BIRTHDAYS DON’T GET
MUCH BETTER THAN THIS...
On September
celebrated yet
another birthday
and little did she
Her husband Bob
bought her a red
Buick and had the
car dealer hide it
in the Christmas
t r e e f i e l d s .
That afternoon
Bob and Evie
stopped by the
tree farm to check on things. Evie noticed some things
were out of place. When she brought it to Bobs attention,
he was concerned their business had been vandalized.
He and Evie walked around suspiciously to see
what they could find. He went one way, she went
another. And find she did--complete with balloons!
So, when you see Evie driving around town in her
shiny new car give a toot and wave because she is
very proud of her car. Nice going Bob. What a guy!
THANK YOU
In the past weeks I have been to the transfer station
and various functions around town with a petition
supporting the naming of the unnamed brook to
Skoog Brook. Presently I have approximately 400
signatures.
I thank Jay Linddy and Frank William, transfer
station supervisor and attendant, for letting me
circulate the petition at the landfill. Also, thanks to the
Senior Center members who allowed me to collect
signatures at their tag sale. I will keep you updated as
to how my endeavor is progressing.
Thank you, Andover, for supporting the Skoog family.
Ellis Island: a portal into the United States during good times
and difficult times. Do you have a grandfather or greatgrandmother
who came through those doors? Many of us do.
Do you know that the buildings on Ellis Island are sitting empty
and alone and deteriorating? There is a movement to restore
the buildings so that we can visit and remember and hold on to
the memories that are passed from one generation to the next.
There are many famous people getting on the bandwagon,
such as movie stars and activists I’ll bet you didn’t know
that there are two people in Andover who are part of a
television piece for Ellis Island who traveled there to
tell their story about their ancestors. In addition, their
pictures are on the Web site developed for Ellis Island
along with their story and the stories of many others.
Those two people are Gerald and Scott Lindley.
First, Gerald’s story. Gerald and his wife Pierrette moved
here in 1971 from Central Falls, Rhode Island where
Gerald’s grandfather John settled when he first came to the
United States in 1913 through Ellis Island. John Lindley
came from Kersley, England. He had been injured in a
mining accident. His wife had died, and the time was right to
begin a new life in a new land for himself and his children.
After coming to this country, Gerald’s grandfather went on
to enlist in the Canadian Army, and had to lie about his age
because he was too old for the U.S. Army. His patriotism
to the country that had opened its doors to him was strong
and he served bravely. He then re-entered the U.S. at the
end of the war in 1918 through Ellis Island a second time.
Scott’s story. Scott is Gerald’s grandson. Scott lives with
his parents Dennis and Carol Lindley
and his two brothers Derrick and
Jordan in Andover. Scott is a Junior
at RHAM High School in Hebron
and The Greater Hartford Academy
of the Arts. He is an accomplished
actor and singer and also has been
modeling and acting professionally
in New York City since an early age.
It was through Scott’s contacts in
New York that the opportunity arose
to participate in the “We Are Ellis
Island” organization to raise money
to rehabilitate the buildings in need.
Scott shared that the day that he and
his grandfather were at Ellis Island
doing the filming, it was “eerie,
so much history, a nice sunny day,
but cold in the buildings.” The
experience was obviously significant and moving to both
Lindleys. To walk where their forebears had walked and
see what they saw brought them closer together and closer
to the feelings that must have been felt by John Lindley.
Scott and Gerald proudly showed me the Web site,
www.weareellisisland.org which described the cause
and the movement that are being put in motion to save the
buildings on Ellis Island. I will excerpt a few paragraphs
from the Web site to entice you to look for yourself.
“Ellis Island, the great national landmark and irreplaceable
American icon, is in dire need of repair and your help.
From 1892 to 1954, the island served as a gateway into the
United States for over 12 million people from all over the
world. Today nearly 40% of all Americans can trace their
roots to Ellis Island. In 1954, the island was closed but not
protected from the elements of weather. In the 1990s, the
main building was renovated and reopened as a museum, but
much of the historic site still remains closed to the public.”
