A Prayer for the
Armed Forces
Almighty God, stretch
forth Your mighty arm to strengthen and protect
the men and women of our Armed Forces. As they face
the myriad of challenges and decisions that each day is
destined to bring, may they be anchored by their faith,
protected by Your presence and comforted by the knowledge
that they are loved by You and by this community
of faith. Grant that, meeting danger with courage, and all
occasions with discipline and loyalty, they may truly
serve the cause of justice and peace to the honor of your
holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Way of the Cross
It remains our sincere hope that through word and
deed, education and example, we young and old
one heritage or another, would all come to know
that our care for Our Church — His really, is done
through small and not so small gestures of help
and support. As a source of hope and inspiration it
is our intention to publish those names in print
who have done outstanding work in the course of
the week to “plant a rose” so to speak along the
way as we carry the cross in the glory of the victory
“He” won. Our part though small can and
does grow. We might need to see the proof. The
names are both a thank you and attempt to have
lots of roses where ever “the cross” is.

Celebrating The Abundance of God’s Goodness
While Thanksgiving is traditionally a time in the United States when families feast on the abundance of
turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pies, it is important to be mindful of the food and hunger situation in our
country and our world. We remember on this feast of gratitude for bounty and abundance, that not all of our brothers
and sisters are able to share in this banquet. Why? What is happening in our world? Below are a few facts:
More than 800 million people in the world go hungry.
In developing countries, 6 million children die each year, mostly from hunger-related causes.
In the United States, 12 million children live in households where people have to skip meals or eat less to make ends
meet. That means one in ten households in the U.S. are living with hunger or are at risk of hunger.
More than 840 million people in the world are malnourished—799 million of them are from the developing world. More
than 153 million of them are under the age of 5.
Of the 6.2 billion people in today's world, 1.2 billion live on less than $1 per day.
Thanksgiving Table Prayer
As bread that was scattered on the hillside was gathered together and made one, so, too, we, your
people, scattered throughout the world, are gathered together around your table and become one.
Let us eat and drink today with grateful thanks for this oneness with all, as we, in spirit, invite the stranger and welcome
the poor with us at our table this Thanksgiving Day. May we be more aware of our call to reach out to others in our
daily lives, and so be transformed by your presence within.
Our gratitude today is for you, God of all, and your blessings on us through one another. Open our eyes
to those who are poor, our ears to the cry of those in need, our hearts
to the oppressed and our lives to your call to be peacemakers.
Today and forever.

General Meeting
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
60 ANNIVERSARY
November 21 at 11:30 a.m.
The day will start with a Memorial Mass in the Chapel,
that will be followed by a meeting in Canning Hall, plus
games and a new wrapped table prize worth $1.00 to be
used as prizes.
Please note that we are asking all members to bring an
unwrapped toy for a boy or girl. Make a child happy this
Christmas.
Refreshments will be served.
This year marks the 60 Anniversary of the St. Vincent De
Paul Society here at St. Ferdinand’s parish. The society
has been helping needy families in the parish for all of
those 60 years, We could not have done this without the
help of the generous people here in the parish. Every
year at this time we again ask for your help.
The Thanksgiving collection and the second collection
next Sunday will help us continue our work here in the
parish for another year. We ask that you be as generous
as possible because without your help we could not do
what we do here in the parish.

our work in your prayers.

School for Girls will be hosting its 5th Annual Breakfast
with Santa Fundraiser.
We are looking for crafters who would like to purchase a
table to sell their wares. Rental cost is $25 per table.
The event will run from 8:30 am until 1:00 pm and will
take place at the school which is located at 3000 N.

FAITH FOR ALL SEASONS
The St. Constance Parish Pastoral Council’s on-going adult education series,
“Faith for All Seasons,” continues with two free, adult education sessions
on Tuesday, November 27 and Wednesday, November 28 in the parish’s
Borowczyk Hall, 5856 W. Ainslie, Chicago, from 7:00-8:00PM.
Fr. Robert Sprott, O.F.M. of St. Peter’s in the Loop Parish and long-time
guest lecturer at the Newberry Library in Chicago will lead this two-day
Advent mission entitled, “the Lord is at Hand: Advent’s Prayer and Preparation.”
Light refreshments will be served on both nights following Fr.
Sprott’s talk.

Thanksgiving Divorce
A man in Phoenix calls his
son in New York the day before
Thanksgiving and says,"I hate to ruin your day,
but I have to tell you that your mother and I are
divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough.
"Pop, what are you talking about?" the son
screams. We can't stand the sight of each other
any longer," the father says. "We're sick of each
other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you
call your sister in Chicago and tell her."
Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on
the phone. "Like heck they're getting divorced,"
she shouts, "I'll take care of this,"
She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at
her father, "You are NOT getting divorced. Don't
do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my
brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow.
Until then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR
ME?" and hangs up.

