went with my Range Rover,
expecting to be amused by a memorable story or two. It went
something like this: “Well, funny you should ask because the
other night I was driving a bit faster than the posted limit on some
unfamiliar country road and suddenly, while cresting a hill, the
brights decided to extinguish themselves. Once I “turned off” the
brights using the stalk on the steering column, the headlamps worked
again. So, I guess you don’t have brights anymore, but the rest of the
car works perfectly and I even left some petrol in it for you. Thanks
for letting me drive it, and I know what you mean about that royal
seating position and that luxurious, unhurried feeling while you’re
behind the wheel.” Note: The brights are back in service, after
replacing a 15 amp fuse.
On a slightly darker note, the other day, my Range Rover
stranded me mid-commute. It genuinely got stuck and I don’t mean
off-road. Was this the end for my freshly acquired Range Rover? Our
courtship was surely too young for that! To make a long story short
the parking brake got stuck ON, immobilizing me as I tried to pull out
of a parking spot. A bit possessed on the part of my Range Rover,
considering the parking brake wasn’t applied when I parked it! The
shoes got jammed up against the inside of the drum and fell on the
floor upon removal of the drum. I’ll spare you the details of this
repair, but you can imagine I employed a rather cost-effective
approach.
32
Ever since I took delivery, the rear
differential leaked. It leaked horrendously,
reminiscent of a colander, thanks to all those
quaint Vermont winters. Objectively, I filled it
every other day. I kept using Amsoil synthetic
gear oil, knowing that if it were to empty, at least
its bearing and gears would be coated in lush
synthetic lubrication. I took it to a local Land
Rover specialist who drained the differential,
cleaned it, coated it in thick marine-grade
epoxy, and covered the epoxy in black paint,
after allowing it to harden at room temperature
for a few days; the perfect fix for my $1,100
Range Rover.
Why not properly weld the axle case shut
from the inside, and outside, whilst removing
the rear differential? The labour bill for that job
alone might cost more than what I paid for the
entire Range Rover! That’s what makes these
cars a great value. So long as you have
an affordable source for quality parts, and
you’re resourceful with your hands, these
vehicles are a considerable value! Aside from
its thirsty fuel habit and depreciation, this
Rover is loaded to the gills with comfort and
refinement, not to mention character that you
just cannot put a price on. Is this Range Rover
restorable? Surely, but it’s also replaceable! If
something goes horribly wrong or it rots out
beyond recognition, I’ll part it out and gladly
buy a replacement. These cars aren’t nearly as
restorable as a Series or Defender, seeing as
they have more complex systems and some of
the interior and exterior bits are no longer in
production. In the meantime, mine will have a
nice retirement, driving me to and from Rovers
North. As for yourselves, go out and buy a
Range Rover Classic. Once you take it home,
acquaint yourself with all of its systems and stay
on top of the maintenance. This isn’t a vehicle
that only requires its owner to perform
oil changes and a full tank of fuel. If you
are balking at the fuel consumption bill, this
probably isn’t the right car for you. Find a
well-sorted example, or you’ll only condemn my
recommendation.
As for me, owning this Range Rover Classic
is quite an upgrade in luxury from my 109”
military. I can’t say that for a daily driver I’ll
be back in my Series anytime soon.
Let the Sisyphean task of Land Rover
ownership and maintenance continue…
LAND ROVER REVEALS 60th ANNIVERSARY DEFENDER
SPECIAL EDITION AT THE BRITISH RED CROSS BALL
Land Rover will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a new special
edition of the iconic Defender – the SVX.
The Land Rover Defender SVX was unveiled for the first time by
Zara Phillips at the British Red Cross Ball in London earlier this
evening. The world's first SVX has been donated by Land Rover UK to
the British Red Cross to auction at the ball.
"The Red Cross association with Land Rover goes back to 1954,
when Land Rover supplied a vehicle to the British Red Cross for use
in Dubai as a mobile dispensary," said James Johnstone, chairman for
the British Red Cross Ball. "We are thrilled that Land Rover continues
to support our vital humanitarian work today. Funds raised from
auctioning this vehicle will go towards the work of the Red Cross in
the UK and overseas, which this year has included the UK floods,
Darfur Crisis and ongoing HIV work in Africa."
While most of the 25,000 Defenders produced each year are
working tools for everyone from farmers and foresters to aid
agencies, the SVX is the most stylish and feature-packed version that
Land Rover has ever produced.
Special Edition Features:
With metallic black paintwork and subtle satin black graphic
decals, the Defender SVX will be available in both 90 soft-top and
90 station wagon versions. Distinctive exterior features have a
contrasting silver finish, such as the unique 'Defender' and 'SVX'
badges, tubular side-steps, and the bold surround for the front grille
and new, clear-lens headlamps. All vehicles will also feature new,
‘diamond turned’ five-spoke alloy wheels, a reinforced aluminium
front undershield and clear LED rear lights.
Photo Curtesty of
Land Rover
To bring the SVX interiors right up to date, they are equipped
with custom-designed Recaro front seats, distinctive alloy gear knobs,
a new audio system (with subwoofer and USB socket), iPod cradle
and Garmin satellite navigation. The soft-top models are especially
eye-catching, with a metallic silver tubular cage that supports a
tailor-made, removable black fabric hood. This encloses a flat
load-space and a spare wheel stowed behind the front seats,
reminiscent of the very first open-top Land Rovers. Each SVX model
for the UK will also come fitted with an individually numbered plaque,
i.e. 001.
"The Defender SVX looks very different to a spartan 1948 Land
Rover, but it's still an essentially practical vehicle that will enable you
to go almost anywhere," says Phil Popham, Land Rover's managing
director. "The new and much more refined diesel engine introduced
earlier this year has been a great success with customers, and for
those who want the ultimate Defender, we thought that the SVX
special edition would be an ideal way to mark Land Rover's 60th
birthday."
A total of 200 SVX vehicles will be made available in the UK- 140
two-seat Defender 90 soft-tops and 60 four-seat 90 station wagons.
Production of the Defender SVX will start in Spring 2008, with
deliveries to customers starting from early summer for soft-tops and
later in the summer for station wagons. Prices will be announced
later in the year.
LAND ROVER HITS THE SLOPES
Land Rover has become the Official Vehicle Supplier to this
year’s Metro Ski and Snowboard Show in the Grand Hall, Olympia
from 24 – 28 October.
Land Rover marketing director, Andy Griffiths explained: "This
will be the first time Land Rover has taken part in the show and we’re
really excited about it. Land Rover vehicles are perfectly suited to
wintry conditions and therefore where better to showcase their abilities."