“Save Ellis Island seeks to raise the funds necessary to restore,
and put to beneficial reuse, the deteriorated buildings of Ellis
Island. We aspire to capture the essence of Ellis Island by sharing
the stories that highlight its most compelling human element: the
immigrants who arrived here seeking equal rights, overcoming
challenges and enduring life’s many struggles, all to create
new opportunities for themselves and generations to come.”
“Save Ellis Island, Inc. is the non-profit organization
dedicated to raising awareness and funding to restore, and put
to beneficial reuse, the deteriorated buildings on Ellis Island.”
Scott and Gerald are proud participants in this worthy
cause and have obviously been changed by their experience
on Ellis Island. Please visit the Web site and look for
their picture and their story. You can also add your
story to the Web site. What a wonderful opportunity.
ANDOVER FIRE
DEPARTMENT
Jenny Carol
Please number your house and
mailbox with highly visible
numbers. The metal signs you
see around town can be purchased through the Hebron
Fire Department for a small cost. They make great
Christmas gifts to your loved ones and your family.
As winter approaches here are a few suggestions:
The time is here to make sure your chimney is clean
and in working order if you are going to be using a
fireplace, woodstove, pellet stove etc. Don’t wait until
something serious happens, such as a chimney fire.
When we all turn our clocks back and snuggle down for an
extra hour of sleep be reminded this is the time to change
the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide
detectors a small expense but saves so many lives.
Contact your furnace company for a cleaning and tune up.
This will not only save on the cost of heating this year but
will also prevent furnace problems such as carbon
monoxide leaks and buildups.
On the medical side of the Fire Department:
Remember to keep a current legible list of your
medications and dosages and the reason you are taking
them in a convenient area (such as on the refrigerator
door or on the counter with your medications). This
helps us help you in time of a medical emergency.
Remember not to drink and drive and always
wear your seat belts. Don’t become a statistic.
We will be having a safe Halloween stop at the firehouse
for trick-or-treaters from 6 to 8 p.m. Stop by for a
goodie bag, something warm to drink, and show us
your costumes. We look forward to seeing you there.
We will also be doing some Fire Prevention at the
elementary school in the month of October. Please
review with your children the information given to them.
If you can’t ignore an insult, top it;
if you can’t top it, laugh it off;
and if you can’t laugh it off,
it’s probably deserved.
SENIORS HELPING SENIORS
Georgette Conrad
The Board of Selectmen appointed the Senior Tax Stabilization
(STS) Committee at their July 10 meeting. The five people
on the committee are: Bob Wanagel, Ed Nagy, Beverly
Matthews, Ruth MacRobbie, and Georgette Conrad.
We held our first meeting on July 19 to review the STS
Proposal package and make any changes as voted on by
the committee. We gave the revised package to the First
Selectman to be reviewed by the Town Attorney. At their
meeting on August 1, the Board of Selectmen voted to send
the proposal to the Board of Finance. Watch for an update.
Our Proposal is very simple. In general, you must be
68 years of age, or disabled, and have an adjusted gross
income of no more than $45,000 to qualify. Every year,
the Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance would
agree to set aside a pool of money for the STSP, which
would then be divided among the eligible applicants for
that year. We proposed $30,000 for this year’s pool. If
60 applicants qualified, each household would receive a
$500 tax credit on their real estate taxes. If the number of
eligible applicants were fewer, the tax credit amount would
be more, and vice versa. The pool could change from year
to year and the applicants would have to qualify each year.
REGISTRARS OF
VOTERS
Cathy Palazzi, Deputy Registrar
Your Registrar of Voters and
Deputies have attended the
State-required training sessions.
Andover is fortunate as we have
not encountered any difficulties with the new machines. It is
just a matter of adjusting to the new ways and we seem to be
moving in the right direction. We will be holding referendums
at the new addition at the Town Office Building. Federal
elections will still be held at the Elementary School in the gym.
We will be purchasing storage units to house the new voting
equipment.
In the spring we will be doing a canvas of registered voters to make
sure addresses are listed correctly for the November 2008 election.
We have excellent election officials who work at the polls
and currently we are looking for people who would be able
to moderate under the Democratic party. If interested, please
contact Kaye Cardin, the Democratic Registrar of Voters,
at 742-0188. Thank you to our Town Clerk, Carol Lee and
Mikki Busch, our Assistant Town Clerk, for their help with
referendums.
