President’s Message
Committed to Serve
It
is a distinct honor and gives me great pleasure to serve as the president
of the MAC for the 2011–12 year. MAC’s 4,000+ coaches and
supporters have helped make it one of the most recognized coaches’
organizations in the entire country. With the profound leadership of Johnny
Mims (our executive director), the work of the executive board and various
committees and the superlative efforts and never-ceasing-to-amaze work of
Sara and Teresa (our administrative assistants), the MAC keeps looking to
become strong and stronger. Together, with God’s guidance and direction,
we — the MAC— continue to strive to reach new heights.
Please don’t hesitate to call if I can be of service or assistance to you. Have a great
season and school year! May God continue to richly bless each of you.
Wert Spiva
2011–2012 MAC President
// Executive Director’s Message
A Great Start to the New School Year
As
I look back on the 2011 clinic, this one may just be the best we
have had. I extend my appreciation to the many individuals who
helped to make it such a success. Sara, Teresa and I say “thank
you” to the MAC committee members who gave up their personal time to
help us out at the clinic. We also appreciate the all-star coaches for their
commitment to their sport and the athletes by giving of their time to make
these all-star events happen and be successful.
The MAC and the MHSAA continue to work together and support one another as we
serve the coaches of this state. We look forward to working with Don Hinton and his staff
in the coming year. We also appreciate our working relationship with the Fellowship of
Christian Athletes. Bill Buckner and his staff continue to have a tremendous positive impact
on our athletic programs throughout the state.
As a new school year begins, the MAC wishes you the best in all of your endeavors. Each
of you has a special role that you play in the lives of young athletes. You should count it
an honor and a privilege to hold the title of COACH.
» MAC Assists Athletes’
Families with Recruiting
Education
As athletic administrators and coaches, we all understand
the pressures that the recruiting process can create. We
are also aware of a growing industry commonly referred
to as “recruiting services.” While some of these services
provide useful information, the vast majority of them seek
to capitalize financially on our families’ weakness… the
promise of receiving an athletic scholarship.
That is one of the many reasons that the MAC is proud
to provide an NIAAA-endorsed, non-profit webinar solution
to help our membership address this troublesome area.
On the MAC website (www.mscoaches.com), you will
find a link that reads MAC NCAA/NAIA/JUCO Eligibility
and Recruiting Webinar. The MAC recruiting webinar
addresses many important topics concerning academic
eligibility, recruiting and social responsibility, including:
• Three rules of being a parent
• Scholarship myths and facts
• NAIA and JUCO education
• Scholarships… do they differ?
• The name game
• Negotiate/cooperative education
• Dangers of social networking/cell phones
• National letter of intent
• NCAA/NAIA eligibility centers
• Recruiting services
• NCAA core course requirements
We highly recommend that you make your athletes’
families aware of this no-cost service. The MAC feels it
will go a long way in serving our athletic community.
» Notes from the MAC Staff
• The tentative date set for the 2012 Coaches Clinic is
July 11–13.
• Please refer to your MAC Directory to view the calendar
of events for the upcoming year. Some all-star games have
been moved to coincide closer to the end of the season.
• We DO NOT send out All-Star nomination forms. They
can be downloaded from our website and faxed to this office.
• You may join our association online with a debit/credit
card. Visit our website www.mscoaches.com.
• The MAC will not be responsible for sending you another
magazine or the Directory if you did not comply with the
instruction to give us your home mailing address, which
we must have! R