Also making its debut at the show will be the Land Rover
Burton Rail Jam. This live action feature includes a real ski slope and
Europe’s top snowboarders showing off their skills over a rail fixed
over the roof of a Range Rover Sport. Spectators will be able to keep
warm in one of the slope's chalets, sipping a hot cup of Land Rover
Coffee. The Land Rover Fashion Show forms another major attraction
at the event, where cutting edge winter sportswear will be modelled
on the specially designed catwalk incorporating a Range Rover
Autobiography and Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE.
The Range Rover Autobiography offers the freedom to express
your own distinct taste through a wide choice of optional colours and
materials creating a vehicle that is as individual as its owner. The
Autobiography programme is available when you specify either the
Range Rover Supercharged or TDV8 diesel Vogue SE.
42
Visitors to the show may also be in with a chance to win the
ultimate wintery prize of an Icelandic Adventure together with a
chance each day to win an adrenalin-filled off-road day at a Land
Rover Experience Centre in the UK.
BRITAIN 'S MOST PRACTICAL 4x4 DISCOVERED
The Land Rover Discovery 3 has been named Britain's most practical
4x4 in a test conducted by Planet 4x4 Magazine.
In the first assessment of its kind, the Discovery 3 scored an
impressive 93 points out of a total 100 and beat off competition from
the Mercedes GL, Audi Q7, Nissan Pathfinder and Lexus RX.
"This is a great achievement for the Discovery, which has proved
time and time again it is three cars in one. It has now won nearly 100
awards since launch in 2004, making it one of the most decorated
SUVs ever," said John Edwards, Land Rover UK managing director.
Alan Kidd, editor of Planet 4x4 added: "This is probably the most
intense scrutiny a group of 4x4s has ever been put under. Our testers
crawled all over each of the 38 vehicles, examining every last detail of
what makes a car easy to live with.
"There are some incredibly clever packaging solutions out there
- but nothing to beat the Discovery 3. From its handy double glove
box to its brilliant seat-folding system, it sets the standard for load
carrying and does a proper job of taking seven fully grown adults. It's
a perfectly executed example of how a vehicle's interior should be,
and richly deserves the title of Britain's Most Practical 4x4."
The seven-seat Discovery 3 GS is available on the road from
£29,815 which includes a CO2 offset for the first 45,000 miles.
LAND ROVER OFF-ROAD TRAINING FOR NATIONAL
GRID ENGINEERS
Land Rover has won a contract to deliver a dedicated training
programme for National Grid Wireless, the leading provider of large
scale transmission infrastructure to broadcasters and mobile
telecommunications operators in the UK. The training course has
been developed to enable engineers who drive 4x4 vehicles to cope
with adverse conditions on and off road.
The National Grid Wireless announcement comes hard on the
heels of an order to supply 49 Discovery 3 vehicles to the Highways
Agency, the organisation responsible for maintaining and operating
England's motorways and major A roads. Land Rover will be
providing expert tuition for the Highways Agency.
Land Rover's UK Marketing Director, Andy Griffiths, said: "We
work with emergency services, police, and ambulance teams across
the country. With nearly 60 years of experience in overcoming the
elements and negotiating any terrain, we have a wealth of experience
to share with organisations such as National Grid Wireless.”
Peter Sanders, General Manager, Operational Services, at
National Grid Wireless, added: “This specifically tailored training
programme will ensure that the company’s field operations team has
the knowledge and ability to use 4x4 vehicles safely and effectively;
in all weather conditions and terrains.”
There are nine Land Rover Experiences throughout the UK, each
with its own unique off-road course featuring some of the most
challenging surfaces and terrain any driver could encounter. They
provide the perfect setting in which to develop confidence and skill
under expert tuition from highly trained instructors.
Land Rover supplies a quarter of the global aid agency market
and is involved in numerous important conservation programmes
worldwide, which are hugely beneficial to local communities.
Without the use of Land Rovers, some of their rescue missions
or emergency operations would be impossible.
Nearly two-thirds of the Land Rovers produced since 1948 are
still being driven, many in conditions where no other vehicle is capable
of being used.
LAND ROVER FREELANDER 2 VOTED SCOTTISH Photo SUVCurtesty OF THE of
Ford Media
YEAR 2007
The Land Rover Freelander 2 has won the title of Scottish SUV of the
Year at the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers' (ASMW) annual
awards ceremony in St Andrew's this evening.
The all-new Land Rover Freelander 2 received the majority vote
from the ASMW members in this category, fighting off competition
from the new Honda CR-V, the Nissan X-TRAIL, Subaru Tribeca,
Citroën C-Crosser, Peugeot 4007 and the Mitsubishi Outlander.
Presenting the award, ASMW President Stephen Park said:
"Numerous new SUVs have been launched during the past 12 months.
Some offer unrivalled off-road ability, others refined on-road
manners, some dwarf everything else on the road while others are
smaller than some family hatchbacks. But ultimately, one 4x4
impressed the judges more than all the rest. Winning by a bigger margin
than any other category winner, our choice looks good, feels good
and has real pedigree breeding."
Land Rover UK's managing director, John Edwards, said: "We are
absolutely delighted to win this award for Freelander 2 from the
Association of Scottish Motoring Writers. It is yet another testament
to its dynamic design, all round capability and its smart and spacious
interior package."
"Scotland is an important area for Land Rover's UK business,
with sales up 21 per cent so far this year. The geography of the region
means that an SUV is a practical choice for many customers."
The Freelander 2 is on-sale at Land Rover dealerships throughout
the UK, priced from £20,935, including the contribution to offset
carbon dioxide emissions. It has already sold over 15,000 units in the
UK this year.
The biggest selling model is still the TD4 manual with a combined
fuel economy figure of 37.7mpg and CO2 emissions of
194g/km.
Just days before this issue of The NEWS was to go to press the TATA
Group’s acquisition of Jaguar-Land Rover was officially announced.
At this time the details of the deal are still being ironed out, but both
parties have committed to the transaction and the negotiations are
likely to be concluded by time you read this. Of course this new
information makes the story we had intended to run in this spot,
entitled “Whose Your Daddy?” focusing on the uncertainty in the next
owner of Jaguar-Land Rover, a bit behind the times. Now that we know
who our daddy is, I am interested in finding out a little bit more about
him and discuss some of the possible ramifications for Jaguar-Land
Rover and the North American Market.
Tata Telco 1613 C
A remarkable example of Tata’s ability to produce vehicles
inexpensively can be seen in their new car designed especially for the
Indian market, which is scheduled to be unveiled shortly, that is said
to retail at only 100,000 rupees ($2,500)! Having an understanding
of Tata’s modus operandi raises some serious questions about their
intentions for Jaguar- Land Rover.