The alternative could be very costly to the town, and here’s
why: Seniors cost the town very little because the services
they use are provided mostly by volunteers in the town, many
of whom are seniors themselves. If they sell, the potential
for new owners with school-age
children is very high. This means
additional costs to the taxpayers for
greater educational needs and/or a
diminishing quality of education.
According to the published figures, it
costs $11,000 per student in Andover
Elementary School and rises to
$13,000 per student at RHAM. For
children with special needs, the cost
rises to over $80,000 per student. If
four homes with no children each
pay $3,000 in taxes, it is $12,000
of gravy for the town. Those same
four homes with only one child
each will cost the town $45,000 to
$52,000 for education alone. That
$12,000 in taxes now has a shortfall
of $33,000 to $40,000 in costs.
Above all, it could help some seniors
or disabled, persons on fixed incomes,
to remain in the homes they love.
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,
committed citizens can change the world.
Indeed, it‛s the only thing that ever has.
is a special treat for Andover seniors to visit such
badly we need a senior center in our own town.
DIRECTOR
Heidi M. Donnelly
Dear Community Members:
It is hard to start thinking of the
upcoming holidays already but we
are preparing to work with those
families and individuals in Andover
who are going through difficult
times. Illness, job loss, and other
situations arise, and as a community
we try to help fill the gaps. We will
be putting together between 20-30
holiday food boxes for both Thanksgiving and the December
holidays. We also try to provide toys and small gifts for our
families and individuals in need or alone over the holidays.
In order to do this we depend on the generosity
of our friends and neighbors in the community.
If you are able to help in any way it would be
greatly appreciated. We have many individuals who help
year after year by adopting families, helping to prepare
and deliver food baskets, picking up donations from the
State Trooper Toy Drive, and in many other ways over
Thanksgiving and Christmas. Many of our businesses and
local churches also participate and provide food, turkeys,
and other holiday items. St. George’s Episcopal Church,
Andover Country Pleasures, Lunt’s Market, Network,
Scott Electrokraft, SDR Enterprises, Ted’s Market,
and others have helped on many occasions. The Andover
Congregational Church is invaluable, donating food, gifts,
space to prepare and distribute items to families, and most
importantly by the giving of time by its members. We hope
that if you have helped in the past you will continue this
tradition. If you are new to our programs will you consider
helping in some way this year? Donations of holiday foods,
turkeys, hams, fresh vegetables and fruit, and other “fixings”
are always welcome, as are holiday plants, candy, or small
gifts for seniors, and toys, gloves, mittens, hats, socks, etc.
Canned goods and other nonperishables for the food
The Thanksgiving boxes will be distributed
on Saturday, November 17 and for Christmas
on Saturday December 22. We ask that
arrangements for donations be made so that they are ready
The Web site Committee
You need not have computer
A couple of hours a month is all that is
required. If you have computer skills
h e r b a c e o u s p e r e n n i a l w i t h
common names such as Hellebore,
Christmas Rose, and Lenten
Rose. The most common species are the Christmas Rose,
Hellebore niger, and the Lenten Rose, Helleborus orientalis.
Hellebores are long-lived and easy to care for with interesting
flowers and foliage. They like moist but well-drained sandy, rich
soil in light to partial shade. The plants do best in slightly alkaline
soil and are cold hardy to zone 3. In the late winter or early spring,
clusters of large, nodding, cup-shaped flowers appear. The color
of the blooms range from white, pink. light green, purple, and
red. The flowers have five showy petals. While the flowers of
the species are single, some of the hybrid cultivars have flowers
that are double. The plants have a height and width of about 18
inches. They are an attractive addition to the perennial flower bed.
Helleborus go well with spring blooming flowers, such
as daffodils and tulips. Since they can tolerate shade
in the summer they can be planted in a naturalized
setting among deciduous trees. Another advantage of
Helleborus is that they are not bothered by deer. This is
probably because all parts
of all species are poisonous.
However, the plants,
especially the young leaves,
can be attacked by slugs.
Divide the clumps in the
early spring. Seedlings
may appear around the
mother plant but may not be true to the cultivar.
