Accomplishments (continued)<br />
• The GIS team working with the Horticulture staff created <strong>and</strong> posted an interactive map<br />
of the War Memorial Rose Garden on the SSPR website.<br />
• The Forestry <strong>and</strong> Horticulture Teams completed the renovation of the native garden at the<br />
Carson Nature Center vastly improving the beauty <strong>and</strong> interpretive value of this highly<br />
visible site.<br />
• The Carson Nature Center’s Native Garden was re-established to be instructive for home<br />
l<strong>and</strong>scapes along with the establishment of an outdoor presentation with native sod by the<br />
Carson Nature Center classroom.<br />
• A river access pier <strong>and</strong> lake h<strong>and</strong>icap fishing pier were built in <strong>South</strong> Platte Park.<br />
• <strong>South</strong> Platte Park’s operations <strong>and</strong> the Carson Nature Center were reorganized under one<br />
division <strong>and</strong> one supervisor for cost savings <strong>and</strong> efficiency improvements.<br />
• Revenues exceeded projections for both Nature <strong>and</strong> Outdoor <strong>Recreation</strong> programming<br />
through mid-year. It is anticipated that revenues will exceed projects for both Nature <strong>and</strong><br />
Outdoor programs by the end of the year.<br />
• <strong>South</strong> Platte Park has a Facebook following of over nine hundred fifty people.<br />
• <strong>South</strong> Platte Park’s public news <strong>and</strong> volunteer updates have gone to an electronic<br />
newsletter format.<br />
• The Nature Center Program successfully led a safe <strong>and</strong> financially successful trip to<br />
Panama.<br />
• The Outdoor <strong>Recreation</strong> Program utilized in-house archery instruction during 2011 which<br />
resulted in a savings of $750 over contracting the classes.<br />
• Trips <strong>and</strong> Tours programs continue to generate good participation interest <strong>and</strong> revenue<br />
including a new Utah hiking trip in the spring of 2011.<br />
• A fence was installed on both sides of the Easter underpass at the Big Dry Creek Trail to<br />
prevent accidents at the drop off area.<br />
• Perennial ruts <strong>and</strong> muddy conditions at the Foxridge Trail at Foxridge Park were<br />
corrected by exp<strong>and</strong>ing the entryway to the trail by utilizing new asphalt.<br />
• Athletic field renovations were performed on thirty-eight fields including nearly seventynine<br />
thous<strong>and</strong> square feet of sod <strong>and</strong> over four thous<strong>and</strong> pounds of seed.<br />
• Dugouts were improved <strong>and</strong> enlarged at the baseball field at Gallup Park.<br />
• Infields on baseball fields were improved with new soil at Gallup, Bowles, Prairie Sky,<br />
Puma <strong>and</strong> Writers Vista.<br />
• Irrigation crews repaired forty-three main breaks, replaced fourteen backflow devices due<br />
to theft or replacement, upgraded seven irrigation system controllers, performed an inhouse<br />
upgrade to the irrigation system at TrailMark <strong>and</strong> replaced the booster pump at<br />
Taylor Park.<br />
• The Disc Golf at the David A. Lorenz Regional Park was re-designed to accommodate<br />
the construction of the new Service Center. This included relocating five tee pads <strong>and</strong><br />
eight baskets.<br />
