“A New Heart: Life in
Apostolic Community”
18 JULY 2014 No. 20
Dear Parents
All are back, recharged and looking forward to a fantastic semester. I hope all
students and teachers are enthusiastic and excited. We only have one life – we
should enjoy it as it is God’s gift to us.
PAYING A VISIT
A traditional Catholic devotion is to pay a visit to a Church or Chapel and to spend
perhaps two minutes there with the Lord. We are reviving this practice at Iona and
encouraging the staff, students and parents to pay a visit.
Why not pop into the Chapel and soak up the peace of the Lord’s presence and put
your life and that of your family into his hands next time you are at Iona?
OFFICIAL OPENING AND BLESSING OF NEW BUILDINGS
One of the really significant events that can gather us as a community at Iona is the opening of our two
new buildings, the Art Precinct and the Industrial Design and Technology Centre.
On Sunday 31 August, the community celebrates with great joy the new facilities that are going to
provide so well for Iona students over many, many more years. We will give public recognition to our
work and to the State Government’s support for our project.
Picture this: over one thousand people gathering to pray, see the facilities and to enjoy each other’s
company. It is going to be a great day. We gather at 9.00 am for Mass of Dedication at 9.30 am and
the official speeches and the blessing will follow immediately. Then is our opportunity to explore the
new buildings. They are magnificent – I want to re-enrol as a student so that I can use them. Then we
have our picnic lunch/platters in the quadrangle while musicians play and our children are engaged on
the ovals.
Come and be part of a great event. See the attached flyer for more details.
STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAYS
The third week of the holidays was a staff professional
development time. Some of the work was administrative –
preparing reports and so on. More importantly, we also
designed some worthwhile Habits lessons and had a full day
with an external facilitator during which we were enthused
about creating a positive culture with positive relationships with
students. On the Friday, we went off-campus for a full day’s
retreat. A highlight of this was a talk by the Archbishop, Mark
Coleridge, on listening with the ears of the heart.
COMPUTER SYSTEMS REVIEW
We are reviewing our core systems as MAZE, our current administration software, is reaching its end-of
-life. Mr Justin Toon, our Director of ICT, has guided us through a process that will result in a product
that has a parent portal, an appropriate scale of operation, good support, will provide as integrated a
product as possible, has web-based functionality and is an established product.
We plan to implement this late this year so as to provide as seamless a transition as possible. We
know that there will be some teething problems and that these will sometimes be a source of irritation
for parents. I apologise for this but, as MAZE will no longer be supported, we have no choice. I ask for
your patience.
MAX GOENER – 2 ND IN ROSTRUM VOICE OF YOUTH STATE FINAL
On Saturday 6 July, the Rostrum Voice of Youth Queensland State Final was
held at the Parliamentary Annex. After numerous heats and finals, Max Goener
and Edward Little were chosen out of an initial pool of six hundred and sixty-five
entrants to compete at this prestigious level. Edward Little was unable to
compete but Max Goener represented Iona with distinction and polish.
It was a very strong and competitive field of seven and I had the privilege of
watching Max compete. He performed exceptionally well in both the prepared
and impromptu. Max obtained 2 nd in Queensland in the senior category and we
are very proud of him. I thank Miss Costa, Mrs Harrison, Mr Collyer and Mrs
Murray for their work with all who do secondary school public speaking at Iona.
AUSTRALIAN VOCATIONAL STUDENT PRIZE
From a large number of high quality nominations, the Australian Government selected five hundred
winners to receive a prize for 2013. Two of the three Iona students nominated for this award were
successful. We congratulate Old Boys Max Von Richter and Thomas Borthwick who will receive a
certificate and $2000. I also congratulate Old Boy Mitchell Wiffler, who, while unsuccessful in obtaining
this prize, was an excellent candidate put forward by the College. I congratulate Mr Balczun and the
ID&T staff and thank them for their work.
IONA AT NATIONAL TEAM SAILING CHAMPIONSHIPS
During the holidays, seven Iona boys, Mr Ricketts, and Old Boy Tim
Robba competed in the Australian National Schools Team Racing
Sailing Championships in Sydney. Mr Dutton, president of the Iona
Sailing Supporters contacted me to let me know that during the week the
boys, both on and off the water, were a credit to the College.
