4. Guidelines for Representations of Designs Introduction Designs can be two-dimensional or three-dimensional and each design should be shown graphically in representations. You may wish to lodge several different views of your design in order to fully and accurately show the design. Mode of Representations 1. The representations of your design must be either in the form of photographs or drawings which should be visually clear, of good quality and be suitable for reproduction. 2. If your representations consist of photographs, the photographs should be clear original prints. Photocopies of photographs or scanned photocopies of the same are not acceptable as these may be poorly reproduced and would not show the details of your design. If you are manually filing your application, the photographs you submit should be mounted on good quality A4 size paper. 3. All photographs should be of matte finish and should show the article against a plain contrasting background. Any extraneous articles that are not intended to form part of the design must be excluded. 4. If your representations consist of drawings, your drawings must be accurately drawn on good quality A4 sized white and the drawings must be of welldefined, even black lines. Rough-hand sketches are not acceptable. 5. For applications filed online, the image files must be in JPEG format only. The image file name should not contain any spaces or special characters. [! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) - +] Views of Representations 1. The “best” visual angle of the design is usually the perspective view. This should be submitted as the Annex A on the application form. The view submitted as the Annex A will be the view that is published in the Designs Journal. 2. The drawings or photographs should contain a sufficient number of views to completely disclose the appearance of the claimed design, for example, front, rear, right and left sides, top and bottom views. 3. Cross section views of your design should not be submitted unless it is to clearly show the appearance and shape of three-dimensional designs. iii
Number of Views 1. The application may only contain a maximum of 10 different views of the design. Please ensure that each view is presented on individual sheets of A4 sized paper. Similarly for applications filed online, each view is to be submitted as 1 image file. (Hence, only 10 images files may be uploaded). 2. The registry will accept the views in the consecutive order in which they are numbered; or if the views are not numbered, in the consecutive order that they are provided by the applicant. Where more than 10 views are provided, the Registry will disregard the additional views lodged. 3. If the application is for a design which is to be applied to a set of articles, the Annex A should show the design as applied to all the articles in the set. For example, if the application is for a set of jewellery consisting of a pendant, a ring and a bangle, these 3 items must be shown within the Annex A. Dimensions of Views 1. The dimensions for each of the views of the design should not exceed 13 by 15 centimeters, and should not be smaller than 3 by 3 centimeters. 2. In the case of a set of articles, where the Annex A shows all the articles, the dimension of this Annex A should also not exceed 13 by 15 centimeters. 3. For applications filed online, the maximum file size of all the images submitted should not exceed 1 MB. As a general guide, for the best possible display of images in the eDesigns online search system, the recommended scanning resolution should be as follows: (i) Drawings or line drawings should be at least 200dpi, and (ii) Photographs should be at least 150dpi Labelling the Views 1. You may wish to label the views numerically or include terms such as “Perspective view” or “View of one side”. 2. The labels however should not include dimensions, wordings that describe all or parts of the design, or trade mark material. 3. If you wish to protect a design which only applies to a part or parts of an article, you must clearly identify the part or parts of the article in solid lines. The parts for which protection is not claimed may be indicated by means of dotted or broken lines. iv
