Translation 589 <strong>Vessantara</strong>-Jåtaka<br />

The women then bathed Maddī, <strong>and</strong> all together pray—<br />
"<strong>Vessantara</strong> <strong>and</strong> Sañjaya preserve you all alway!"<br />
Thus reestablished, <strong>and</strong> their past trouble remember<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
There <strong>in</strong> the pleasant master's l<strong>and</strong> they made a merry cheer.<br />

Happy <strong>and</strong> glad the lady went with her own children dear."<br />
So <strong>in</strong> happ<strong>in</strong>ess she said to her children:<br />
"I only ate one meal a day, I slept upon the ground,<br />
That was my vow for love of you until you should be found.<br />
But now my vow is brought to pass, <strong>and</strong> now aga<strong>in</strong> I pray,<br />
What good so ever we have done preserve you both alway,<br />
And may the great k<strong>in</strong>g Sañjaya preserve you both alway<br />
What good so ever has been done by father or by me,<br />
By that truth grow thou never old, immortal do thou be."