The first question in many analysts’ mind is: What will become of
the Land Rover production facilities in the UK? With an eye
for efficiency, Tata has incentive to completely shut down the UK
production ASAP and relocate production to India where they can
combine with current facilities and take advantage of cheap labor.
Originally a locomotive manufacturer, the Tata Group of India
was established in 1945. When India gained independence in 1947
it expended a great amount of resources in its rail system and
Tata flourished. Seeing automobiles as the future, Tata acquired
technology from Daimler-Benz AG and began manufacturing trucks.
Since then, Tata has diversified into steel, power, hotels and
information technologies. However, Tata is still best known for its
big, simplistic trucks (such as the ones pictured about) that are
popular throughout the Asian market.
Renowned for efficient and cost effective manufacturing Tata has
been very successful in keeping costs down to maximize profits.
Photo Curtesty of
Land Rover
This seems logical as other manufacturers are choosing India. GM is
spending $6 billion to build a plant and develop vehicles in India for
the vehicles in the Asian market.
Another prime reason to close the UK production facilities is that
Tata could then develop the valuable real estate on which the Solihull
facility is located. Surely this is within the scope of an organization as
diverse as the Tata Group. And so it seems likely that Tata will move
production to India, cuting up the Jaguar-Land Rover that we have
come to know and love.
GASP! What will happen to the quality of Land Rovers? After all
Indian production is not renowned for quality and Tata is certainly
44
not spared this criticism. How reliable can a $2,500 car be? Many
Americans pay that much for quality bicycles and we want Land
Rovers that will last. Will the American market support Land Rovers
made in India? Could this be the beginning of the end of Land Rover
as we have known? The sky is truly falling.
Hold on to your feathers Chicken Little, there is good reason to
believe the sky isn’t falling just yet: A very strong argument can be
made that Tata plans to change little with Jaguar-Land Rover, despite
the fact that everyone knows Jaguar could use some change as it has
been loosing money for decades.
One major reason not to promptly end production in the UK
is the employees. UK workers have very strong labor contracts and
relocating promptly would leave Tata paying significant severance
packages. It makes no sense for Tata to move to India to take
advantage of cheap labor while they are still paying the Brits they just
put out of work. Cost of labor is not the only reason to keep
production in the UK, moving Jaguar-Land Rover from the UK will
disrupt brand loyalty.
Tata knows that the value of Jaguar-Land Rover is based on
prestige, which would be significantly devalued by Asian production.
It makes little sense to purchase Jaguar-Land Rover and spend more
money on new production facilities in order to lower production
costs if the demand for those brands will be adversely affected. Tata
would be exposed to a lot less risk if they were to simply aquire
Jaguar-Land Rover and enjoy the profitability of Land Rover right
where it is. When discussing what Tata plans to do with Land Rover, it
is crucial to ask ‘Why did Tata purchased Jaguar-Land Rover?’ In
order to answer that it helps to look at the Indian economy and the
products Tata is currently making.
India is the world’s second fastest growing economy after China.
With a newly emerging middle class and a growing upper class the
demand for luxury vehicles is growing rapidly in India. While Tata has
been producing trucks for decades, its first venture into cars was only
ten years ago and $2500 car has been their only new design since.
Tata has yet to release the affordable luxury cars and SUVs that the
Indian market is ready for and it is because they don’t have the
technology.
Some analysts are seeing Tata’s acquisition of Jaguar-Land Rover
as a technology grab more than anything else. This is not a new role
Land Rover LRX concept
for Land Rover, as many claim BMW’s temporary ownership of Land
Rover allowed them to gain the technology necessary to produce the
BMW X5 SUV for less of an investment than developing it on their
own. If indeed the Jaguar-Land Rover purchase was primarily a
technology grab, then follows that Tata may not want to put much
energy into changing things before reselling.
So I have covered the worst-case scenario and the business as
usual possibility, but is it possible that TATA’s purchase could be a
good thing for us North American Land Rover aficionados? Consider
this: What if TATA kept producing the luxury vehicles in Solihul and
moved the Defender production to India?! If Range Rovers
production remained in England the rich would still buy them,
rappers would still “floss”‘ them lyrically (assuming they could still
put big shiny spinning rims on them), and the status quo would
remain. Indian production of the Defender could significantly lower
costs as Defenders are a very labor intensive product. Of course the
Indian manufactured Defender would also be prime for the US market
which is clamoring for Defenders. Recently a relatively stock, low
mileage NAS Defender 110 went for $80,000 at the Barrett-Jackson
Auto Auction. TATA must certainly recognize the demand for
Defenders in the USA. The question remains, do we really want an
Indian-made Defender? Just a few hundred words ago I was saying
the quality would be less than par. OF COURSE we want Indian made
Defenders! Lets face it, Defender production quality wasn’t that great
in England, lets give the Indians a try! For all we know the Indian
production could be better. I just want to know, can we get some
diesels too?
Of course it is impossible to do anything more than hazard a
guess at the future of Land Rover, so I am going to leave my official
opinion out. I hope this article has allowed you to make up your own
mind as to whether our beloved Land Rover is in for rocky times or
the second coming of the Defender. It is certainly worth noting the
irony of the situation: Jaguar and Land Rover, two brands that embody
the posh British colonizing spirit, are now owned by a former colony.
Who would have ever imagined the decisions of business men in India
affecting the livelihood of factory workers of the UK?! This sounds like
poetic justice to me.
A Swiss Army Knife at the
Mid Atlantic RallyBy Tami Sutherland
[Tami Sutherland, an internet software developer, just moved
from Clearwater, FL to Grottoes, VA, no doubt inspired by her
affection for her LR3 and the famous Mid-Atlantic Rally. Here’s
her account of the October 2007 event –ed.]
Now let’s see, what do I have here? My rain jacket, umbrella, a new
pair of Wellies, a month-and-a-half worth of clothes; hmmm, maybe
I should bring an extra umbrella, just in case.
This was my first trip to the Mid-Atlantic Rally, also known by its
acronym, the MAR. I’ve heard plenty about this event in years past,
everything from major carnage adventures on the Pearls Pond trails,
to odd tales of blow up animals and urinal cakes in the Philly Rovers
circus tent (probably best not to ask more about that). The recollections
vary from person to person, but one detail remains constant in
everyone’s MAR memories: it’s wet, cold, soaking, drenching, rainy,
muddy mayhem, and it’s a blast. Prepared for the traditional MAR
forecast, I could hardly wait to head up to Virginia and see how they
work it on the east side, rain or shine.
Hitting Interstate 75 to begin the 1,100-mile hike northward, I’m
full of excitement and anticipation. I wonder how my LR3 will do.