Helleborus seed do not store well and therefore
should be sown fresh. The seeds need a cold treatment
(stratification), and should be put outside over the winter
or refrigerated for three months at 40 degrees. It can
take from two to three years for the plants to bloom.
Then seek your job with thankfulness and work till further orders,
WIND AND SAIL,
AND THE U.S. MAIL
Mary Duval
From time to time, most of us will cast an expectant glance
out our front windows, waiting for the little white U.S.
Mail van, with Jim Hillman or his sister Mona bringing
us our mail. The Hillman children grew up in Andover
and followed in their Dad’s footsteps, although Jim did
attend culinary school. For 28 years, some of it part-time,
Jim has been a postman in Andover. But did you know
Born to sail--Jim in his Hobie Cat 14 Turbo
that Jim is really in his element on a racing sailboat? Yes!
At Andover Lake, Jim learned to sail, swim, and be at home
in and on the water. The races are held on the Northern end
of East Grand Lake, which is bordered on the American side
by Orient, Maine, and on the Canadian side by Fosterville,
New Brunswick, where the Hillman’s cottage is located.
Here Jim spends most of his vacation time, and races a
sleek Hobie Cat 14 Turbo, which is a Hobie 14 with a jib.
Three races are held each summer. Jim
says that two of them count, so your
slowest time can be thrown out. The
course covers four miles, with about
13 boats participating. The races are
multi-class. Each boat carries its own
handicap to make a level playing field.
And on this field, Andover’s own Jim
Hillman is a racing champion! He
sums it up best in his own words: “I
won in overall standings in 2005 and
again this year, winning two out of
three races, with a third place finish
in the last race.” Congratulations,
Jim – what a ride! Besides racing his
Hobie, Jim also windsurfs off Cape
Hatteras each year in the spring.
Now you may want to look upon
those bills, advertising circulars, and
junk mail in a new light: They are
A group of friends gathered on September 23, 2007 at
the Townsend Cemetery to observe the 100 th anniversary
The Corporation was founded on September 24, 1907 as a
The first burial, was Marcy Swetland, age three years.
closely follows that of our town, from Ecclesiastical Society
in 1748 to an incorporated town in 1848. Abraham Blackman
issued the original deed for the land that would become
Townsend Cemetery to Obediah Newcomb and Joseph
Swetland “for a burying place” on September 20, 1748, in
what was then the Town of Hebron. Mr. Blackman sold the
land for “ye sum of five pounds…but more particularly for
ye love I bear to ye society of Andover.” Prior to the official
acquisition of the land by Mr. Newcomb and Mr. Swetland,
the first burial, that of Marcy Swetland, age three years,
was recorded in the “burying place” on February 19, 1748.
The initial land grant for the burying place was eight rods
(128 feet) wide at the front, and four rods at the rear, being
twenty rods deep. In 1848, Robert Ryan deeded more land
to the society, and the two plots were combined to form the
land we now know as Townsend
Cemetery. The row of large maples
in front of the cemetery has stood
since the 1700s, and the stone wall
and iron gate were added in 1934.
The Soldier’s Grave is that of Captain
Simon Smith. At the time of his death,
during the French and Indian War, he
was a soldier of His Majesty the King.
He was serving faithfully, attempting
to return dispatches from New London
to Hartford, when he succumbed to
smallpox, and, according to history/
legend, was buried along with his
horse and his gear. The estate of
Charles Baker deeded the gravesite,
which is four rods square, to the
Association on February 11, 1924.
by way of the Townsend Cemetery, offers the people of
town this beautiful spot as a burying place. It is with great
regard that the members of the corporation have cared
for the cemetery throughout the past one hundred years.
all those who participated to make this a memorable day.
Special thanks to Robert Whitcomb, Sexton for the
IS YOUR HOME 30 YEARS OLD? YOU HAVE A PROBLEM!
“A hidden danger causing hundreds of electrical fires
in older homes all over the region every year is the
problem, and it’s a very serious matter,” says Tim Pallas of
Affordable Electrical Services LLC of Columbia.
