Translation 516 <strong>Vessantara</strong>-Jåtaka<br />
[Fausbøll, Jåtaka, vol. VI, p. 516]<br />
"Now welcome, welcome, mighty k<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> with no doubtful voice:<br />
Be lord of all that here is found, <strong>and</strong> use it at your choice.<br />
Take herbs, roots, honey, meat, <strong>and</strong> rice, the whitest <strong>and</strong> the best:<br />
Enjoy it at your will, O k<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> you shall be our guest."<br />
<strong>Vessantara</strong> said:<br />
"Your proffered gifts I here accept, with thanks for your goodwill.<br />
But now the k<strong>in</strong>g has banished me; I go to Vaṁka hill.<br />
I pray you, tell me of a place to be my dwell<strong>in</strong>g still."<br />
The pr<strong>in</strong>ces said:<br />
"Stay here <strong>in</strong> Ceta, mighty k<strong>in</strong>g, until a message go<br />
To tell the k<strong>in</strong>g of Sivi l<strong>and</strong> what we have come to know."<br />
Then they beh<strong>in</strong>d him <strong>in</strong> a throng escort<strong>in</strong>g him did go,<br />
All full of joy <strong>and</strong> confidence: this I would have thee know."<br />
The Great Be<strong>in</strong>g said:<br />
"I would not have you send <strong>and</strong> tell the k<strong>in</strong>g that I am here:<br />
He is not k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this affair: he has no power, I fear.<br />
The palace folk <strong>and</strong> townsfolk all <strong>in</strong> wrath came gather<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
All eager that because of me they might destroy the k<strong>in</strong>g."
