New Year’s Day Celebration
SSVT wishes all its members a happy and prosperous New Year. On
January 1 the Temple will be open from 8:30 am to 9:00 pm. Suprabatham,
Abhishekams, Alankarams and other temple Pujas will be performed from
8:30 am to 10:30 am. Archanas will begin at 10:00 am and will be done in
batches to minimize the waiting time, Due to packed schedule of activities,
priests will not be able to perform Car Pujas or any other Special Pujas.
However, if any devotee wants Car Puja done that day, arrangements will
be made to have priests perform Archana by placing the car keys before a
deity of devotee's choice. Please see the manager to make such an
arrangement. Special Archanas to all Utsava Deities will be performed
every hour, beginning at 11:00 am, for a special donation of $ 35. Devotees
may also sponsor all the abhishekams that day, Utsava Deity archana and
archana to any two Ishta Devatas (Two Deities of their choice) for a
donation of $ 101. There will be a sale of Saris (used to decorate the Deities
over the past years) in the auditorium from 11 am to 3 pm. Due to the heavy
expected demand, devotees may select saris on a first come first served
basis till supplies last. We will also be holding a Jewelry sale starting at 11
am in the auditorium. Food and sweets will be available in the temple
kitchen from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Vaikunta Ekadasi Celebration

Vaikunta Ekadasi, which falls on Monday, January 9 (as per the North
American Panchangam), is considered to be the most important Ekadasi in
the Sri Vaishnava tradition. According to one Vishnu Purana, observing the
Ekadasi Vratam on Vaikunta Ekadasi day confers the benefits equivalent to
observing all the Ekadasis during the year. Fasting (according to one's
capacity), chanting the names of the Lord, visiting Vishnu temples are
some of the ways this festival is observed. This year this festival will be
celebrated over three days with special Pujas on everyday. Devotees will

Ayyappa Makara Sankranti

The miracle of the manifestation of a 'Jyothi' on the Makara Sankranthi Day
every year from the Kantha Malai peaks at Sabari Mala is attributed to the
appearance of Swami Ayyappan to bless His devotees. This event is
described as 'Makara Vilakku'. A special Puja is organized by devotees all
over the world to celebrate the occasion. MAKARA SANKRANTHI
marks the grand finale of the 2 month period of the Sabarimala pilgrimage.
Guruthi Puja on January 19th marks the end of the celebration. See page 3.
Andal Kalyanam Sunday, January 15, 2006
Goddess Andal, after observing the Paavai Nombu (vows) during the
Dhanus month, merged with Lord Ranganatha in Srirangam This union is
celebrated as Andal Kalyanam, which will be observed on Sunday January
15, 2006 in our temple. Participating in this event is considered auspicious,
especially for those in search of good life partners. SSVT’s new trustees
and officers will take their oath at this time. Details on page3.

Chairman's Year-End Appeal
Swami Saranam!! Dear Devotees
Sri Siva Vishnu Temple wishes you and your family members
a very happy, healthy, peaceful and prosperous New Year
2006. In this holiday season of giving, I request you to think
about Sri Siva Vishnu Temple. As we embark into the New Year,
the temple very much appreciates your year-end tax-deductible
charitable contributions. The temple needs your continued
financial support. The temple has both short and long term
financial needs.
As you are all aware, there is an urgent short term need to expand
parking facilities at the temple. We have appointed a consultant
to design a parking lot in the temple’s property that will more
than double our present parking capacity. Preliminary
indications are that this will cost in excess of $750,000. During
our very successful Annual Fund Raising Dinner held on
October 30, 2005 we got pledges in excess of $100,000 towards
this goal. I urge all of you to send in your tax deductible year end
donations to help us meet this goal. Please contribute to the short
term needs through regular contributions and annual puja
sponsorships.
In the long term, the temple has ambitious plans for growing our
institution to becoming, not only the primary place of Hindu
worship in North America, but also the primary center of Hindu
cultural, educational and social needs of the community. Our
Strategic Planning Taskforce is actively working towards this
goal. The increasing financial needs to meet our long term goals
are best met by an endowment that would provide financial
stability to the temple. The temple has a goal to raise at least 20
million towards the temple endowment. Please contribute to the
long term needs through lifetime puja sponsorship and by
including the temple in your long term financial and estate plans.