“It’s a simple issue, easily fixed yet overwhelmingly ignored
and incredibly dangerous” says Tim. “We see it every day,
homes were outfitted with 60 amp services 40-50 years ago,
because that was all a typical home required. With the addition
of microwave ovens, air conditioners, home appliances, bigger
and more powerful ovens and stoves, large screen TV’s, stereos,
pools, more of everything…the demand for more and more
electricity is growing every day and yet its running through
the same system built to service half the electricity 40-50 years
ago.”
It’s a natural trend. Electricity use per home has steadily
increased every year for the past 50 years, this we all know.
The service usually is not upgraded until something happens
and that something could be a fire.
It’s easy to understand that an electrical service designed to
provide 60 amps of power utilizing less safe older style fuses
and are now required to put out a hundred amps to satisfy
the demands of today’s household, is a grossly over stressed
system.
Add the huge increase in the use of electricity to the
natural decay of insulation, corrosion of connections, and
less safe old-style fuses and you have a fire hazard just
waiting to burn a home down.
“I see frayed wires and hot systems every day,” says
Pallas, “hot from too much current flowing through the
system, which with a power surge, or just one too many
hair dryers and the system heats up causing more decay
every day and finally bursts into flames.”
Windham Fire Marshall Michael E. Licata says “electrical
fires are among the worst, they spread quickly in the walls
without warning causing serious damage. It’s one of
the more common causes of fires along with equipment
failures/damage, and the typical homeowner is completely
unaware of this very dangerous hazard.”
“The good news is this problem is easy to fix,” says Tim.
“The solution is simple, every homeowner with a 30 year
old home must have their service upgraded to support
today’s demand for electricity. The danger is real. Protect
your family and home, upgrade your electrical service to
meet today’s requirements”.
WHO ARE YOU AND
WHAT DID YOU SAY?
An elderly widow and widower were
dating for about five years. The man
finally decided to ask her to marry.
She immediately said yes.
Mrs. Doris Chamberlin, principal of Andover School,
and her young charges must have been thrilled Thursday
night. Who wouldn’t be with a check for $259.54.
The next morning when he awoke, he couldn‛t
remember what her answer was! Was she happy?
I think so, wait, no, she looked at me funny. After
about an hour of trying to remember to no avail
he got on the telephone and gave her a call.
Embarrassed, he admitted that he
didn‛t remember her answer to the
marriage proposal. “Oh”, she said,
“I‛m so glad you called. I remembered
saying ‘yes‛ to someone, but I couldn‛t
remember who it was.”
The check presentation was the climax
of a town-wide drive here sponsored
by the Andover Grange 76 to get funds
for playground equipment for the
school’s empty four-acre playground.
Master James H. Hendry of the
Grange said today that the amount
collected was “much better than
we expected.” The original goal
was $200. He said that “more was
still coming in” and this, in turn,
would be turned over to the school.
The occasion for the presentation
was the annual Christmas party at the
school for the children. Also present
for the ceremony was Chairman
Henry T. Skoog of the community
drive, and John B. Hutchinson of
the committee handling the drive.
SARAH SKOOG MENTORS CHILDREN IN
THE TRAGEDY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, also known
as TAPS, is an annual gathering of those who have lost a
loved one in military service. The camp allows families to
grieve and acknowledge the loss of their loved ones, and
meet others who have either suffered the same loss or who
can help understand and mentor. The camp founder, Bonnie
Carroll, lost her husband, Brig. General Tom Carroll, in an
Army National Guard plane crash in 1992. TAPS is a threeday
program held yearly over Memorial Day weekend. This
year, at the Crystal City Camp in Virginia, more than 200
children and parents attended, with 190 volunteer mentors
--mostly military--to help families honor their loved one.
The camp began on a Friday and children chose
their mentors, and ended on Sunday with a dinner
and goodbyes. The families were treated to see the
sights around Washington, D.C., attended a free
circus, and went to Arlington National Cemetery to
watch President George Bush’s address to the nation.
One major highlight of the weekend was a balloon release. The
children wrote a letter to their deceased loved one, tied it to a balloon
and released it. Reagan International Airport also held all air traffic
for this event, which, according to camp leaders, gave the children
a sense of relief and truly allowed them to express their grief.
