Snapshots of a memorable honeymoon for
Mr. Mohan and his wife in Koh Samui
The highlights of Mr. Susanto’s favourite vacation
with QVI Club
Bangkok & Phuket, Thailand
This trip was sweet and pleasantly
different for us. Upon our arrival in
Thailand, we got acquainted with the
friendly and hospitable locals.
Hotel Elegance Suites has facilities like
sauna, pool, massage and gym and it is
close to Robinson’s, MacDonald’s and
money changers. A memorable moment
for us was the visit to the Open Safari
Zoo in Bangkok where they played
Indian and Iranian songs to welcome
the visitors!
Upon our arrival at Patong Tower
in Phuket, the QVI representative
welcomed us warmly and provided
useful information like map of the island,
location for supermarket, spas and the
beach. Our city tour program included
transport from the hotel, a tour guide,
a visit to in Phuket highlands, animal
shows, visits to Buddha temples and a
jewelry shop. The fantastic weather and
charming calm and tranquility in Phuket
are definitely also worth a mention.
Finally, we would like to suggest for
families to utilise the QVI membership
packages. Do not be deterred by
language difficulty. Although many Thais
do not speak much English, their warm
and friendly nature will make up for any
communication gap.
Mr. Abdullah
On June 2007, my mom, my brother and I
went to Club Intrawest – Blue Mountain
in Ontario, Canada. The trip took about 2
hours from my house but it was worth it.
I really liked this resort. It has 2 swimming
pools, BBQ grill, a gym room for my
brother, a hammock, and free internet!
YES, free internet! I played my Warcraft
game online on my laptop at no charge
during my stay there.
We have been to many resorts using my
parents’ QVI membership. I liked them
all but I liked this one the most because it
was close to restaurants, golf course, ski
hill, shopping centres, a theatre, Wasaga
beach and of course, my favourite, it has
FREE INTERNET!
My family really enjoy their vacations
using QVI membership. They love it so
much that our car plate says “QVI CLUB.”
Thank you so much QVI for making my
vacation with my family memorable and
thank you mom and dad. When I grow up
and have my own money, I will buy one
QVI for myself.
Mr. Alex Susanto
Club Intrawest – Blue Mountain

As unique as its name, Koh Samui
offered us great adventures and exciting
moments throughout our one week stay
on the island. We checked into a beautiful
resort where we were greeted with warm
and friendly service.
We took the Island Safari City Tour, where
we caught the monkey and elephant
show, went on an elephant trekking ride,
visited the Khunaram temple (which is
famous for its mummy monk) and the Big
Buddha temple.
We made sure we didn’t miss the Sea Safari
Tour which set off from Nathon pier to the
Ang Thong National Marine Park. On Mae
Ko Island, we climbed to an amazing
viewpoint overlooking the Green Lagoon
and some breathtaking scenery of the
island. After a delicious buffet lunch, we
explored the ancient limestone cave at
Tai Phow Island and went snorkeling.
On our final day, we had the wonderful
opportunity to meet the General Manager
of Prana Resort & Spa (QVI), Mr. Simon
Illingworth, who shared details with us
on the development of the resort. We
truly believe it is going to be one of the
most prestigious and spectacular places
in Koh Samui.
As for us, Koh Samui was indeed a perfect
location for our honeymoon! A million
thanks to QVI Club for providing us with
such a lovely holiday experience!
BOARDING PASS
TRAVEL GUIDE
Doing your part as an Eco Chic Traveler
Vacationing with
a Conscience
With global warming and environmental issues plaguing
our earth, we can all do our part to minimise our carbon
footprint on Mother Nature. If you have already started
doing your part to recycle at home and in the office,
why not take it a step further and look to conserve the
environment while you go on vacation?
Here are some simple things any traveller can do
to make a difference when on a holiday.

C Electronic transactions waste less paper. Opt to go paperless
like buying e-ticket for airline travel and saving your flight
itineraries in your PDAs, Smart Phones, or Blackberries.
Request for paperless check ins/outs.
C For shorter trips, take the trains instead of flying - especially in
Europe or places where the train service is fast and frequent.
C Start appreciating walking tours and walk
where you can. You’ll burn some calories
while at it, and who knows, you might
discover a new shopping spot, java joint or
juice bar on your trek.
C Try to make use of public buses or transit systems when
available. It will give you a chance to mingle with locals and
finally make use of the electronic translator you purchased.
C Support the use of hybrid vehicles, or transportation powered
by natural gas.
C Take photos with a digital
camera. Disposable cameras
are very wasteful.
C Reuse your sheets and towels instead of having them
changed every day. You’ll save on tips as well.
C
When out in nature, leave only your footprints and nothing
else. Clean up any debris and never, ever litter. Basically,
leave the area just like they were before you arrived.
C
C
Keep your showers short and turn the water off while
brushing, shampooing or soaping. Save water!
When you leave the room, turn off the air conditioning, heat,
television, lights or any other electric devices.
C
C
Be wary of eco tours that involve the harm of animals,
especially those on the endangered species list. Support only
organizations that are certified cruelty-free.
Support conservation programs.
C
C
Carry a recyclable bag with you in which to carry dirty
laundry home.
Leave the little bottles of amenities you love in the
guestroom, if unopened. Is it really necessary to have a
collection of those?
C Rather than buying small size toothpaste tubes, squeeze
some toothpaste into a clean contact lens cases, lens
cleaning capsules, or reusable containers. These are also
handy for carrying salves or pills.

C If the hotel provides complimentary newspapers, pass yours
on to someone else, or leave it in the lobby for another reader.
Ask the hotel to see that it’s recycled.
C
Be sure to turn off exercise equipment, sauna, steam room,
whirlpool, jacuzzi or court lights when you’re through.
C Pick up at least one piece of litter
every day – especially at national
tourist locations.
C Take only the brochures or maps necessary. Return others
to the brochure stand. Share maps with travel mates
and family.
C
Shopping locally at your travel destinations does aid in
generating the economy. However, avoid purchasing
endangered species products such as tortoise shell, ivory,
animal skins or feathers.

Big Buddha Temple at Wat Phrai Yai. This is one of the Koh
Samui’s most famous landmarks and is visible from the resort
and from several kilometres away.
From Big Buddha Beach, it takes about 15-minute drive to the
bustling, vibrant and action-packed centre of Chaweng Beach.
Taxi transportation is available on the island. Although the use
of meters has improved recently, tourists are always advised to
try to use taxis that display `Taxi-Meter”. Make sure you ask the
driver to use the meter before you set off. If not, settle on a price
before you start.
Another fun way of getting around is by “Songtaew” or “Thai
pickup bus”, which is very inexpensive. The Songtaew drive a
circular route looking for fares - so you will see a cosmopolitan
mixture of different views and can meet some interesting tourists
and Thai local people as they get on and off the Songtaew.
Climate
Koh Samui has a pleasant climate all year round with a
temperature of 25 - 34 degrees Celsius.
The island has three official seasons:
• Warm and dry season from February till August;
• Rainy season from the end of September till December;
• Cool season which extends from October till January.
When is the best time to visit Koh Samui
The best time would be around January and February, the cool
season of the year. March to June are the hottest months, with
temperature ranging from 32 - 40 degrees.
The rainy season starts from September to mid December.
Although it is still sunny, downpours do become more frequent
as the year comes to a close. Koh Samui tends to be a little
less hectic and the shopkeepers are prepared to barter to a
good price.
What can I do there?
A plethora and varied range of activities can be sought from
Samui to satisfy the desires and wants of every holidaymaker.
Go island hopping, snorkelling or diving, or stay awhile on one of
the islands to enjoy and relax with what you have.
Diving
The underwater world of Koh Samui & Koh Tao beholds a vast
array of wonderful and unique marine creatures from the smallest
invertebrate through to giant sperm whales. Explore brilliantlycoloured
coral reefs and be dazzled by fish of a thousand hues.
Expect close encounters with giant barracuda, manta rays, sea
cows and even sharks! Whether you are a beginner or an expert,
there are a number of dive schools on the island that Prana
Resorts and Spa can recommend to you. We can even organise
one on one lessons if you so desire.
Snorkelling
The bays of Koh Samui contain many interesting coral reefs
abundant with tropical fish and other creatures. You can spend
hours investigating the coral right off the beach in front of the
resort. Equipment can be rented from the resort or nearby dive
shops.
Sea Kayaking
Koh Samui’s shoreline and nearby islands harbour a wealth of
marine, animal and plant life. For a close and leisurely look, there
is no better option than to spend a few hours or a day in a sea
kayak. Half-day, day and overnight guided trips are available
through the resorts. Kayaks can also be rented at the activity
centre next to the resort.
Sailing
The island and surrounding islands lend itself perfectly to a small
tour in a sailboat, a daytrip or romantic dinners while enjoying
the magnificent view and sunset.
Thai Cooking lessons
Learn how to make some famous Thai specialties. More
restaurants are now revealing the secrets behind their dishes
during 2-hour lessons in fully-equipped, modern kitchens. Fruit
and vegetable carving lessons are also quite popular for the
creatively-inspired. We can organise a special lesson with the
Amala Chef, who can help you create some mouth watering
dishes, that are simple and very impressive should you have a
dinner party at home after your holiday.