Actually, I’m wondering more about how I will do. I’ve got a lot more
confidence in my Land Rover’s abilities than in my own to be honest.
I have found the LR3 to be incredible in its off-road abilities – me, not
so much. I’m what you call a ‘newbie.’
Four hours into the journey, I come to the small town of Alligator
Creek. Shoot, I’m still in Florida? At a stop light, a couple of somewhat
toothless creatures in a pick-up shout over to me, “is that there a
snorkel?” I give a little nod and smile, discreetly check my door
locks, and continue on my way.
Feeling a bit anxious about what lessons I will be learning at MAR
(hopefully none involve blow-up animals). I learn something new
every time I go off-road. I learn more about my Rover’s strengths and
limitations. I learn how to maneuver tougher obstacles and different
terrains, and am gradually becoming a better, more confident
off-roader. I’ve been lucky though, to have had experienced mentors
and spotters to put my full trust in, and I think that is key. I have
found the seasoned Land Rover crowd to be so knowledgeable,
encouraging, and genuinely helpful to newbies – listen and learn, and
try to absorb their wisdom.
After a short-ish jaunt through the southeast corner of Georgia,
I pass the ‘Welcome to South Carolina’ sign. A little fatigued, but
making progress – three states to go! I’m feeling a bit antsy, so crank
up the some Old Crow Medicine Show tunes. Another LR3 whizzes by
me. I catch up to them, thinking we could entertain each other for
a spell, but they won’t even look in my direction. Figures, they’re
46
probably in a hurry to the Macy’s White Sale, I think cynically.
There aren’t too many LR3s on the trails yet. We are pioneers of
sorts I suppose. This lends to some skepticism and curiosity to new
Land Rovers. I’ve sort of gotten used to the stares, snickers, and ‘It’s
too clean!’ jabs when I roll up. It used to freak me out, but many have
changed their tune some after going on the trails with me. Sure, the
LR3 may not be for everybody, and like all vehicles, it has its short
comings, but for me it is absolutely perfect – it’s the Swiss Army Knife
of Land Rovers.
As I near Charlotte, North Carolina, my MAR anticipation is
wearing thin, diverted by a sore rump, and major boredom. I can do
it, just 4 ½ hours to go. Good Lord.
Welcome to Virginia! I could kiss that sign. Suddenly I get a burst
of energy, jam to the Old Crow Medicine Show for the umpteenth time
with new vigor. I call my darling friend Dan Chapman and let him
know I’m almost there. I will be hanging with him and friends from
Philadelphia Rovers. They are such a wonderful fun-loving bunch and
I can’t wait to see them all again. Also looking forward to meeting
some of the other legendary characters I’ve heard about. Let the good
times begin!
On the drive to Pearls Pond, I follow Dan Chapman in his 1997
trail-blazing Discovery Series I, and Walter Dent with his dear
tent-mate Bobbi in his souped up 2000 Discovery Series II. We are
arriving to the campsite on Wednesday, so there is just a handful of
Rover heads around for the first night. We stake out a prime spot,
setting up camp near the legendary Philly Rover’s tent. Tonight we just
kick back and relax, have some drinks from the full bar, and help
stuff event envelopes. Steve Andrews, who drives a Series Land Rover
with a Corvette engine, entertains us under the stars with his
strumming and singing talents into the wee hours. Walter cooks us
some late-night Dutch oven pork chops. We have much fun.
In the morning my head is feeling thick, and I could use a strong
cuppa and a shower. Okay, scratch that, there are no showers.
The sun is shining and it’s starting to heat up. Lots of people are
starting to roll in now – in all, 305 Land Rovers attending and
600-700 people this year. Around the Philly Rovers area Suzanna and
Ivan Via arrive in their Discovery I (hers) and Range Rover Classic
(his), Jeff Bangs with his lovely wife Jennifer and baby daughter Abbi,
Will ‘The Rover Whisperer’ Tillery, Jason Johnson (thank you for the
use of your camp shower!), Allysa Brown in her 2005 Range Rover,
and quite a few others are setting up camp. I am introduced to Garrett
Porterfield and JB McClure. Oh, are they total comedians! Be
prepared to have some sore ribs and cheeks when you are around
these two.

Zak Ruck’s white P38 is sitting on the grass with its bonnet open,
a lone and innocent victim. The ‘bandana gang’ decides to take
advantage of this opportunity. Poor Zak. Dan pulls the fuel pump fuse
from Zak’s truck, and then we all just sat back and wait. When Zak
returns his truck starts up…for a minute, then stalls out. Hmmm,
what could be wrong? Being the nice guys that they are, the gang goes
over to help ol’ Zak out - examining the engine, and giving extended
theories on what could possibly be wrong. I learn my first MAR
lesson – never leave your truck unattended.
Now one of MAR’s real LR super heroes is Will Tillery. Word on
the street has it that he can appear out of thin air in a Rover’s time of
need. Sure enough, I spot him under someone’s Range Rover.
He laid his magic hands on many grateful trucks this year, but he
needs a cape.
I should go no further without mentioning the weather. Yes, the
tradition has been broken, as MAR 2007 was a completely hot,
sweaty, dry, dust bowl this year, and the more people drove around
(thanks to those considerate folks showing their ‘cool’ factor by the
camping areas by the way), the worse it got. You could barely see, let
alone breathe through the huge fog of dust. Everyone had a nice coat
of orangey brown dust from head to toe and in every crevice of our
trucks - we are all looking and feeling just lovely. Wow, maybe I
should have packed a dust mask instead of the extra umbrella.
Trails were easier this year, I’m told, because of the unusual
dryness. After going on most every trail, I can clearly envision how
messy some areas would become by adding some wet, slippery mud
to the equation. They were still a lot of fun to drive though, and a few
challenging spots along the way. It’s rumored that mine was the first
LR3 to ever attempt Goat Hill. It’s pretty steep, and there’s one area
where the trees get super tight. It took several attempts to squeeze my
fat truck through, and only cleared by a couple millimeters. I can’t
imagine trying to go through that spot when it’s wet – reckon there’d
be a bit of damage done right about there.
I didn’t leave MAR without a little carnage though; ripped the
plastic rear bumper cover nearly off – twice. The bumper caught the
bank dropping in to the same mud hole on West River both Thursday
and Friday night. Nothing major, thank goodness, but when you hear
the horrid ripping sound as those bits come off, it sounds so much
worse. Everyone making those ‘Whoa!’ and ‘Ouch!’ noises doesn’t
help either.
On Thursday night I let Mike Noe, who owns a beautiful
blue Series II, try out a ‘modern day’ Land Rover. As a seasoned
off-roader, he did fantastic, once he figured out that ‘D’ was ‘Drive’.
