Floor Growing Recommendations—<strong>Alternative</strong> Systems<br />
It is essential to grow the birds on the floor when they will be<br />
housed in floor systems for the laying period. Ensure that the<br />
feed and water systems in the growing and laying facilities are<br />
compatible. Ideally, the growing house should have elevated<br />
bird walkways with feed and water stations. Flocks housed in<br />
all-slat houses during lay should also be grown on slat or wire<br />
floors.<br />
Chicks started on the floor should be transferred from the<br />
transport boxes to the litter under the water lines or near<br />
drinkers to encourage drinking. To make it easier for the chicks<br />
to drink, use supplemental drinkers in addition to the automatic<br />
drinkers. The supplemental drinkers should be used for the fi rst<br />
10 to 14 days and can also be used for administering the fi rst<br />
vaccination if given in the water. When used, gradually move<br />
supplemental feeders and drinkers towards the permanent<br />
feeders and drinkers in the room to train the chicks to find the<br />
permanent feeders and waterers.<br />
Birds should be grown in housing that allows adjustment to<br />
the lighting program and the light intensity. It is important to<br />
provide floor-grown birds with enough light intensity to allow<br />
them to navigate their environment. A light intensity of 20 to 30<br />
lux (2 to 3 foot-candles) should be used during the first week of<br />
age, dropping down to 15 lux (1.5 foot-candles) by week 4 and<br />
remaining at the level until week 15 of age. At week 15 of age,<br />
gradually increase the light intensity, reaching 20 to 30 lux (2<br />
to 3 foot-candles) by the time the pullets are transferred to the<br />
layer house. Birds moving into open-sided housing should have<br />
higher light intensities of 30 to 40 lux (3 to 4 foot-candles) at the<br />
time of housing.<br />
Birds are very sensitive to extremes of relative humidity. A<br />
relative humidity below 30% will cause increased agitation of<br />
the chicks and may cause aggressive behavior. Conversely,<br />
excessive moisture may cause wet litter conditions, associated<br />
with high ammonia concentrations, poor air quality, enteric<br />
diseases, and respiratory problems. Ideally, the relative<br />
humidity should be between 40 and 60%. Humidity control<br />
becomes increasingly important when warm-room brooding in<br />
cold climates. To increase the relative humidity, water can be<br />
sprayed on the walk ways or fl oors. Humidity will normally be<br />
lowered to 30 to 40% by the end of the growing period.<br />

Ambient Temperature and Relative Humidity<br />
Observing the chicks will tell you whether or not the<br />
temperature is correct. If they are too cool, they will huddle (or<br />
crowd) near the heat source. If they are too warm, they will<br />
spread out away from the heat source. If there are drafts, they<br />
will huddle in groups to get away from the spot where the cool<br />
air enters the heated area. Comfortable chicks will spread out<br />
uniformly, without huddling, throughout the brooding area. Look<br />
for signs of overheating (panting and drowsiness) or chilling<br />
(huddling and loud chirping) and make appropriate adjustments.<br />
Water Consumption for Pullets and<br />
Layers<br />
Drinking Water<br />
Water is the most important nutrient and good-quality water<br />
must be available to the birds at all times. Only in special cases<br />
(e.g., prior to vaccine delivery through the drinking water),<br />
should drinking water be restricted, and then only for a short<br />
time and under careful monitoring.<br />
Monitoring Drinking Water Intake<br />
Water and feed consumption are directly related—when birds<br />
drink less water, they consume less feed, and production<br />
quickly declines accordingly. As a general rule, healthy adult<br />
birds will consume twice as much water as feed, although the<br />
ratio increases during periods of warm weather. Installation and<br />
use of water meters in each house or barn are recommended<br />
to monitor the fl ock’s water intake on a daily basis. Such daily<br />
water-intake records can be used as an early warning of<br />
problems in the fl ock.<br />