Whilst not everything went our way on the water, the students
demonstrated true sportsmanship never blaming any individual and
always accepting the umpires decisions. Off the water the boys bonded
well as a team, with every activity from breakfast to dinner including
every single member of the team. Our tour Captain, Trevor Koreman,
showed great leadership qualities in bringing the team together.
Our boys finished 14 th in Australia, a very creditable result. On behalf of
the College, I thank Mr Andrew Ricketts and Mr Tim Robba for taking the
time to commit to the boys and the Iona sailing program.
SINGAPORE MUSIC TRIP
The tour to Singapore by our Music Department went sensationally well.
Twelve students from each of Mazenod, Victoria and Lourdes Hill joined
thirty-eight of our boys in a program which included five performances
(four in schools and one public performance), lots of practice and loads
of sightseeing. The tourism included Universal Studios, the laser light
show, Changi Prison, the zoological and botanical gardens, the Indian
and Muslim quarters and much more.
The highlight for our wonderful staff, Mr Francis, Mrs Corkeron, Miss
McConaghy, Mr Stevens and Mr King was the students’ behaviour and
co-operation. The senior students organised and cared for junior
students, especially around setting up, packing up and rehearsing. The
Music Department have a great culture around this. I thank the
students, staff and parents for enabling this opportunity for our students.
JAPANESE EXCHANGE STUDENTS
Twenty students and staff from our brother school, Kamakura Gakuen,
will be arriving at the college next Monday afternoon. They are being
hosted by twenty of our families of Japanese studying students and
return to Japan on Saturday 2 August. The students have their own
English lessons for the majority of each day. Other lessons are spent
with the various Japanese classes across the Junior and Senior school.
We are very grateful to the Iona families who are hosting these students
and making this opportunity possible for them and for us.
THE IONA SLEEP OUT EXPERIENCE
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be freezing, hungry
and lonely? Every year some of our Year 12 boys go out on the streets
to help the homeless through Rosies. However, it is not easy to
understand the experience of the people we meet and befriend. Also,
not all students can have the opportunity to go out on the streets.
An initiative of our student leadership, through vice-captain Brian King, is
for Iona to hold a sleep out experience, to give Ionians the opportunity to
experience what it would be like to be homeless for one night. The
experience will be open for boys in Years 10 – 12 with further details
being announced early next term. This may be one of those life shaping
experiences through which we grow as people and understand what it is
like to be homeless for one night.
The initial Iona Sleep Out will be on Saturday 2 August between 6.00 pm
and 7.00 am. Click on the following link for more details http://
MAZENOD COLLEGE (MELBOURNE) HOST JORDAN’S
NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM
I congratulate Mazenod College, Victoria, on being chosen to host the
Jordan national football team for a fifteen day pre-competition camp as
part of training preparations for AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015.
Mazenod is the only school to be a pre-competition training base for a
national team . “Jordan’s decision to choose Mazenod is a great vote of
confidence in our community, and demonstrates the hard work and
positivity of our bid and that we provide a welcoming and world class
facility,” Rector Fr Michael Twigg O.M.I. said.
Jordan plays two games in Melbourne against recent qualifier Palestine
on January 16 and defending champions Japan on January 20. Their
third game is in Brisbane on January 12 against Iraq. I am sure that
many of us will be able to support Jordan as our second team – our first
team being Australia.
CHANGED TRAFFIC CONDITIONS
I thank you all for your patience as we complete the front drive. You
have been wonderful. The gravel car park will be back in operation next
Monday and may again be used for pick-ups and drop-offs.
Also, you will have noticed we have extended the pick-up zone between
Davine and McCarthy Ovals. This provides for a faster loading of cars
and shorter pick-ups and drop-offs.
I am grateful to all our drivers for your tolerance and generosity to other
drivers. This makes this daily chore a safer and much more pleasant
experience for everyone.