Allysa let Steve drive her 2005 Range Rover for a while as well. It’s fun
to see these gents behind the wheels of our trucks. They drive so
careful ha-ha. It is also nice to have some girls to wheel with - Suz and
Allysa, rock on.
Friday morning, I drove up to the main rally area to check out
the vendors. On Friday night, we got to enjoy the best barbequed ribs
this side of the Mason Dixon Line, grilled to perfection by the
gourmet extraordinaire, Sean Roche, along with some prize winning
rum cake baked by JB’s mom. Man, lots of good eating under this
tent. Later, some of us went on a night run, and Mike was kind
(brave) enough to return the favor and let me drive his Series II,
while Dan drove my LR3 around a bit. What an awesome truck, it is
amazing to feel the differences in these beasts at opposite ends of the
spectrum. One day maybe I’ll have a Series too, baby blue please.
Unfortunately, we had to leave after the Friday night run due to a
prior commitment and missed out on Saturday’s events. They hadn’t
even brought out the blow-up animals yet, although I hear that indeed
they did! Luckily no word on the urinal cakes either, surely just nasty
gossip. What a great time it was, with equally great people. Other than
some shower facilities, and maybe a little rain, I couldn’t ask for a
better way to spend a weekend. So when is MAR 2008 again?
An LR3
Enthusiast Tells All
[How do Land Rover enthusiasts get started? We asked that very
question of Tami Sutherland. Here’s her response –ed.”]
“I am an internet software developer and run a small business out of
my home in Grottoes, VA. However, I grew up in Napoleon, MI, a
small farming community. As the saying goes, you can take the girl out
of the country but you can’t take the country out of the girl. I escape
to nature whenever I can.
“I love to travel and my business allots me the freedom to do so,
so I take advantage of that often. Road trips are my favorite. I enjoy a
variety of outdoor recreation: wheeling (of course), gardening,
camping, hiking, canoeing, swimming, biking; anything that gets me
away from concrete and into God’s country.”
“I had a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the transfer case failed
at 150,000 miles, right after the payments ended. I wasn’t planning on
a Land Rover. I test drove it at Dimitt Land Rover in Clearwater, FL. I
test drove it and I took it home. Then I wondered, “What have I
done?” I didn’t even haggle over the price. People warned me not to
go alone. I bought the ’05 in 2006 with 13,000 miles. I’ve had no
issues with major components.”
“As of now my Java Black LR3 SE now sports Nitto Terra Grappler
tires, a Superwinch EP9.0 and custom bumper, Hella 4000 driving
lamps and a G4 raised air intake. Oh yes, I also have a pink air tank
mounted in the rear of the truck. The color is right for me and the
tank lets me deflate and inflate tires without worry.”
“I’ll never own anything else but I would love a Series Rover one
day. I like to tinker on cars. I was in auto mechanics in high school
but engines have changed a lot since then.”
“I’m part chicken and part daredevil, if that makes any sense.
I’m kind of shy and get unsure of myself when faced with a new
challenge. But I push myself and don’t let my fears get in the way of
trying something new, I just close my eyes and leap in with both feet.
That’s how it was with my LR3.”
“When I bought it in Florida I had no plans to take it very far off
the pavement. It was to be your typical grocery getter and used for
road trips. Then I got to know some of the Land Rover folks – need I
say more? Ha-ha! They encouraged me to take it off-road saying, ‘The
LR3 is quite capable in stock form, maybe get some better tires’. At
first I was like yeah right, I don’t think so, but the next thing you
know, I buy some tires and the addiction begins.”
“I’ll never forget the maiden voyage to the swamp. It was at the
J.W. Corbett Nature Preserve in the Florida Everglades. I pleaded
my friend Tamy to come with me and we roll up to all these heavily
modified rigs in my shiny new LR3. The people were very friendly and
welcoming, but we couldn’t help feeling a tad out of place. It was a
double whammy; we were women and we were in an LR3. Had that
fight or flight moment, but gave it a go.”
“As my head’s spinning going down the trails, trying to figure out
what to do with all these gadgets like terrain response control, hill
descent control, stability control, somebody says over the CB, ‘Ok
we’re coming to our first mud hole. Get ready to winch out the Tami’s
in the LR3.’ Panic strikes and all eyes are watching. Well, I went a
little too fast and sploosh, a wave of water comes up over the hood,
up over the roof, but then out we come, successfully, on the other
side. Hoots & hollers everywhere! My truck got the nickname Rubber
Ducky that day.”
“I’ve traveled to the SCARR [South Central Area Rover Rally,
Texas Land Rover Club] and hope to make it to northeastern events
this year.”
Employee Profile:
A Look at Dirk Parkins
By Mike Koch
When a Land Rover enthusiast dedicates over twenty years of his life
to working at Rovers North, it’s only proper to explore his first Land
Rover experience and move forward from there.
After growing up outside of Philadelphia, Dirk moved to
southern Vermont to learn how to work with draft horses. Following
that, he moved to the Adirondacks of New York to log with horses.
But before long, it was back to Vermont for Dirk when his previous
employers moved north to Fairfax, where they bought a sugar bush
that Dirk logged for them. Fairfax is the next town north of Westford.
To this day, neither town possesses a single traffic light; they’re on the
rural side. His employers in Fairfax drove a 109” station wagon,
which they bought from Mark Letorney. Dirk admired the Rover and
said to himself: “That’s a great vehicle that’s meant to be worked on.
I’ve got to get a Land Rover!” He contacted Mark and got word of a
1970 88” that was for sale from a local who had done some welding
for Mark. It was the summer of 1984 when Dirk acquired and rebuilt
his first Land Rover. “I wanted to learn how to work on it and in
exchange for doing some stuff around here, Mark taught me how to
work on a Land Rover and the rest is history.” Unintentionally, he
rolled the 88”, but naturally rebuilt it. Since his first day of employment
at Rovers North in December of 1984, Dirk has held an assortment
of positions including: turning a wrench, boxing parts in the
shipping department, answering the phones in sales, and working in
the receiving department also. Currently, Dirk is Parts Manager, “trying
to maintain a constant flow of parts from the UK through our
doors.” When he’s not busy at Rovers North, Dirk is very active with
his wonderful family.
A 1967 IIA 109” military was Dirk’s second Rover, which
happens to be his favorite Land Rover because “ it was built to the
highest standards and simplest to work on.” Dirk’s next project was
to rebuild a 1968 IIA that he gave to a friend as a wedding present.
Wearing a smile, he told me that he ended up owning that one twice.
Presently, Dirk drives a 109”/110 hybrid (also rebuilt, rolled, and
rebuilt), which he mainly uses as a vacation vehicle when he’s not
using it in the woods near his home in Norwich, Vermont.