On Sunday, November 25th Bishop Paprocki
will host an Andrew Dinner at St.
John of the Cross
Parish.
Kolbe House, the Archdiocesan Jail Ministry, invites you to participate
in our Advent retreat via email, starting on Wednesday, November
28.
Every Wednesday during Advent you will receive an email that contains
a short reflection written by one of the jail chaplains, some suggested
actions to do, and a prayer to say. This retreat is open to anyone
who wants to reflect on his/her life in relation to the Advent
Scriptures to prepare for Christmas.
If you are interested in participating in our Advent email retreat,

will not be shared with anyone else. You will not be asked for any
donations in these emails. Please feel free to invite whomever you
think would be interested in participating in this Advent email retreat.
This dinner is for men high school age and

60-ROCZNICA POWSTANIA
TOWARZYSTWA
ŚW. WINCENTEGO DE PAUL
W tym roku Towarzystwo Św. Wincentego De Paul przy
parafii Św. Ferdynanda obchodzi 60 rocznicę powstania.
Towarzystwo to od 60 lat pomaga potrzebującym
rodzinom z naszej parafii. Oczywiście pomoc ta nie
byłaby możliwa
bez ogromnej
ofiarności i
wsparcia
wszystkich
parafian.
Tradycją
jest, że
właśnie
teraz w tym
okresie
Świąt
Dziękczynienia
ponownie
zwracamy się o
pomoc. Taca ,
która zostanie zebrana
w Dzień Dziękczynienia oraz druga składka w niedzielę,
25 listopada będzie jak zwykle przeznaczona na ten cel i
właśnie te zebrane fundusze pozwolą nam na kontynuację
naszej pracy przez kolejny rok.
Prosimy o hojność, gdyż bez waszej pomocy nie
jesteśmy w stanie robić nadal tego co czynimy już od 60
lat.

Stowarzyszenie Apostołów Bożego Miłosierdzia
"Faustinum"
Życie i posłannictwo s. Faustyny
zain-spirowało apostolski ruch Bożego
Miłosierdzia. Jego zadaniem jest dążenie
do chrześcijańskiej doskonałości drogą,
którą ona ukazała oraz głoszenie życiem i
słowem tajemnicy miłosierdzia Bożego, a
także wypraszanie go dla całego świata.
Ruch ten tworzą zakony kontemplacyjne,
zgromadzenia czynne, kapłani, osoby
świeckie, różne wspólnoty, stowarzyszenia,
bractwa i indywidualni
czciciele Bożego Miłosierdzia, słowem -
wszyscy, którzy w jakikolwiek sposób
podejmują te zadania.
Jedną z tych wspólnot jest
Stowarzyszenie Apostołów Bożego
Miłosierdzia Faustinum, które erygował
Metropolita Krakowski Franciszek kard.
Macharski 6 marca 1996 roku, nadając
mu kościelną osobowość prawną. Łączy
ono kapłanów, osoby konsekrowane i
świeckie, które pragną służyć orędziu
Miłosierdzia Bożego pod przewodnictwem
Zgromadzenia Sióstr Matki
Bożej Miłosierdzia i opieką duchową
ojców jezuitów.
Celem stowarzyszenia jest:
• dążenie do doskonałości chrześcijańskiej drogą ufności w stosunku do Boga i miłosierdzia względem
bliźnich,
• poznawanie i głoszenie tajemnicy miłosierdzia Bożego,
• wypraszanie miłosierdzia Bożego dla całego świata, szczególnie dla grzeszników oraz kapłanów i
osób zakonnych.
Działalność stowarzyszenia Faustinum koncentruje się na formacji apostołów Bożego Miłosierdzia,
która opiera się na ponad stuletnim doświadczeniu duchowym i apostolskim Zgromadzenia Sióstr Matki Bożej
Miłosierdzia ubogaconym mistycznym życiem i posłannictwem św. s. Faustyny. Ścisła formacja trwa 3 lata i
prowadzona jest w formie spotkań, rekolekcji i różnych publikacji. Temu celowi służy również kwartalnik
Orędzie Miłosierdzia.
Wpis do stowarzyszenia odbywa się na podstawie wypełnionej deklaracji wolontariusza, w której dana
osoba zobowiązuje się do poznawania tajemnicy miłosierdzia Bożego, troski o postawę ufności, czyli
pełnienie woli Bożej zawartej w przykazaniach i obowiązkach stanu, ponadto do odmawiania koronki do
Miłosierdzia Bożego oraz spełniania w ciągu dnia przynajmniej jednego aktu miłosierdzia wobec bliźnich z
miłości do Jezusa przez dobry czyn, słowo lub modlitwę.
Wolontariusz w sposób luźny wiąże się ze stowarzyszeniem. Korzysta z dóbr duchowych, to znaczy z
tych obietnic, jakie Pan Jezus dał tym wszystkim, którzy czczą i szerzą cześć Jego miłosierdzia. Nie może
jednak posiadać legitymacji i odznaki stowarzyszenia, nie może pełniej uczestniczyć w jego pracach ani
wybierać i być wybieranym do jego władz. Te uprawnienia mają tylko członkowie, którzy bardziej angażują
się w działalność stowarzyszenia i ściślej z nim się wiążą, uczestnicząc w duchowości i misji apostolskiej
Zgromadzenia Sióstr Matki Bożej Miłosierdzia. Członkowie po odpowiedniej formacji mogą także składać
przyrzeczenia oddania się i służby w dziele miłosierdzia Bożego na określony czas (rok) lub całe życie.
Członek stowarzyszenia Faustinum jest osobą, która spośród wielu dróg dążenia do chrześcijańskiej

Zgromadzenia Sióstr Matki Bożej Miłosierdzia, tzn. w jego duchowości i misji apostolskiej jaką jest
współpraca z Bożym miłosierdziem w dziele ratowania zagubionych dusz.
Oddziały stowarzyszenia w postaci podstawowych jednostek organizacyjnych, jakimi są Wspólnoty
Apostołów Bożego Miłosierdzia, mogą być powołane przez Zarząd Naczelny na szczeblu parafii za zgodą
biskupów diecezjalnych i w porozumieniu z proboszczami, gdy na danym terenie będzie najmniej 10
członków (nie wolontariuszy) Faustinum, a wśród nich osoba przygotowana do prowadzenia formacji -
kapłan).
Aktualnie stowarzyszenie zrzesza wolontariuszy i członków z 27 krajów świata. Członkami mogą być
tylko osoby władające językiem polskim, angielskim, niemieckim lub czeskim, gdyż w tych językach
Zgromadzenie Sióstr Matki Bożej Miłosierdzia prowadzi formację duchową i apostolską.

ŚWIĘTO DZIĘKCZYNIENIA
CZYLI AMERYKAŃSKA SAGA
Jeśli się dobrze nad tym zastanowić, to większość historii wcale się nie zaczyna od początku. Toteż Amerykanie
wywodzą swoje korzenie, wcale nie od wcześniej założonej kolonii, Jamestown, tylko od przybycia tutaj Pielgrzymów z
"Mayflower".
Purytanie bezskutecznie usiłowali oczyścić anglikański kościół, ze znienawidzonych przez siebie, papistycznych
naleciałości, narażając się tylko na prześladowania. Na tajnej konwencji, która odbyła się w miejscowości Scrooby,
podjęto rezolucję o wyemigrowaniu do Zjednoczonych
Niderlandów, które cieszyły się opinią
tolerancyjnych.
Z pomocą pospieszyła Virginia Company, z
siedzibą w Londynie, namawiając
purytanów, na założenie nowej kolonii, w
Ameryce. W zamian za sfinansowanie
wyprawy, zobowiązali się oni do powołania
kościoła kongregacyjnego. Kompania
zastrzegła sobie także udział w zyskach
handlowych. I znowu, duchowe
przedsięwzięcie miało drugą, materialną stronę.
Przywódcą Pielgrzymów stał się William
Brewster.
Atlantyk wyjątkowo nie sprzyjał
wyprawie. Jesień to sezon huraganów, z
czego najwidoczniej, niezbyt doświadczeni
żeglarze, nie zdawali sobie sprawy.
Miotany falami statek, był zdany na łaskę
opatrzności. 66-dniowa podróż, upływała
pod znakiem walki z żywiołami, stając się
prawdziwą pielgrzymką. Wichura zniosła
"Mayflower" z kursu. Planowano bowiem
dotarcie, do ujścia Hudsonu i osiedlenie się w
żyznej dolinie. Wola boska, jak zapewne
powiadano, kazała im zarzucić kotwicę, na
samym koniuszku Cape Cod, w okolicach
dzisiejszego Provincetown. Miało to miejsce
11 listopada 1620 roku. Na pokładzie statku znajdowało się 102 osoby, w tym 34
dzieci.
20 grudnia koloniści, wylądowali w Plymouth, gdzie im się poszczęściło. Wolny od drzew i krzewów grunt,
położony nad źródłem, został opuszczony przez Indian, zdziesiątkowanych przez epidemię. Pozostała przy życiu garstka,
nie obawiało się białych, odnosząc się do nich z sympatią. Jeden z nich Samoset pojawił się w środku obozowiska, ze
słowami Welcome na ustach. Liznął on trochę angielszczyzny, od rybaków, poławiających dorsze. Największą pomoc
okazał osadnikom, Squanto. William Bradford, drugi gubernator Plimoth Plantation, jak brzmiała oryginalna nazwa,
uznał życzliwego i mądrego Indianina, za narzędzie boskiej opatrzności. I rzeczywiście, kolonia nie przetrwałaby roku,
bez daleko idącej pomocy. Nawet traktaty, w których zawarciu pomagał Squanto, obowiązywały przez półwiecze.
Pielgrzymi zaznali na własnej skórze, czym jest pionierska dola. Purytanie nie byli przygotowani do życia w głuszy, a w
dodatku trafili na wyjątkowo srogą zimę, toteż wiosny doczekało zaledwie 55 osób. Wśród nieustannych pogrzebów,
pochowano również pierwszego gubernatora Johna Carvera.
Osadnicy pobierali u Indian lekcje jak zastawiać sidła, łowić ryby, czy
uprawiać kukurydzę. Pierwsze i bardzo obfite zbiory składały się z żyta, jęczmienia,
grochu i kukurydzy. Wypadało się odwzajemnić Indianom za okazaną szlachetność.
pierwsze święto dziękczynienia zostało zaproszone całe plemię, pod wodzą
Massoyota. Dumni czerwonoskórzy nie przyszli z pustymi rękoma, przynosząc w darze
pięć saren, mnóstwo ryb i ostryg. Przy stołach, a może przy ogniskach, raczono się także
dzikim ptactwem, opiekanymi bulwami, prażoną kukurydzą i zbożowymi podpłomykami. Na
deser były jagody i żurawiny, a także frumenty, angielski rodzaj kutii.
Na
Takie właśnie były początki, bogatego w symbolikę Thanksgiving. W 1863 roku
Prezydent Lincoln nadał rangę święta państwowego, prywatnym obchodom i religijnej
uroczystości. Obrazuje ono zarówno trudne początki, jak i osiągnięcia uzyskane na obczyźnie.

ON CHURCH FIRES, HURRICANES, AND THE BUSINESS AT HAND

We had a fire in our church a few weeks ago. Scary. One of The deacons tipped me off to it a couple of days
after it happened, and I saw the yellow security tape blocking all of the church entranceways a day or two later as a repair
crew went about putting things right. Thank God they even got the chance. More specifically, thank the parish staff
and the pastor for containing the fire to one internal wall by their quick response. Apparently a candle somehow ignited
the wall in question, and when the blaze was discovered, everyone immediately did what they were supposed to do. After
a few Masses in the school gymnasium--itself completed only a few days prior--the church was once again open for
(spiritual) business come Sunday morning.
Physical buildings are not indestructible. They are subject to the ravages of time and neglect, or to ravages of a
more explosive nature. An errant candle flame took down a wall at our house of God. Ironically, an act of God took
down the house of God on Sanibel. And there's Jesus in today's Gospel text, even as the people around him speak of the
temple's beauty, declaring, "All that you see here--the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another
stone that will not be thrown down." About forty years later, the Roman general Titus, in claiming Jerusalem, made it so.
Still, according to an old English saying, the church is an anvil that has worn out many hammers. And the reason, of
course, goes far beyond the bricks and mortar.
Malachi speaks today speaks of a coming judgment when the wicked will be consumed by fire. Paul chides some
of the Thessalonians for thinking Christ's return is so imminent that they don't have to work for a living anymore; that all
they have to do is sit back and wait for their King to come and take them away in some cosmic Calgon moment. Jesus
himself counsels us to persevere. As disciples, we believe that the end is coming, but nobody knows when. Could be today.
Could be millenniums from now. The task for each of us is to be vigilant with the time we've been given. The task
for each of us is to keep going about the spiritual business at hand. The task for each of us is to be church for one another.
Always. With or without the bricks and mortar.

BAPTISM:
For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first
child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each
month at 7:00 PM in the Convent, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of
each month at 7:30 PM in the Church. Following registration, the
sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Sunday
each month at 1:45 PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the
12:30 PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on
the first Sunday of the month at 1:45 PM and on the third Sunday of
the month at the 3:00 PM Mass. Please call the rectory to register at