Senior Airman Sara Skoog, shown on the right, mentors
the children by playing games, as well as talking to them
during grief sessions about the loss of their loved ones.
Airman Skoog is an Air Force Honor Guard member.
Courage is fear holding on a minute longer.”
Mentors, such as Sarah Skoog. are required to attend a
one-day class that covers tasks of grief, experiencing death
realistically, making a connection with a child, expressing
grief creatively, understanding military rituals, and helping
honor a loss. Also on hand are music and art therapists and
other professionals who teach how to better understand grief.
Peter Skoog, was very proud of his daughter, Sara. He brought
me The Bolling Aviator, the Air Force Base newspaper, which
featured the TAPS program in which Sara is a mentor. He asked me
if I would publish the story in the next Andover Hometown News.
Unfortunately, Peter passed away three weeks later, on
August 23. Although he is not here to read this, I am
pleased to fulfill his wish. He and his wife, Elinor, and
Sarah’s mom Brenda, raised an incredibly warm, caring
person, and the town of Andover is equally proud of her.
ANDOVER RESIDENTS
TO THE RESCUE
Dianne Grenier, President,
Andover Friends of the Library
The weekend of August 24 and
25 was a busy time at the Library
as the new carpet was installed.
Funds from a grant (no tax dollars)
were used to replace the old and worn carpet which
was 15 years old and truly in need of replacement.
All the books, furniture, and computer equipment had to
be moved out of the way. A call went out to residents and
the move started Friday night with 60 residents moving
half the Library contents to one side. Saturday morning
the carpet installers carpeted that half. Residents then
moved everything to the newly carpeted half. The carpet
installers finished laying the carpet and the residents came
back at 6 p.m. to put things back where they belonged.
The Library staff came on Monday morning to put
the finishing touches to the final details. The Library
was opened to the public at 3 p.m. Wow, what a job!
This was no easy task. The big bookcases and circulation
desk were very heavy and there were plenty of books to
move by forming human chains. But it was made easier
with lots of helping hands, big muscles, and smiling faces
all pitching in on a hot August day for the love of their
Library and community. There were men and women,
boys and girls from age 4 to over 80. Several teenage boys
saved the day with their muscles and willing attitudes.
more new and exciting improvements
are planned for the Library in the
THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING
Dianne Grenier, Norton Commission Member
Chester D. Norton was an Andover farmer who died 116 years
ago on October 14, 1891. Local legend has it that when Chester
was a child his poor family could not afford the eyeglasses he
needed and a kindly gentleman provided the family with funds
for Chester’s eyeglasses. Many years later when making his
will Chester remembered his poor childhood and that act of
kindness. He left a legacy of his own that continues giving
to this very day. On October 3, 1891, just 11 days before his
death, he signed his will that specified $3,000 to be left for
the poor children of Andover. One hundred and sixteen years
after his death the interest income from these funds continue to
help the children of Andover who Chester D. Norton so loved.
At the July 22,1937 town meeting, a six-member Norton
Children’s Fund Commission was set up to expend the yearly
income from the Norton Fund..The number of Commission
members was reduced from six to five in 2001 to conform to
the terms of the newly established Town Charter. Members
currently serving on the Norton Children’s Commission
are: Betsy Houle (Chairman), Heidi Donnelly, Heidi
Xenophontos, Cathy Campen, and Dianne Grenier.
You have a choice.
The Norton Children’s Fund Commission meets twice
a year to expend the interest income from the Norton
Children’s Fund in accordance with Chester D. Norton’s
will: once in time for the start of the school year, for back-toschool
supplies; and again, just prior to the holiday season.
Over the years these funds have provided Andover children
with items such as; cod liver oil, tonsillectomies, shoes,
rubbers, slippers, eyeglasses, eye exams, dental work,
backpacks, and small scholarships for continual education.
Only the interest income from the Norton Children’s Fund
is expended. Over the years additional funds have been
added to the original principal by generous donors. In 1995
the Irene Mooney Children’s Fund was created by Rodney
Mooney in memory of his beloved wife, and the Norton
Children’s Fund Commission was charged with administrating
these funds as well for the needy children of Andover.
