his teach<strong>in</strong>gs. He co<strong>in</strong>cides with him <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> moral censorship<br />

of a world which is united around science, <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

<strong>and</strong> progress <strong>and</strong> which, because of this, suffers acute<br />

nihilism. We are speak<strong>in</strong>g about a world which is impervious<br />

to value <strong>and</strong> to feel<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> light has gone out:<br />

“it is as if <strong>the</strong> sh<strong>in</strong>e were erased from everyth<strong>in</strong>g, everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is dead” <strong>and</strong> “one suddenly realizes that one's mere<br />

existence is still completely empty, deserted” (Wittgenste<strong>in</strong><br />

1997 198-199). For this reason, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se dark <strong>and</strong> desolate<br />

coord<strong>in</strong>ates, au<strong>the</strong>nticity, <strong>the</strong> value of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual, becomes<br />

an arduous task: “For <strong>in</strong> times like <strong>the</strong>se, genu<strong>in</strong>e<br />

strong characters simply leave <strong>the</strong> arts aside <strong>and</strong> turn to<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> somehow <strong>the</strong> worth of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual man<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ds expression” (Wittgenste<strong>in</strong> 1980 §29).<br />

For Wittgenste<strong>in</strong>, cultural disappo<strong>in</strong>tment prevails,<br />

but he believes that <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual may still have <strong>the</strong><br />

chance to express himself. It is a question of rais<strong>in</strong>g<br />

oneself to <strong>the</strong> higher <strong>and</strong> undescribable perspective of <strong>the</strong><br />

mystic, touch<strong>in</strong>g upon aes<strong>the</strong>tic <strong>and</strong> religious hope. The<br />

price to be paid, however, is <strong>the</strong> creation of someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from this feel<strong>in</strong>g which cannot be communicated, cannot<br />

be said <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> everyday common language, which is <strong>the</strong><br />

language of argumentation <strong>and</strong> criticism. So a victory,<br />

which could almost be described a Pyrrhic victory, is<br />

celebrated of au<strong>the</strong>nticity over <strong>the</strong> nihilism of <strong>the</strong> western<br />

civilisation.<br />
