partly <strong>in</strong> t?a? channels, especially where <strong>the</strong>se have lost <strong>the</strong>ir role as<br />
distributaries of ehh currents £ran <strong>the</strong> estuary.<br />
It is to be expected that <strong>the</strong>se processes will cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>in</strong> fhe future<br />
at a reduq rate, until a new equilibrium has been established. The<br />
longshore bare, stagnat<strong>in</strong>g at a height level of araund mean sea-lwel<br />
(NAP), will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to stretch <strong>in</strong> a direction parallel to <strong>the</strong> coast,<br />
at <strong>the</strong> same time mov<strong>in</strong>g fur<strong>the</strong>r landward (Kohsiek, et al. 1989).<br />

3.3 Category Grevel<strong>in</strong>gen<br />
After constructian of <strong>the</strong> Grevel<strong>in</strong>getl Dam (1965) and <strong>the</strong> Brouwers Dam<br />
(1971). <strong>the</strong> G?3?Tellngen bas<strong>in</strong> mat be charracterized a a stagnaat<br />
saltwater bas<strong>in</strong>, without any tidal ot flwiel <strong>in</strong>fluence. Waves are <strong>the</strong><br />
only ge~morphologically active drfv<strong>in</strong>g force that has been left.<br />
Theoretically changes of such nature will <strong>in</strong>duce erosion of <strong>the</strong> sandy<br />
shoals and mudflats, and sedimntation of tbe ehannels (conform<br />
Fig. &B). DevelDpmOnts over <strong>the</strong> last 20 years broadly canfirm this.
