Tutorial /Assignment 1-Fluid Power Control (B Batch)- S6ME
1. Air at 20 deg C and atmospheric pressure has a density of 1.23 kg/m 3 . Find specific gravity. What
is the ratio of the specific gravity of water divided by the specific gravity of air at 20 deg C and
atmospheric pressure? What is the significance of this ratio?
2. A cylindrical container has a diameter if 0.5m and a height of 1m. if it is to be filled with a liquid
having a specific weight of 2000 N/m 3 , how many kg of this liquid must be added.
3. A liter of SAE30 oil weighs 8.70 N. calculate the oil’s – specific weight, density and specific gravity.
4. A tank truck contains 125000 liters of hydraulic fluid having a specific gravity of 0.9. Determine
the fluid’s specific weight, density and weight.
5. For the fluid power automobile lift system of Figure 1.0 the hydraulic piston has a 250mm
diameter. How much of oil pressure (KPa) is required to lift a 13,300 N automobile.
6. In hydraulic system press shown in Figure 2.0 , a force of 100 N is exerted on the small piston,
Determine the upward force on the large piston, The area of the small piston is 50 cm 2 and area of the
larger piston is 500 cm 2 . If small piston moves 10cm, how far will the large piston move?. Assume oil to
be incompressible.
7. For the fluid power automobile lift system of Figure 3.0, the air pressure equals 550 KPa gage. If
the hydraulic piston has a 250mm diameter, what is the maximum weight of an automobile that can be
lifted?. The specific gravity of the oil is 0.9 . what percentage error in the answer to this problem occurs
by ignoring the 1m head of oil to between the air and oil interface surface and bottom surface of the
piston?
8. A 500 cm 3 sample of air to be compressed in a cylinder until its pressure is increased from 1 atm
to 50 atm. If the bulk modulus equals 1750 MPa, find the percent change in volume of air.
9. A 1.0 lb force moves a piston inside a cylinder at a velocity of 10 ft/s as shown in Figure 4.0.The 4
inch diameter piston is centrally located in the 4.004 inch inside diameter cylinder. An oil film separates
the piston from the cylinder. Find the absolute viscosity of the oil.
10. A sample of oil with Viscosity Index of 70 is tested with a 0-VI oil and 100-VI oil whose viscosity
values at 100 F are 375 and 125 SUS, respectively. What is the viscosity of the sample oil at 100 F in
units of SUS?
