A significant overall progress in literacy is evident when the youth literacy rate is compared to the adult literacy rate (Map 3.7). However; there are substantial spatial differences in the progress of literacy across the country. Data at the upazila level shows that the progress in literacy is quite substantial (youth literacy is higher than the adult literacy by 24 percentage points or more), in 242 upazilas out of a total of 483 upazilas and the progress is moderate in 199 upazilas (Figure 3.3). Spatially, the western part of the country demonstrates higher progress than the East in terms of literacy - see progress in literacy by upazila in Map 3.7.
