George Lohmiller, one of JFO’s original members (#15),
passed away January 8th at the age of 83. I never met
George and a family member called to tell me of his passing.
He lived in Colorado and loved collecting openers.
Bill MuGrage, another early member of JFO (#122),
passed on February 11th. He was 70 years old and was a
long time collector of Northwest U. S. breweriana and
openers. He survived by his wife, Ellen and a son. Bill
and Ellen ran a large eBay store called “premium-pc” (for
Premium Pacific Coast). Ellen will be selling Bill’s collection
through the store on eBay.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of George
and Bill.
Also two former JFO spouses have had recent health issues.
Cora Whelan was diagnosed with breast cancer and
has completed successful treatments. She is doing well.
Kay Schmitt had to have stents placed in her due to heart
problems. She is doing well and hopes to make the convention
in Troy. We certainly need someone there to tell
good jokes. Their addresses are in the membership list in
this issue.
Folks it has been one year since my operation and I am doing
very well. The diet is somewhat of a challenge as far as
what I can eat and not eat. After last year I am looking forward
to a pain free and feeling good convention.
Don Bull sent in the ad shown at the right. An interesting
new use for a B-21 style bottle opener. You have to wonder
how many good beer openers met this fate? I have
seen a few “B”s where the very opener end has been
made into a screwdriver. This would certainly seem
much easier to alter than doing what is shown at the right.
Also note Don did some fabulous research on the Electro-
Chemical Engraving Co. of New York City. They made
“Sliders” (“M-3”s and “M-73”s) along with “A-26”s, “A-
38”s, “C-1”s and “C-2”s. Check out
http://www.bullworks.net/daily/20090315.htm . If you
have anything to add please let Don know.
August 1920 Ad from the Popular Mechanics magazine.
Does anyone have one made into a screwdriver?
