In this paper (Section 2) first <strong>the</strong> historic evolution of <strong>the</strong> tidal<br />

landscape is analysed, resultbg <strong>in</strong> some 'hypo<strong>the</strong>ses' M general<br />

response mecbnism to chaqges <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> natural driv<strong>in</strong>g forces. !hen<br />

(Section S) <strong>the</strong> major changes of <strong>the</strong> tidal landscape <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> respective<br />

bas<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> Dutch <strong>Delta</strong> area over <strong>the</strong> last decadee are broadly<br />

reviewed. The observed phenomena are confronted with <strong>the</strong> general<br />

'hypo<strong>the</strong>ses' of Section 2 and discussed <strong>in</strong> relation to <strong>the</strong> specific<br />

shift <strong>in</strong> natural driviog forces. Flnatly a short outlook on future<br />

developments is given.<br />

2 EVOLUTION OF THE TIDAL LANDSGAEE DURmG RISTORiC TINES<br />

2.1 Kel<strong>in</strong>ium and Oosterschalde<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g Roman times <strong>the</strong> coastl<strong>in</strong>e of <strong>the</strong> South-Vest Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands only<br />

showed two ma<strong>in</strong> tidal <strong>in</strong>lets (Fig. 1).<br />

At that time <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rnmost <strong>in</strong>let, known <strong>in</strong> Roman writ<strong>in</strong>gs as<br />

Ael<strong>in</strong>ium, was <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> distributary of <strong>the</strong> rivers Rh<strong>in</strong>e and Ueuse, and<br />

partly of <strong>the</strong> river Scheldt (Zagwljn. 1987). Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> next centuries<br />

<strong>the</strong> importance & this estuary cont<strong>in</strong>ually dim<strong>in</strong>ished, <strong>in</strong> favout of <strong>the</strong><br />

development cf <strong>the</strong> sarly Har<strong>in</strong>gvliet, GreveBgen and Onsterschelde<br />

estuaries.<br />