After asking around the office for a good Dirk story, I came
across this rather riveting one. Back in 1985, Rovers North was
importing brand new Range Rovers before they were available for
sale in North America. The Range Rovers were shipped from the UK,
across the North Atlantic, in 40’ containers. Once the containers
reached Westford on the back of a truck, the Rovers were backed
down a pair of ramps and into our parking lot, which was very
confined at the time. Mark was cautiously backing a shiny new Range
Rover down the set of ramps when suddenly one ramp snapped.
Immediately, the axles of the Range Rover articulated to match the
precarious angle, as they were designed to perform. Unable to exit
the vehicle, because of the consequences of it rolling over, Mark was
trapped in the Range Rover. Bear in mind that there was a
U.S. Customs agent overseeing this circus. Dirk disappeared
momentarily but returned in an instant, chainsaw screaming
as he quickly cut pieces of lumber to stack up under the cracked
ramp. Mark and the Range Rover backed down on to terra
firma without harm.
To summarize, I asked Dirk the following:
How have Land Rovers influenced your life:
“They’re the most consistent part for twenty plus years now.”
That’s a significant amount of Land Rover experience and surely
the reason he’s had the answer to every esoteric Series tech question
I’ve asked him in the five years that we’ve worked together.
REDUCE - RE-USE - RE-FLAP
Living in Vermont, we experience one of the most corrosive
environments in the country. Harsh winters mean tons of road salt
and with more dirt roads than paved roads, our Land Rovers receive
a good abrasive blast of gravel to enhance the salt’s penetration. It is
documented that salt will increase the rate of corrosion by a factor of
900 times the normal rate. Unfortunately, it does not end with winter.
To combat the loss of road surface from dust, estimated at over 2.5
inches on average per year, towns liberally apply highly corrosive
liquid chloride to their dirt roads to ensure you will continue rusting
right on through the summer.
In this never-ending fight against corrosion, front mud flaps play
a key role protecting the underbody and chassis of our Land Rovers.
Because they literally take a beating and are often saddled with
built-up ice and snow, their life span is generally limited to about 3
years before they begin to crack along their flex line. Unlike most
failed parts, a broken mud flap can be assigned a new, and vital role
in the underside protection of your Land Rover.
_______
________
Torn front mud flap is replaced with a new one, and is cut square below
its metal bracket.
Planned Obsolescence? Defender inner wheel well is galvanized steel and
offers a high level of corrosion protection except for the area left open in
front of the toe box. This was not always the case. Early Land Rover 90
and 110 wheel wells were built to protect the steel toe box and doorpost
area from debris and corrosion. Only Land Rover can explain why it was
cut out on later Defenders to expose this vulnerable area.
Place the trimmed old mud flap in front of the toe box. Notice how it
nicely fits into this space with its edge fitting into the stepped edge of the
flexible eyebrow. Mark on the mud flap the location of the 2 self-tapping
screws that secure the inner wheel well near the top of the cut out area.
An easy way to do this is to dab paint, or white out on to the screw heads
and press the mud flap into position. Then with a hole punch or drill, put
2 holes into the mud flap were it is marked by the paint.
Screw the mud flap into place. Ideally, the factory self-tapping screws and
washers are replaced with stainless steel screws and large stainless
fender washers, as shown.
BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL
By Jeffrey B. Aronson
Oh the weather outside is frightful
But my Rover’s so delightful
When other cars won’t go
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Oh, boy, it’s the beginning of December
and this island has received its first
substantial, it’s-going-to-stick snowstorm.
The snow fell so hard and thick that the ferry
service had to shut down when the radar
systems couldn’t penetrate the snowfall. Then
the winds picked up, the seas rose, and the
ferry cancelled out for another day.
Doom and gloom? Hardly! As a kid, I
would have grabbed my Flexible Flyer and
headed for a hill or slope. Now, I grab one of
the Series II-A’s and head for any unplowed
road or trail.
There’s something special about riding
around in the snow. You do need to be
careful that the several inches or feet of snow
don’t hide something substantial, like a ditch,
boulder or log, but all that does is force you
to slow down – never a bad idea. It is
comforting to remember that very cold air
holds little moisture; that means it will rarely
be bone-chilling cold when it is snowing
heavily outside. That’s even better news for
me; I never did get around to swapping out
the canvas top for the safari top on the QE I,
my ’66 II-A.
I bundled up and stepped outside into
the snowstorm. With the snow falling heavily
and steadily, the local snowplows had
remained in the garage pending a let up in the
storm. That meant that I had most of the local
roads to myself. Since I caretake some
summer properties here, it gave me a perfect
excuse to run through the 12- 15 inches of
snow that had fallen on unplowed trails in
different parts of the island. With the Rovers
North Mansfield heater in the car, and a nice
new Rovers North canvas top, I was fairly
snug and warm inside the car. The Lucas
wipers on a II-A operate with minds of their
own, totally unsynchronized. They also sweep
across a tiny part of the windshield at a
leisurely pace. Much snow can accumulate
before the wiper makes its next pass. Every so
often, you need to just stop and remove some
built up snow off the windshield.
Last September I purchased a set of B F
Goodrich All Terrain M+S tires and this storm
provided their first test in the snow. They have
aggressive treads which make them a bit
noisy on paved roads but helpful in mud and
snow. It was well worth the considerable cost;
the Rover pushed through the snow and drifts
nicely. When a steep incline or side angle
forced some slippage, shifting down into low
range did the trick.
After an hour or so, more trucks
appeared on the roads so I decided to do
something useful and secure more firewood.
As the snow fell, I loaded up the rear of the
88” with split logs. There’s no doubt that a
fully laden 88” has even better traction than
an unloaded one. It almost made me want to
leave the wood in the car!
Running in the snow is not that hard on
the Rover. You do have to be careful of hidden
obstacles, as you might during a water
crossing, but there’s nothing abrasive against
swivel balls or seals like when you’re running
through mud. You do have to make certain
that you don’t get a lot of ice packed around
the wheels or brakes, but it’s unlikely to
damage anything.
Driving around during the storm
reminded me of the numerous travels I’ve
made in my II-A during significant storms.
Flying into Boston from Nashville at midnight,
I discovered the reason for our flight’s long
delay; New England was buried in snow. I
quickly found that the snowplows had not yet
started their work. The snow came down so
thickly that it was difficult to see the highways
and roads. You could barely exceed 40 mph
for the trip; add an extra two hours for the
drive. The II-A never missed a beat.
