<strong>Meals</strong> <strong>from</strong> Share Our Strength and the Colorado No<br />

Kid Hungry Campaign<br />

Purpose:<br />

This application is for fund<strong>in</strong>g <strong>from</strong> Share Our Strength and the Colorado No Kid Hungry<br />

Campaign to help organizations expand access to and participation <strong>in</strong> USDA-supported summer<br />

<strong>Application</strong> deadl<strong>in</strong>es: May 3, 2013 and May 31, 2013<br />

If funds are still available after this deadl<strong>in</strong>e, we may open the application period aga<strong>in</strong> with a<br />

f<strong>in</strong>al deadl<strong>in</strong>e around the end of May. Please feel free to contact Victoria Treski (contact<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation below) if your organization might have special circumstances that would prevent<br />

you <strong>from</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g this May 3 deadl<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Applicant Eligibility:<br />

Apply<strong>in</strong>g organization must be:<br />

• A 501c3 nonprofit organization currently <strong>in</strong> good stand<strong>in</strong>g, and/or other organization<br />

recognized by the IRS as eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions<br />

• An SFSP or NSLP summer meal program sponsor for summer 2013. You must have<br />

already started the SFSP application process with your state agency at the time you<br />

submit your grant application. We will accept grant applications <strong>from</strong> organizations that<br />

have started the process and/or are await<strong>in</strong>g approval <strong>from</strong> your state agency; however<br />

grants will only be awarded to organizations that are approved as program sponsors.<br />

Program Eligibility:<br />

The goal of this program is to <strong>in</strong>crease the number of children participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> SFSP/NSLP<br />

summer meals programs. With that goal <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, the follow<strong>in</strong>g types of requests will receive top<br />

consideration for fund<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

• Experienced sponsors add<strong>in</strong>g sites <strong>in</strong> underserved areas<br />

• Experienced sponsors notably <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g days of service or add<strong>in</strong>g<br />

breakfast/lunch/supper<br />

• New sponsors <strong>in</strong> unserved/underserved area with strong organizational <strong>in</strong>frastructure and<br />

capacity and opportunity to reach sizable population relative to their area


• Sponsors with open sites that articulate clearly thought out plans for <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

participation (either new sponsors, or return<strong>in</strong>g sponsors who plan for participation<br />

<strong>in</strong>creases while reta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the same number of sites) through methods such as<br />

programm<strong>in</strong>g, adult meals, outreach, transportation, etc.<br />

• Requests for <strong>in</strong>frastructure/equipment that can support organizations <strong>in</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g both<br />

afterschool and summer programs.<br />

Amount of Request and Eligible Uses of <strong>Grant</strong> Funds:<br />

• Fund<strong>in</strong>g may be used for equipment, personnel, transportation, and other non-food<br />

program expenses. As a general rule we do not provide fund<strong>in</strong>g for the cost of food.When<br />

possible, we prefer to fund expenses that will benefit your program beyond summer<br />

2013. Fund<strong>in</strong>g for budget items that will need fund<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong> next year (for example,<br />

staff, fuel, etc.) should not exceed 50% of your total request, and should <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation about how you plan to fund that item next year without the grant.<br />

• The average grant award will be $2,500. Organizations with potential for significant<br />

expansion and with clearly described plans for achiev<strong>in</strong>g their goals will be most likely to<br />

receive higher than the average grant amount.<br />

Report<strong>in</strong>g Requirements:<br />

In fall 2013 you will be asked to provide:<br />

• A detailed report on use of funds<br />

• <strong>Participation</strong> numbers (similar to <strong>in</strong>formation that is already required for sponsors to<br />

report to Colorado Department of Education)<br />

• Observations on the successes and challenges of your program over the course of the<br />

summer<br />

• Organizations that do not submit a report will be <strong>in</strong>eligible to receive future grants <strong>from</strong><br />

Share Our Strength<br />

Selection Process:<br />

• <strong>Grant</strong> applications will be evaluated based on:<br />

- Adherence to Eligibility and Requirements guidel<strong>in</strong>es<br />

- Ability to reach high-need populations and/or areas under served by summer meals<br />

programs<br />

- Growth potential for summer meals participation<br />

-Information provided <strong>in</strong> proposal describes an understand<strong>in</strong>g of the specific needs <strong>in</strong><br />

your community, and a well-thought out plan for your summer program<br />

-Funds requested are connected to the needs and plan presented <strong>in</strong> the proposal<br />

• Applicants will be notified of grant status by May 22, 2013 for the first round, and June<br />

14 th for the second round.


• <strong>Grant</strong> payments will be issued after we have confirmed that you have been approved as<br />

an SFSP/ NSLP summer meals sponsor by your state agency, and after we receive your<br />

signed grant agreement letter.<br />
