SENSORY ORGANS<br />

Preparations for topical treatment of diseases in the sensory organs, i.e. the eyes and<br />

the ears, are classified in this group. The therapeutic main groups are classified as<br />

ophthalmologicals, group QS01, and otologicals, group QS02. Preparations used to<br />

treat both eye and ear diseases are classified in group QS03.<br />

A formulation approved both for use in the eye/ear is classified in S03, while<br />

formulations only licensed for use in the eye or the ear are classified in S01 and<br />

S02, respectively.<br />

The therapeutic subgroups include, for example, antiinfectives, antiinflammatory<br />

agents, miotics, mydriatics, antiglaucoma preparations, surgical aids (for eyes) and<br />

local anesthetics. Some of the preparations classified as surgical aids, e.g.<br />

QS01KA - Viscoelastic substances, might also be classified as medical devices.<br />

Systemic preparations for treatment of glaucoma is classified in QS01E.<br />

OPHTHALMOLOGICALS<br />

Small amounts of antiseptics in eye products do not influence the classification.<br />

ANTIINFECTIVES<br />

Plain and combined antiinfective preparations for ophthalmological use should be<br />

classified in this group.<br />

Combinations with corticosteroids are classified in QS01CA - Corticosteroids and<br />

antiinfectives in combination.<br />

QS01AA<br />

Antibiotics<br />

Combinations of different antibiotics (including sulfonamides) are assigned to a<br />

separate 5th level group: QS01AA30.<br />

Combinations with other drugs (e.g. sympathomimetics) are assigned to a separate<br />

5th level group: QS01AA20.<br />

Combinations with antiinflammatory agents are classified in group<br />

QS01C - Antiinflammatory agents and antiinfectives in combination.<br />

Combinations with antibiotics are classified in QS01AA - Antibiotics.<br />
