Translation 560 <strong>Vessantara</strong>-Jåtaka<br />

My children must be dead! the place so silent has become—<br />

The very ravens do not caw, the very birds are dumb."<br />

Lament<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this fashion, she came up to the Great Be<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> set down the basket of<br />

fruit. See<strong>in</strong>g him sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> silence, <strong>and</strong> no children with him, she said:<br />

"Why art thou silent? how that dream comes to my thought aga<strong>in</strong>:<br />

The birds <strong>and</strong> ravens make no sound, my children must be sla<strong>in</strong>!<br />

O sir, have they been carried off by some wild beast of prey?<br />

Or <strong>in</strong> the deep deserted wood have they been led astray?
