WELCOME TO NIOS
Dear learner,
I welcome you and congratulate you for choosing NIOS as your preferred option for continuing your
studies. You will find that NIOS is an institution with a difference.
It is an open school whose
philosophy encourages flexibility and freedom in learning. More than 15 lakhs students have already
chosen NIOS for pursuing their Secondary, Senior Secondary and Vocational courses. You too have
become a part of the largest Open Schooling System in the World.
I would like to inform you that NIOS is an organization under the Government of India, Ministry of HRD.
It has been vested with the authority to enroll, examine and certify students up to pre-degree level. It
has the same standard and equivalence as any other National/ State level Board. Students have joined
Colleges and professional institutions after completing their studies from NIOS.
NIOS is different from the formal schooling system as it is an Open and Distance Learning (ODL)
system which develops its own curriculum, self learning material and media support programmes
utilizing the expertise of faculty from various Academic & Vocational education institutions/Organisations.
NIOS has taken several steps to ensure that the learner is at the centre of all programmes. You will note that NIOS offers many
subjects in different mediums. You have the freedom to choose your subjects, pace and place of learning. This Prospectus provides you
details of study, choice of subjects, credit transfers from other Boards, credit accumulation, mode of study, media support, flexibilities in
examination and certification, etc. which is being offered by NIOS to you.
NIOS has developed several means and strategies to facilitate learning. During the course of study, you can check your progress
through the Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs) which help to develop regular study habits, and be sincere and disciplined in your
studies. Submission of one TMA out of three TMAs in each subject of Secondary and Senior Secondary is mandatory for you. I advise
you to avail the facilities being provided by NIOS through its Study Centres (called as Accredited Institutions(AIs) such as PCP, TMAs
and media support .
We at NIOS strive for continous innovations and improvements in serving our learners. One of the recent major innovations of
NIOS is the On-line Admissions which is in addition to the usual procedure of admission through the Accredited Institutions(AIs).
From the Session 2009-10, NIOS has started On-line admission throughout the year (24×7). This Online Admission under NIOS Online
Project (Ni-On) is an attempt by NIOS to use technology to reach you directly and also make our system more transparent and
error free. I am pleased to inform you that in recognition of NIOS’s effort for the use of technology in the field of ODL, the Ni-On
Project has been awarded the prestigious National Award for e-Governance 2008-09 for Excellence in Government Process Reengineering
(SILVER) in Feb., 2009 by the Government of India, Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances &
Department of Information Technology. We encourage our learners to access NIOS-admission system through On-line mode as it
offers numerous advantages over, admissions through Study Centre i.e. it provides a direct link of NIOS with the learner, whose study
material is despatched directly to him. Learners of On-line system are provided direct services through LSC of NIOS for the providing
prompt & direct support.
As a part of building upon openness, NIOS offers the facility of On Demand Examination System(ODES) at Secondary and Senior
Secondary level. ODES at Senior Secondary level is available in the subjects of Maths, Physics, Business Studies, Hindi, Political Science
and Home Science. This is in addition to the two regular public examinations held in every academic session.
From this session, NIOS has made several changes in its schedules – around the year admission has been opened, please ensure that
you book your seat in time for any of the examinations.
NIOS has further expanded the Ni-On Project and set up a user friendly, convenient Learner Support Centre(LSC) which has both an
IVRS and human executive support. The LSC will be the single window to sort out your grievances pertaining to any aspect of NIOS’s
functioning. I request you to read this Prospectus in detail & fill your application form carefully.