Nest Training<br />
Confine the pullets to the slats (where the water and feeder<br />
lines are) at housing and allow the pullets access to the nests<br />
at housing. Walk the birds several times daily, particularly in<br />
the morning, to ensure the birds are finding feed and water. To<br />
reduce stress and ensure a trouble-free transfer, water-soluble<br />
vitamins, probiotics, and vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can be<br />
added to the drinking water 3 days before and 3 days after the<br />
transfer.<br />
Open a few of the nest box curtains to encourage nest<br />
exploration in young laying flocks. Nest lights can be used<br />
to train birds to explore the nests and should be turned on<br />
for 2 hours per day, starting 1 hour before the house lights<br />
are turned on and remain on for 1 hour after the house lights<br />
have been turned on. This will help prevent overcrowding and<br />
smothering inside the nests. False walls that are 1–2 m in<br />
length every 12 m along the line of and perpendicular to the<br />
nest boxes will reduce nest overcrowding.<br />
Train the pullets to use the nests by frequent walks through<br />
the house in the mornings for the first 8 weeks after the birds<br />
are placed in the laying house. Use of electric deterrent wires<br />
on the slats around the house perimeter will help discourage<br />
egg laying in corners or near the walls. Electric deterrent wires<br />
must be turned on as soon as the birds are housed. Place<br />
the electric deterrent wires 5 cm away from the wall or the<br />
house and about 10 cm above the fl oor. Avoid using an electric<br />
wire over water and feed lines as this practice increases<br />
nervousness among the birds. Instead, the use of solid perches<br />
above water and feed lines is preferred.<br />
Floor Systems <strong>Management</strong><br />
The <strong>Hy</strong>-<strong>Line</strong> <strong>Brown</strong> can be used successfully in floor systems<br />
due to their good livability and nest behavior when the birds<br />
have been appropriately socialized. It is important to provide<br />
the birds with the best possible floor environment to achieve<br />
the performance potential of the <strong>Hy</strong>-<strong>Line</strong> <strong>Brown</strong>. It is essential<br />
to grow the birds on the floor when they will be housed in fl oor<br />
systems for the laying period.<br />
Check the lighting program and intensity and synchronize with<br />
the growing house. The <strong>Hy</strong>-<strong>Line</strong> <strong>Brown</strong> will need bright light<br />
and it is important not to have any shadows in the house. Dark<br />
areas outside the nests will encourage floor eggs.<br />
The litter area in layer houses should not be more than 60 cm<br />
(24 in) below the slat area. Position lights to eliminate shadows<br />
on the litter below the slat area. Position lights to provide the<br />
brightest light intensity over the litter or resting areas and the<br />
lowest light intensity at the front of the nest boxes. Flocks<br />
housed in all-slat houses should also be grown on slat or wire<br />
floors.<br />
Socialization of Birds<br />
It is important to socialize the birds raised on the floor to<br />
humans by walking through the house daily. It is recommended<br />
that the birds be walked 4 times per day with a 2-hour interval<br />
between walkings. This would give the birds time to relax and<br />
settle between walkings. Brighten the house and walk briskly<br />
through the house to improve the process of socialization.<br />

Lighting Programs<br />
Egg production is very closely related to the changes in day<br />
length. Body weight gain in the growing period, egg numbers,<br />
egg size, livability, and total profitability can be favorably<br />
influenced by a proper lighting program.<br />
When open-type houses which allow natural daylight to affect<br />
the flock are used, the lighting program must be planned in<br />
conjunction with changes in the natural day length. Because<br />
no two places have the same sunrise-sunset times yearround,<br />
custom lighting programs for any location worldwide are<br />
available.<br />

Controlling Egg Weight<br />
It is recommended to closely monitor feed intake, body<br />
condition (through body weight and/or body scoring/fatpad<br />
development), and egg weight of each flock and make<br />
nutritional changes as needed to ensure optimal production<br />
rate and egg weight. If smaller eggs are desired, the egg weight<br />
should be controlled even more aggressively at an early age.<br />
Egg-weight control is achieved through a combination of<br />
limiting amino acid consumption and ensuring that the feed<br />
intake is not too high (achieved through control of the ambient<br />
temperature). To avoid excessively large eggs later in lay, use<br />
the peaking and second layer feeding phase diets for less time<br />
than shown in the Performance Standards Manual. This will<br />
provide a reduced level of added fat or oil, as well as amino<br />
acid contents, to control egg weight.<br />
Control of ambient house temperature<br />
At housing, an ambient temperature of 21 to 23˚C is desired.<br />
Increase the house temperature about 1˚C every 2 weeks until<br />
reaching a house temperature of 26 to 27˚C assuming the<br />
ventilation systems are able to maintain adequate air quality at<br />
these temperatures). Lower (colder) house temperatures will<br />
lead to greater feed intakes and may be counterproductive to<br />
egg-weight control, as well as optimal feed efficiency and adult<br />
hen body weights.<br />
Perches<br />
Perches provide a signifi cant improvement to the growing<br />
and laying house environment. In grow, they allow birds to<br />
fully develop their leg and flight muscles to develop jumping<br />
behavior. This will be important to develop good nesting<br />
behavior and if the laying hens are later housed in aviaries. In<br />
addition, perches reduce the social stress by providing safe<br />
resting sites. In part because of the improvement in social<br />
pressure, perches can improve feed and water consumption,<br />
with resulting effects on body weight gain, body weight<br />
uniformity, and egg production. Perches also increase the<br />
effective space in the house, and reduce piling which is a<br />
common problem in fl ocks without access to perches. Perches<br />
also help improve the social environment as mentioned above<br />
and signifi cantly reduce occurences of eggs laid outside the<br />
nests (i.e., “floor eggs”).<br />
The dimensions for A-frame perches are shown in the drawing<br />
to the right. If individual perches are placed too close to the<br />
fl oor, birds cannot escape from social-stress situations. Perches<br />
above the feed or water lines, perches extending from the wall<br />
(i.e., half an A-frame), or other perch designs can also be used.<br />
The perch length depends on bird density (see table). If space<br />
allows, place perches on slats to maintain good litter conditions.<br />

The width (or diameter) of each perch should be 2.5 cm or wider to allow<br />
for a comfortable grip. The length of all perches in the house depends in<br />
part on bird density.<br />
