Translation 558 <strong>Vessantara</strong>-Jåtaka<br />

A k<strong>in</strong>g my father, <strong>and</strong> a queen my mother—hear my cry!<br />
Be brothers now <strong>in</strong> righteousness, <strong>and</strong> let me safe go by!"<br />
Then the gods, observ<strong>in</strong>g the time, saw that it was time to let her go; <strong>and</strong> they rose up <strong>and</strong><br />
departed. The Master expla<strong>in</strong>ed it thus:<br />
"The beasts that heard her thus lament with great exceed<strong>in</strong>g woe,<br />
In voice of sweet <strong>and</strong> gentle sound, went off <strong>and</strong> let her go."<br />
When the beasts had departed, she returned to the hermitage. Now it was the night of the<br />
full moon; <strong>and</strong> when she came to the end of the covered walk, where she had been used<br />
to see her children, <strong>and</strong> saw them not, she cried out:
