UNCHARTED
AIDEN, EREZ
One of the greatest untapped resources of today isn’t offshore oil or natural gas—it’s data. Gigabytes,
exabytes (that’s one quintillion bytes) of data are sitting on servers across the world. So how can we start
to access this explosion of information, this “big data,” and what can it tell us? Erez Aiden and Jean-
Baptiste Michel are two young scientists at Harvard who started to ask those questions. They teamed up
with Google to create the Ngram Viewer, a Web-based tool that can chart words throughout the massive
Google Books archive, sifting through billions of words to find fascinating cultural trends. On the front
lines of Big Data, Aiden and Michel realized that this big dataset—the Google Books archive that contains
remarkable information on the human experience—had huge implications for looking at our shared
human history.
UNCLE JOHN'S BATHROOM READER: WEIRD CANADA
UNCLE JOHN'S
Did you know that Canada was almost called Hochelaga? That’s just one of thousands of wacky facts
awaiting readers in Uncle John’s quirky celebration of Earth’s second largest country. You’ll find page
after page of bizarre history (like why the beaver was once classified as a fish), plus head-scratching
news items (like the crook who returned to the Tim Hortons he’d just robbed to tip the workers), odd
places to go (like Mr. Spock’s birthplace in a town called Vulcan), and crazy eats (like the restaurant that
makes you eat in complete darkness).
UNDER FIRE: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE ATTACK IN BENGHAZI
BURTON, FRED
The first explosive inside account of the attack at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that took the
lives of four Americans, including the U.S. Ambassador. On the night of September 11, 2012, the
American diplomatic mission at Benghazi, Libya, came under ferocious attack by a heavily armed group
of Islamic militants. Based on the exclusive cooperation of eyewitnesses and confidential sources within
the intelligence, diplomatic, and military communities, authors Fred Burton and Samuel Katz bring to life
the terrifying twelve-hour ordeal. More than just the minute-by-minute narrative of a desperate last stand
in the midst of an anarchic rebellion, "Under Fire" is the story of the gallantry of individuals facing
impossible odds and a compelling testament to the bravery and selflessness of the men who put their
country first while serving in one of the most dangerous regions in the world.