G20 PUBLIC HOLIDAY
The Department of Education, Training and Employment (DETE) have
requested that QCEC pass on a reminder to schools in the Brisbane
area of the G20 public holiday. The declared public holiday is on Friday
14 November, 2014 and is in place to ease the impact on the city and
help minimise any potential disruptions to the G20 Summit.
The public holiday determination is based on a person’s place of work/
school, not their place of residence. The college will be closed on this
day.
DEPARTING STAFF
Mrs Anna Roberts, our Foundation Manager, has accepted a position at
Somerville House and will leave us at the end of next week. She leaves
us after seven years and, with Fr Peter Daly O.M.I. and the Foundation
Directors, has shaped what our Foundation looks like.
Central to Anna’s work has been the engagement of our
community. Anna has been a key driver in our events, the Davine
Dinner, the Race Day, the Sherman Lunch, which are very elegant and
extremely enjoyable. Through her work with In Hoc we have reached
out to a wider community, especially Old Boys. She has also established
the Foundation data base, which is so important to this position. Also,
Anna has driven our fundraising campaigns and raised our community’s
awareness of philanthropic giving for bursaries, library services and
facilities at Iona. Our event sponsorship program and the business club
functions, which were organised by her, have also supported these
goals. A highlight of Anna’s time for me is the series of successful
campaigns Iona had to support the purchase of the Lindum property.
Anna has always been incredibly loyal, creative and has always got the
job done. We are grateful for her time with us and wish her all the best
for the future.
OMAD (OBLATE MISSION ACTION DAY)
One of the great Iona College traditions, going back for many years, is
raising funds for those in the developing world. This is an important
opportunity for a Catholic school which is forming young men to make a
difference. Last year, we raised $53,000, which was a magnificent and
generous effort. This significant amount really made a difference to
some of those who need it the most.
This year OMAD will be held on Tuesday 12 August. I invite you and
your family to support this as enthusiastically as you did last year.
LEARNING AND TEACHING
While Iona’s students were enjoying their third week of holidays, our
teachers were participating in a week of professional development. This
week is important for us as a College as it allows our teaching staff to
meet together in faculty and year groups, to reflect on curriculum and
pedagogy and to design units of work with the Habits of Mind
embedded.
However, this week is just a small part of the professional development
that occurs within our community and it is the training that occurs
throughout the year that forms the most important part of our teachers’
growth. We have a professional, dedicated and hard-working team of
teachers who are committed to getting the best outcomes for our
students. Over the last two years, we have worked hard strengthening
our learning community based on improving student outcomes. All our
teachers participate in fortnightly development sessions where they
reflect on their impact on student learning and discuss and debate what
effective learning looks like. Outside of these sessions, we have seen a
huge increase in the amount of collaboration that occurs, and we have
really enjoyed overhearing informal conversations where teachers are
talking about the learning occurring in their classrooms, critiquing their
own practices and reflecting on their impact.
We have also introduced classroom walk throughs as an opportunity for
professional development. These are informal visits that allow
leadership staff to affirm what teachers are doing, to celebrate
successes in teaching and learning and to exert informed effort and
energy to assist teachers to grow. All teachers are also engaged in
classroom visits to observe student learning and to provide feedback.
During our professional development week, we reflected on the
feedback we’ve gathered as a result of these observations. Two of the
common themes to emerge were an acknowledgement of the mutual
respect between our teachers and students and the high levels of
student engagement in the classroom. Given we know that positive
teacher-student interactions are one of the most essential factors in
effective learning, it is heartening to have overwhelming confirmation of
this within our community.
ASG NATIONAL EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARDS
Can I please encourage parents and caregivers to publicly recognise
families who use Bulgin Ave to only stop in this zone. Vehicles must not
stop near the entrance to Bulgin Ave. Please also be mindful of vehicles
following you and during busy periods of the morning and afternoon,
please use the lower end of the zone. These procedures are put in
place to ensure the safety of our students.
performers. They worked well together and with the other schools
involved in the tour. Our ensembles performed magnificently and were
warmly accepted by the Singapore schools and their students. Thank
you gents for your wonderful contribution and also a big thanks to Mr
King, Mr Stevens, Mrs Corkeron and Miss McConaghy for your hard
work in making the tour such a success. We will publish photos in
COLLEGE PRODUCTION
SAILING
In the second week of the boys vacation our Iona Sailing Club ventured
south to Rose Bay on Sydney Harbour to contest the National
championships of schools teams racing. Along with twenty-three other
schools from every state we were hosted by the wonderful people of
the Woollahra Sailing Club and our thanks go to Mr Adam South
manager of sailing at the club for the smooth, efficient and enjoyable
regatta.
