Translation 543 <strong>Vessantara</strong>-Jåtaka<br />

[Fausbøll, Jåtaka, vol. VI, p. 543]<br />

"Now tell me what may be the cause, what can the reason be,<br />

That br<strong>in</strong>gs you to this mighty wood? I pray you tell it me."<br />

Jūjaka said:<br />

"As a great water-flood is full, <strong>and</strong> fails not any day,<br />

So you, from whom I come to beg—give me your children, pray!"<br />

On hear<strong>in</strong>g this, the Great Be<strong>in</strong>g was delighted <strong>in</strong> heart; <strong>and</strong> said, like one who sets <strong>in</strong> the<br />

outstretched h<strong>and</strong> a purse of a thous<strong>and</strong> pieces of money: 1<br />

"I give, <strong>and</strong> shr<strong>in</strong>k not: you shall be their master. But my queen<br />

Went out this morn<strong>in</strong>g for our food; at even<strong>in</strong>g she'll be seen.<br />

Stay here this night: the morn<strong>in</strong>g light shall see you on your way.<br />

She'll wash them <strong>and</strong> perfume them both, 2 <strong>and</strong> garl<strong>and</strong> them with flowers.<br />

Stay here this night: the morn<strong>in</strong>g light shall see you on your way.<br />

Deckt out with flowers they both shall be, with scents <strong>and</strong> perfumes sweet;<br />

Take them away, <strong>and</strong> plenty take of fruits <strong>and</strong> roots to eat."<br />