Over the years the interest rate for these funds has
fallen but not the need. This year the need is as great as
ever. If you would like to make a donation to the Norton
Children’s Fund that can be used to bring joy to an
Andover child this Christmas or to make a contribution
to the Norton Children’s Fund principal, your check
can be sent to: Norton Commission, c/o Andover Town
ANDOVER ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL
Dr. David H. Griffin
Principal/Director
Another successful year came to a close on June 20. The
evening before, forty-eight sixth graders participated in the
traditional Step-Up ceremony commemorating their completion
of elementary school. Those students will now move on to
RHAM Middle School. It was an evening of mixed emotions.
The students stood proud, ready and able to take the next
academic step in their learning careers. Their parents beamed
with pride and, more than once, a glistening tear could be
seen slowly dripping down a cheek. That sight, the tear, was
most noticeable when the students took single roses out to the
audience and gave them to their parents.
This year, the guest speakers came from the class of 2007.
Four students, Andrew Burke, Alicia Ritchie, Hannah Hyatt,
and Melissa Kratochvil, were chosen to deliver the Step-Up
address with speeches that they had written. Their words were
well received by students and guests alike. A warm evening to
say the least, Mr. Linddy and Mr. Maneggia congratulated the
students for their many successes at Andover Elementary and
challenged them to “shine” as Andover stars in their next
six years at RHAM.
SUPERINTENDENT AWARD/PRESIDENTIAL
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD
Superintendent’s Award and also the Presidential Academic
Excellence Award!
Blake Apatow, Adam Bednarz, Adam Graefe, Nicolette
were likewise designated as having achieved the Presidential
Academic Excellence Award!
Achievement Awards in four areas were awarded to students
displayed the specific characteristic:
Most Positive Outlook: Jacob St. Jean
Most Improved: John Colli
Most Citizenship: Katherine Wood
Most Effort: Kyle Rodegher
From June to August 29, the time just breezed by. Students
and renewed enthusiasm to start the new school year. It was
a smooth opening, thanks to the dedication and hard work by
We are a debt relief agency. We help people file for relief under the bankruptcy code
our office staff, custodians, and teachers who always seem to
be here. Throughout the summer, most of the teachers were at
school setting up their rooms and preparing for the next 183
school days. The building is sparkling after the hard work
our custodians put in this summer, which included moving
and rebuilding a total of thirteen rooms. The gym floor was
refinished and new wall mats and bleachers have been added.
The driveway and parking lots have been resealed and relined.
The basketball court was regraded and resurfaced over the
summer. Now, the upper playground can be used for the fifth
and sixth grade recess. By the end of last year, the fourth,
fifth and sixth grade classrooms were outfitted with smart
boards.
NEW STAFF AT AES
Please join in welcoming several new staff members to
Andover Elementary School. Mrs. Lisa Handfield is the
new half-time kindergarten teacher. She has a bachelor’s in
Elementary Education from Wheaton College and a master’s
in Early Childhood Education from Eastern Connecticut
State University. Ms. Stacy Mares has joined the special
education team as a half-time teacher. Her bachelor’s in
Psychology and master’s in Special Education are both from
Southern Connecticut State University. Ms. Melissa Correia
has joined the sixth grade team and holds a bachelor’s in
History and Social Science and Elementary Education.
She will receive her master’s in Reading and Language
Arts from St. Joseph College in December. Mr. Darin
D’Amaddio, LCSW, is the new Social Worker assigned to
Andover Elementary from AHM. He will be here all day on
Fridays. His bachelor’s in Psychology and master’s in Social
Work are both from the University of Connecticut.
Mrs. Cheryl Folsom is our new Food Service Manager.
TWO SESSIONS OF PRESCHOOL
Thanks to the hard work of Dr. Zeuschner and Ms. Labenski
in writing a grant and the support of Mr. Maneggia and the
Board of Education, Andover Elementary now has two
sessions of preschool, accommodating all the students who
had been placed on a waiting list. As of October 5, both
sessions will run five days a week instead of the traditional
four days. This is due to the requirements stipulated in the
grant. What a great opportunity for the preschoolers of
Andover! Next year, the classes will be divided into a threeyear-old
group and a four-year-old group.