Thai Boxing
In Thailand, Muay Thai, in other words “Thai boxing” is the
national sport. It is a true Thai spectacle and is regarded as an
art form in its own right. While in Thailand, you will see and hear
noisy utility vehicles with fighters riding in the back touting for
spectators. Many people try their hands (feet, knees and elbows
too) at this sport while they are here in local training camps.
Great stories to take home to impress your friends - as well as
some bruises as souvenirs too.
Elephant Trekking
Enjoying an Elephant Show and trekking on the back of an
elephant would be ideal activities for those who wish to admire
the undisturbed secret waterfalls and get back to nature.
You will be amazed at the artistic talent of the pachyderms as
they produce incredible artwork, which you can purchase for a
small fee.
Spas and Thai Massages
Indulge yourself at our Amezcua Wellness Centre with one of our
unique treatments and massages to ensure you are revitalised,
relaxed and well rejuvenated. Prana Samui is the ideal natural
choice for a spa and detoxification getaway.
Full Moon Party
If you enjoy a great dance, this enormous party is celebrated on
every evening of the full moon on the eastern side of the island
Koh Pha-Ngan. This island is part of the Samui Archipelago, and
is a short ferry trip away from Big Buddha Beach.
Hiking
Explore the numerous scenic waterfalls and walking tracks on
Koh Samui. Walks vary in length from 30 minutes to several
hours. Prana’s staff can organise a guide or personal driver to
get you there, and supply you with a refreshing drink after you
have completed your hike. Definitely a stress free way of getting
Koh Samui? Why not try your hand at the exciting adventure
underwater world.
Scuba diving is the act of swimming underwater while using
Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. By carrying
a source of breathing gas (usually compressed air), the scuba
diver is able to stay underwater longer than with the simple
breath-holding techniques used in snorkeling and free-diving.
At Prana Resorts and Spa, we will take care of everything you
need to ensure your diving course is as safe, fun and enjoyable as
it could possibly be - all you need to do is show up with a sense of
adventure and be prepared to put a smile on your face.
We offer an exclusivity option which allows you to book an
instructor so that he is exclusive to you or your group for
the duration of the course. This guarantees that you receive
more attention, and make the most of your training. Having a
dedicated instructor is ideal for families and groups looking to
learn to dive together.
At Prana Samui, we can tailor make the course to suit how active
you want to be during your holiday.
The first step for someone new to Scuba is to try our discover
scuba course.
DISCOVER SCUBA
This begins with a 15-20 minute session in Prana’s swimming
pool to give you an introduction to breathing through a regulator,
in the comfort of waist deep water. You will then take a trip to
one of the fantastic dive destinations around Koh Samui, where
you will do two dives under the supervision of our Instructors, to
a maximum depth of 12 metres
Having a taste of exploring the underwater world, you may
want to do your PADI certificate.
PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) is the
world’s largest recreational diving membership and diver
training organisation, which is composed of modules divided
into theory and practical skills development.
There are two beginner PADI courses available for our guests
who want to proudly take home a PADI Certificate.
PADI SCUBA DIVER
This is a 2 day course for a lifetime certification which allows you
to dive anywhere in the world to a depth of 12 metres under the
guidance of a PADI Professional.
OPEN WATER DIVER
This is a 3 or 4 day course for a lifetime certification which allows
you to dive anywhere in the world with a certified buddy.
If you already have your PADI certificate then there are many
additional courses you can choose to experience in Koh Samui
to extend your diving knowledge and skill.
At Prana Resorts and Spa, Koh Samui, the Ang Thong National
Marine Park is close by you can explore the underwater world
and be amazed by the myriad of abundant sea life. Apart
from the big schools of fluorescent fish, brightly coloured
coral and waving anemones, you also have a good chance of
spotting placid whale sharks or manta rays passing by on their
frequent migration.
If that is not enough to wet your appetite (or your bathing
costume), contact Prana’s helpful and informed reservation
DESTINATIONS - BONVO
7 Simple Rules
to Cheaper, Lower Air Fares
Tip #1: Make your reservation early.
Many discount fares require that you make a reservation 7, 14 or 21 days in
advance, depending on the fare. The best international fares often require a
reservation 30 days in advance. Making a reservation as soon as you know
your travel dates increases your chances of finding a great fare. Think of it as
fresh fruits, the airline seat IS a perishable commodity.
Tip #2: Flying on a weekday usually costs less.
Flights departing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday usually offer the lowest
fares. Fares are sometimes (but not always) higher on Monday and Friday than
on other weekdays. Saturday flights occasionally have discount fares, but as a rule it’s
more expensive to fly on a weekend than a weekday.
Tip #3: Stay over a Saturday night.
Most low fares require that you stay over at least one Saturday night before your
return flight. However, some fares may only require you to stay a minimum of
3 or 4 days.