On another morning, I left Gorham, NH
for a job in Augusta, ME. The normal 2 ½
hour drive stretched out as the roads proved
52
quite snowy and slick. The Rover, in 4 wheel
high range for the entire trip, got me there
safely. Of course, when I arrived in Augusta,
the entire city was shut down. Another time, I
drove nearly 4 hours to give a talk in Eastport,
ME. That night, a major storm dumped a lot
of snow on the ground. I was the guest in a
B & B that morning, and the hostess made
strong hints to her husband that “maybe we
should put Jeff up tonight. It’s not safe to
drive.” He looked out over his newspaper,
saw my green Series II-A in his driveway and
said, “Look what he’s driving. He’ll be fine.”
So much for a free night’s stay. That drive took
one hour longer than usual because of the
deep snowfall.
Decades ago, VW ran a television ad that
showed boots crunching down new fallen
snow. You saw a door open and a man get
into an original Beetle. The voice-over asked
“have you ever wondered how the man who
drives the snowplow, gets to the snowplow?”
Well, now you know – a Land Rover.
_______
________
Jeremy Hackett runs a specialty clothing store
in London. In the New York Times, he wrote
of finding an “ancient, patched up Barbour
jacket.” The Beaufort model “spoke of damp
dogs sleeping on tartan coat linings in the
back of battered Land Rovers, of point to
points and Badminton Horse Trials, all things
dear to an Englishman.” He pulled out his
old Barbour “with its oily texture, brown
corduroy collar and brass zipper as strong as
a railway line” and decided that “I will wear
my shabby Barbour the next time I go
shopping on Sloane Street – but I think I’ll
leave the green wellies in the Land Rover.”
The Barbour coat, and its waxed-cotton
cousins, requires some maintenance. It was
the latest word in water repellency and
warmth some decades ago and has certainly
been surpassed since then. As long as you
maintain it, it will always work, it will last and
it will never become obsolete. As an iconic
piece of clothing it ranks with Hunter
Wellingtons. Many Land Rover enthusiasts
find they gravitate to owning both items.
This connection came to mind as once
again the relentless production of goods
entices us to “improve” every successful
product. Marketers want to believe that all of
us live in breathless anticipation of the next
awesome product. They may be wrong.
If you’re a runner you have undoubtedly
experienced the frustration of your favorite
pair of running shoes being out of production
when you go for a replacement pair. Are you
listening to me, New Balance? Are you listening
to me, Land Rover?
There’s no denying that the Range Rover
Sport and the LR 3 have been hugely
successful for Land Rover in the US market.
Along with the revamped LR 2 and the Range
Rover, these models have propelled Land
Rover into sales record territory, but at what
cost? It’s unlikely that the Discovery Series I
owner, looking to replace his/her 5-speed,
3.9 liter V-8, with a manual transmission,
shade tree mechanic-friendly engine, and
separate chassis will find comfort in the new
Land Rover selections. In fact, he’s out of
luck. The Range Rover Classic, Defender
90/110, and Series Land Rover owners have
also been left in the dust. What replaces those
vehicles is…nothing.
That’s when the enthusiast has an option
not available to most consumers. Land Rover
recognizes the unusually high connection its
owners make with their vehicles. Unlike most
manufacturers, Land Rover actually supports
older vehicles with an extensive parts
network. You can keep your classic Land
Rover operating as a daily driver, a work or
recreational vehicle.
_______
________
In case you hadn’t noticed, there’s a
presidential election coming up in 2008.
Every possible form of media, from
newspapers and television to web pages, text
messaging, podcasting and online events, has
tried to get your attention. In 1964, Land
Rover provided a new medium, the 109”
Station Wagon. Jaime Kitman, in a great
article in Automobile (November 1996),
wrote of his father’s quixotic quest for the
Republican nomination for President. Jamie
was in second grade when his father,
newspaper columnist Marvin Kitman, put his
name into the New Hampshire primary.
Looking for business support Kitman enlisted
the help of the Rover Motor Company, which
provided him with a 109” SW. Rover officials
in New York said “We are surely proud to
have a Land Rover be the official vehicle from
which you will stand for office. It has been
used for varied purposes – honorable and
otherwise – but never, to our knowledge, has
a candidate for office made use of its great
go-anywhere features to carry his campaign
to the people. Great good luck to you, sir.”
Land Rover and Kitman ran a print ad
extolling the virtues of a Land Rover as a
campaign car. Quoting Kitman, that ad says
“in my line of work, as a Republican
presidential candidate, the campaign car is a
key to success… what I like best about my
Land Rover is that it goes anywhere. In New
Hampshire, it took me right up to the ski
slopes, solving one of my most vexing
problems as a politician. I don’t like to shake
hands. My Land Rover made it possible
for me to park next to the ski tows and
personally wave to 3,000 voters as they went
by – none the wiser. If you are planning to run
for President, or even Prime Minister, I would
like to call your attention to the virtues of the
Land Rover as the perfect campaign vehicle.”
What Jaime Kitman remembers about the
car was that he got to play in the “way, way
back” of a “slow and rough riding vehicle.
Optional Kodiak heater notwithstanding,
I also remember it as quite chilly. But I
remember it mostly as deeply, undeniably
cool. That’s why I spent the next 30 years
pestering my old man to buy one… if he
hadn’t run for President, I might never
have been introduced to Land Rovers, and I
wouldn’t have my current vehicle of choice, a
1995 Defender 90 SW.”
So when a presidential aspirant contacts
you, ask him/her the marque of their
campaign car. It will tell you more about the
candidate than any platform statement or
webcast. Anyone with a Land Rover would get
my vote.
SIGHTINGS
The Sightings Editor has been very busy shoveling
snow, pulling out stuck cars with his Series II-A
88”, splitting wood and banking foundations.
That’s so he can lug the bundles of mail into the
house to work on Sightings. They do make for
great reading on a cold winter’s day.
Let's kick into the new year with a reminder of
the rules:
Rule # 1 - All Sightings receive recognition
and our appreciation, but not necessarily a mug.
We reward only those Sightings that capture
the unique qualities of Land Rovers and their
owners, and display them in a distinctive way.
Rule #2 - If your Sighting does not really
surprise you, it won't surprise us, either, and you
won't get a mug. We're delighted, but not
surprised, that Land Rovers appear in British
television programmes, British publications,
films with British themes, and shows about
African safaris. You shouldn't be surprised,
either, and should consider looking for other
ways to get a coffee mug.
Rule #3 - At an ever-changing date before
publication we close off the Sightings. If we've
mentioned the Sighting in an earlier issue, we
won't mention it again. If you're new to the
family of Land Rover enthusiasts, you may not
have seen your Sighting in an earlier issue.
Rule #4 - We're not outfitting your kitchen.
If you qualify, please remember - one mug per
Sighting per issue.
Rule #5- Sightings that are Land Rover
references in books go to our Literary Land
Rover editor for mention, but only when space
permits.
Rule #6 - Psst... if we can't read you name
and address because of atrocious penmanship,
we can't recognize your Sighting nor send you a
mug. Psst...E-mail submissions - remember we
can't send a mug by e-mail. Send us your real
name and shipping address, too.
Rule #7 - Grudgingly, very grudgingly, the
Editor admits he might make an error. Let me
know if you think you've been jobbed, but all
decisions of the Editor are final.
Perfectly timed for the Christmas season
was the inclusion of a tree ornament with a 109”
SW pictured on it. James Dargan, Plymouth, MA
noted it in the Gumps catalogue and received two
for Christmas. When Tessco electronics wanted
to answer the question “Where can SCADA go?”
they let the sight of a 109” SW traveling alongside
a pipeline answer the question. Eric Allen,
Burtchville, MI, saw the ad.
J Crew adheres to a certain look and style
for its clothes and catalogues; Land Rovers fit
them well. The November catalogue features a
red Series Rover, taken on the Isle of Skye.
American firms do know how to appeal to
Anglophiles in the US. Jeff Jambers, Corpus
Christi, TX, Tim Silva, Quantico, VA, Robin
McKelvey, Kennett Square, PA and Paul Hai,
Necomb, NY, all noted the use of the Land Rover.
Rule #2 aside, we are surprised.
When Field and Stream magazine wanted to
assure readers that its website had the most
informed opinions of hunting and fishing goods,
it chose the front of a Defender 90 to signify
expertise. Mike McNulty, Arcadia, FL and
Thomas Castalado, Lakewood, NY noted the
inclusion.
Sports Illustrated includes ads on its
website for Rock Resorts which scrolls photos of
exotic locations. One includes a sand-colored
Military Lightweight carrying distinctly civilian
passengers – unless the British Army has now
added bikinis to its official uniform styles. Robin
McKelvey, Kennett Square, PA, noted the
Sighting. Eric Sousa, Melrose, MA, spotted a
Defender 130 Fire Engine at work on
Foxnews.com. We’re assuming the work was in
the UK?
BraeVal makes sporting shirts, and in
a simple ad in Shooting Sportsman magazine,
displays a shirt, a passport and a key with
a Green Oval keychain, notes Bernard
McMahon, Washington, DC. Spicing up an
article on English hunting clothing, Esquire’s
Black Book includes a Series I in the photo
spread, reports Chris
Whybrew, Phoenix, AZ. Mike
Burwell, Dade City, FL, noted a
Defender charging up a hill
in a Globetrotter episode on
mountain biking in Cyprus.
Land Rovers are familiar
vehicles in Costa Rica; they were
once assembled there in
the 1960’s and an aggressive
distributor keeps bringing in
Defenders, Discoverys and
Range Rovers. So it’s not
a surprise that when the Tico
Times wrote a story on
adventure tourism in Costa Rica,
there’s a Defender 90 in one
photo. Gerald Snyder,
Minnetrista, MN, sent in the
article.
Delta Airlines wants you to
vacation in Costa Rica, too,
so they’ve included a partial shot
of a Series Land Rover on their
website promoting their
vacation packages. Paul
Hester, State College, PA, and
Ben Bailey, Portland, OR, captured
the Sighting for us. Hans
Salinger, Arlington, VA, noted
that the T. Jeffrey Safari
Company, advertising in SCI’s
Journal of Big Game Hunting,
includes the profile of a Series
Rover in their logo.
The trailer for the new
movie The Bucket List, about
two men fulfilling their dreams
in the last days of their lives,
includes a Defender 90. “What a
way to go out,” noted spotters
Josh and Marion Peklo,
Davidson, NC. Douglas
Shepard, E. Sarasota, FL, was watching the
Disney Channel film The Little Vampire with his
son, Chandler, who was the first to spot a
Discovery Series II in the movie.
In one of the least-expected Sightings
received, Gary Cook, Fort Wayne, IN, noted that
the Louisville Ladder website features one of
its products on a Discovery Series II. More
expected was the use of Series Land Rovers at
play in Africa in a Ford “Lionman” commercial,
notes Terry Immm, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Harbor Marketing in the UK wanted to bolster the
image of G H Bass, the one-time Maine footwear
manufacturer, in England so they used a
Defender 110 in their British ads. John Crouse,
Arvada, CO, sent us a copy of the ad. Watching
CSI-Miami one night, Ray Young, Romney WV
was dismayed that the Range Rover shown in the
beginning of the show was eliminated from the
action when it was set ablaze. Jim Salyers, Jr,
King George, VA, spotted a Series 109” in an
online video clip from Iraq.
When the Army published winter safety
driving tips in Soldiers magazine, Eric Corbett,
Missoula, MT and Naipo Robertson, El Paso,
TX, noted the use of a Defender 90 SW in a
snowstorm – complete with British plates. Maybe
the Army Humvee would have gotten stuck? Rule
# 2 aside, we are surprised again!
Rule #3 undoubtedly exasperates Sighters,
but we always want to give credit to those who
submit Sightings after publication deadlines. We
acknowledged that Beretta featured a Series Land
Rover in its recent catalogue. Ahmad Ijaz,
Northport, AL, Shawn Palmer, Cumming, GA,
and Rob Smith, Cascade, CO, sent in Sightings
after deadline, Shawn Palmer, Dayton Wright,
Jamestown, TN, Frank Sands, Katy, TX, and
John Tackley, Chester, VA, all spotted the Texaco
ad featuring an Arizona Land Rover Club
Defender climbing a hill all sent their Sightings
after publication of our November/December
issue.
We’ve awarded mugs for the Garmin ad
campaign, the one featuring the Discovery, before
and it’s nice to see that it has returned to the air.
D. Aaron Conway, St. Louis Park, MO, Debra
Scialla [see Rule # 6], Eric Corbett, Missoula,
MT and Henry McQueen, Lancaster, PA all
spotted the rerun of the ad. Dennis Saltys, Kent,
WA, and Steve Quigley, Flagstaff, AZ, noted that
American Life Insurance was rerunning its ad
featuring a Series Land Rover.
Shawn Palmer, Cumming, GA, noted that
Orvis International Travel features a Series Rover
on the cover of its brochure. Bill Smith, Arvada,
CO, liked the South African Tourism ad on the
bonnet of a Series Land Rover that ran in National
Geographic. He particularly noted that the
Tourism Board chose an older Rover when newer
Defenders are assembled in South Africa. Kevin
Kernohan [see Rule #6] noted Land Rovers
at work in Gaza in the online edition of the UK
newspaper The Telegraph.