Divine incarnation of Mother Earth), and Thiruvempaavai the divine

14) at 9:30 AM. Copies of Thiruppaavai are available in several

For several months we have been requesting our devotees
to choose the option of getting the newsletter via E-mail
instead of regular mail to reduce the mailing expense. So
far less than 200 devotees have chosen this option. Many
thanks to these few who have provided their E-mail
addresses. The number of newsletters now being mailed by
regular is at 16,000. We are extremely happy that our
congregation is growing. We once again urge that many
more of our devotees choose the E-mail option. Please send
an E-mail with your correct E-mail address and current
mailing address to ssvt@ssvt.org with this request. Please
be assured that your E-mail addresses will only be used for
Sri Siva Vishnu Temple correspondence and will NOT be

details of the monthly pujas, festivals and special events during 2006 will be available in the
temple on New Years Day. Please pick up your copy during your next visit.
Call Before You Drive
During inclement weather the drive way and the parking lot may not be cleared in time and
hence the temple may close early, open late or remain closed to public the whole day. On such
occasions please call the temple (301-552-3335) and listen to the voice mail message before
you drive.

MITRA MANDALA - A Circle of Friends
The proposal to create Mitra Mandala - A Circle of Friends
has been approved by SSVT as a service to the Hindu community in
the Greater Washington Area. Mitra Mandala is intended to assist
members of the community to cope with circumstances such as
family discord, serious illness or bereavement.
Many immigrant families in the US, are sometimes without
the traditional support system of close relatives; and often may find
themselves isolated & alone when dealing with personal problems.
Mitra Mandala is intended as a center providing supportive and
caring guidance for those in need of such counsel. For example, to
relieve feelings of loneliness and isolation, elders may need one-onone
friendship with volunteers, who have an understanding of Indian
languages Disaster and culture. Relief For (Continued some others from whose page1) need is greater,
referrals to other community services may be necessary. In these
cases, Mitra Mandala may function as a starting point for appropriate
assessment of needs. Depending on the circumstances of each case,
and of course always with the approval of the concerned members of
the family, the volunteers will suggest appropriate involvement of
other specialists. To the extent possible, the specialists would be
drawn from qualified and committed volunteers from the Hindu
community.
The Circle of friends in Mitra Mandala, will consist of a
network of volunteers who, as caring individuals, will devote time to
understand the problems faced by the aggrieved families and arrange
for the support needed to deal with their situation. These volunteers
may or may not have experienced similar situations in their own life.
They are however expected to have attributes that equip them to

provide guidance and solace to the families to which they are
assigned, viz., objectivity, maturity of outlook, a spiritual bent of

necessary. The volunteers may not be not trained professionals
themselves, but they would be familiar with the specialist services
that are available in the community to deal with various situations.
There is no fee for Mitra Mandala's service. In fact, at least
in the initial phase, the volunteers will have to incur, from their own
pockets, any incidental travel and communications expenses.
However, if there is a charge for any of the specialist services, that
would be the responsibility of the family obtaining such services.
Mitra Mandala has been set up in such a way that SSVT as the
sponsoring organization does not incur any financial obligation.

REGULATIONS FOR PERFORMING IN THE ARADHANA
If you would like to participate in the Aradhana, please read the following regulations and follow them during your performance
Individual singing is restricted to Thyagaraja Kritis only as we feel this is more appropriate to a function of this nature.
Please limit your homage to a maximum of 5 minutes and only one kriti.
After providing opportunity to everyone and if time permits, we will given an opportunity to perform again, if appropriate
If you are performing with a group (3 or more vocalists) then you can perform up to 3 Kritis
There are many people who wish to pay their homage to the St. Thyagaraja, and your co-operation in this regard is essential.
Please do not sing any Alapana, niraval or kalpana swaras. This restriction does not apply to chitta swaras that appear in compositions.
SSVT will not provide any accompanists on stage. If you wish, you may bring your own accompaniments. No solos for the accompanists are

Year End Contribution Totals
To Get Your Accurate Contribution Totals... The temple seeks
to provide devotees with accurate figures for charitable
contributions for tax purposes. To do this, we need your help:
1) Addresses on checks. Please ensure that every check received
by the temple has your latest address. If you have already given us
a change-of-address form, but are using checks with your old
address, please cross out the old address and write in the new one.
2) Multiple names. If you and your spouse use different last
names, please let us know by sending an email to ssvt@ssvt.org or

donations. SSVT patrons may access their donations information for

You will be required to Register your current contact information and
create your own secure personal login. The system will assist you in
identifying your SSVT related donations information. We invite you to
visit the site on or after December 15th, 2005.You may then review your
donations for the 2005 tax year and print a statement for tax purposes on
or after February 1st 2006

knowledge of Hinduism and workings of an association or nonprofit