Tip #4: Did we mention you should make your reservation early?
Airlines sell only a limited number of seats at the lowest fares. When those seats sell
out, the price goes up! Which explains why there are different classes of seats even
though they all seem the same? Do note though, that lower class fares often come with
more restrictions.
Tip #5: Consider an airport in the surrounding area.
You may enjoy significant savings if you are willing to fly into nearby airports, especially
if you are willing to stay with the same carrier on your next departing / return flights.
Tip #6: Try an earlier or later travel date.
To get the lowest roundtrip fare, the same (class of) fare must be available on both the
departing and return flights you select. If the fare is sold out on either of these, the price
you end up with will be much higher. If possible, consider flying on another date.
Tip #7: Book your trip with Bonvo!
Bonvo offers its unique and proprietary Dual Search capability, which is able to seek
out air fares instantly from the Global Distribution System (GDS) and at the same time
source for ‘bulk / consolidator’ fares directly from the airlines and its wholesalers. For
more information and general enquiries, please contact customercare@bonvo.com or
call us at +65 6491 0900.
Whether you are a
corporate traveller
on a business trip or a
holidaymaker flying to
your next vacation, there
are ways to get cheaper air
fares. Follow Bonvo’s guide
and you may save more on
your next flight.
THE TRANSIT LOUNGE
Dr. Mark Paul Platon, a Diamond Club member, shares with us his most memorable holiday
experiences to date.
Q. What attracted you to becoming a
QVI Club Member?
My family and I love to travel, so when we
were introduced to QVI Club and learned
about how much we could save on our
accommodations around the world, we
immediately decided to join. It’s also nice
to know that as QVI Club members we’d
be able to stay at spacious well-appointed
resorts and hotels instead of small
cramped and uncomfortable rooms.
Q. What is your most memorable
holiday experience and why?
Q. What are your favorite destinations?
When I’m in the mood for a highly urban
retreat, New York City is still on the top
of my list. The fast and trend-setting
pace ensures that there’s never a dull
moment when I’m there. But when I’ve
had too much of the hustle and bustle
of city life, Switzerland is by far the best
place to detox. It still offers the comforts
of city living, but it’s so much more safe,
relaxed, quiet and clean. Arm yourself
with a Travel Pass and a couple of basic
French and German phrases and you can
wander aimlessly by train all throughout
this picturesque country.
22
My most memorable holiday experience
by far was when I went to visit my
sisters Czarra and Czarina in Switzerland
last 2006 and we went around Europe.
We had quite an adventure together
in Paris, Barcelona, Milan, Rome,
Amsterdam, and back to Switzerland
where we celebrated a simple Filipino
Noche Buena or evening dinner to
usher in Christmas and my birthday.
Traveling is made even more special and
memorable when you’re with loved ones.
Reminiscing on the beautiful sights,
hilarious mishaps, and great times
exploring new cities never fail to make me
smile and brighten up my day wherever
I might be.
Q. How about your worst holiday
experience and why?
I can’t say I’ve had a bad holiday
experience yet. Even when I had to go
on duty and work at the hospital over
Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve
which are normally reserved as special
family time, I still managed to enjoy the
spirit of the season.
Q. What do you like to do most when
on vacation?
Every time I’m on vacation or even
when I’m visiting a new destination for
business, I just love exploring my new
environment on foot. If I get the chance,
I also make it a point to try out the local
public transport system, specially the
Metro. Each one’s got its own personality.
And if it’s fairly safe, I won’t even mind
getting lost! That’s an adventure in itself,
and there’s so much to see and learn
while finding my way back home.
Pictures of Dr. Platon’s vacations around the world
are his best souvenirs
Q. What is your idea of a perfect
holiday?
A Perfect Holiday: No work, no plans, no
budget. Everything spontaneous and onthe-fly.
Q. Amongst all the countries you have
been to, which one has left you with the
strongest impression?
I consider myself blessed to have seen
countries outside of my own, but taking
everything into account, there is really
no place like the Philippines. It has a little
bit of everything: interesting historical
sites, colorful cultural celebrations,
upscale urban settings, gorgeous nature
retreats, and charming hospitable
people. No wonder more and more people
from around the world are choosing to
live here.
Q. Name at least 3 essential items you
always take with you when traveling
overseas?
1. My notebook computer - It pays
to stay connected, especially when
you’re stuck in the airport.
2. My Bio Disc - keeps jetlag at bay,
plus it helps me stay energized the
entire time.
3. A digital camera - Pictures are the
best souvenir.
Q. If you were exiled to a desert island
and could only take one person and one
personal item with you, what would
you select?
One person? Hmm … I haven’t met her
yet. One personal item? A big fat Swiss
Army knife!
