Translation 591 <strong>Vessantara</strong>-Jåtaka<br />

They brought a f<strong>in</strong>e young elephant, a mighty <strong>and</strong> a strong,<br />

Which neither spear nor battle d<strong>in</strong> could fright, whose tusks were long.<br />

She mounts upon the elephant, so mighty <strong>and</strong> so strong,<br />

Which neither spear nor battle d<strong>in</strong> could fright, whose tusks were long."<br />

So they two <strong>in</strong> great pomp proceeded to the camp. K<strong>in</strong>g Sañjaya <strong>and</strong> his <strong>in</strong>numerable<br />

host 1 amused themselves <strong>in</strong> hill sports <strong>and</strong> woodl<strong>and</strong> sports for a whole month. Dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that time, by the Great Be<strong>in</strong>g's glory, no hurt was done <strong>in</strong> all that great forest by wild<br />

beast or bird. The Master thus expla<strong>in</strong>ed it:<br />

"By glory of <strong>Vessantara</strong>, through all that mighty wood,<br />

No beast or bird did any harm to the others, all did good.<br />

And when he was to go away, they all with one consent,<br />

Birds, beasts, <strong>and</strong> all the creatures of the wood, together went:<br />

But silent were all pleasant sounds when he had left the wood."<br />