Just on two hundred races were conducted under blue skies and cool
but pleasant weather with the ‘coat-hanger’ as a backdrop. Our boys
started in fine style with four wins from four races on day one, only to
be brought down to earth with a reverse identical ratio of win/loss in all
five races the next day. By regatta’s end we had finished with seven
wins and seven losses to be the 14 th best school from the 24 elite
teams selected to compete in this the 25 th national schools
championships. Our congratulations go to the winners, Christ Church
Grammar School from Perth.
This is the 5 th time Iona has competed in this event and with all in our
team eligible for one or more tilts at the ultimate prize, we are a great
chance at making 2015 our 6 th visit. We take nothing for granted, but
with the regatta to be on home waters at Southport, we are very keen
to be there again.
Our parents committee president Mr Gary Dutton and Old Boy Tim
Robba were magnificent in their support on and off the water over the
entire seven days. As for driving in Sydney, I would literally have been
lost without them. To Mrs Sue von Richter, your organisational talents
and support cannot be overstated, thank you again.
To the boys, you – despite your music ‘tastes’- were great to be with.
You kept up your spirits, listened to your coaches, took it all in and I
know from what Tim has said, this was an excellent learning
experience. You will all be much better sailors as a consequence.
Your team spirit impacted on the organisers, they marvelled at what a
tight knit group you were. Pass on this spirit to your fellow sailors.
Finally, thank you to Mr Ross King and Father Mark for the support the
college has shown.
TERM 3 SPORT
Welcome back to another hectic and exciting Term of Junior School Sport at Iona!
With football, rugby and cross country behind us, our attention turns to basketball,
tennis and athletics. Our athletics team will be looking to defend the CIC
Championship trophy for the 14 th consecutive year! This will undoubtedly be our
most challenging year and only hard work, dedication and commitment will ensure
success.
We have had a huge number of boys register interest in playing CIC basketball
and we will once again enter 12 teams into the CIC Competition. This is very
exciting and will no doubt add depth to an already strong program.
I encourage everyone in the Iona community to embrace the strong culture that
exists around Iona Sport by becoming involved in as many aspects as possible.
Best of luck for a successful and enjoyable Term 3.
INTERHOUSE TRACK AND FIELD CARNIVAL
The Junior School Interhouse Track and Field Carnival will be held this week over
a two day period.
In the final weeks of Term 2, all students were involved in a variety of track and
field trials. The times, distances and heights recorded last term have been used
to nominate each boy into the correct division in which they have been nominated
for their House.
The Track and Field Carnival is a compulsory event for all students and
formulates an important part of our overall Sports Program by helping to further
promote physical activity and school spirit. All students will be involved in at least
five events throughout the carnival.
A brief program of the carnival events is listed below for your information. Please
note that these times are used as a guide only and are subject to change on
the day.
Supporters:
We wish all the boys the best over the carnival period and both the staff and
students look forward to seeing as many supporters as possible in attendance to
encourage the boys. Parents and other spectators are most welcome to attend
the carnival. Limited seating will be available, however, bringing your own fold up
chair is advised.
Canteen:
The Sport Supporters Canteen will not be open this Friday. Boys are asked to
bring their own morning tea and drink bottle. The school canteen will be open as
usual and boys will be able to access this for lunch.
CIC Tennis will commence next weekend (Saturday 26 July). All fixtures are
played from 8.00 am — 11.30 am each Saturday morning. A full draw will be
posted on Moodle early next week. If players are unable to make certain games
throughout the season they must tell Ms Neech as soon as possible.
CIC BASKETBALL
Iona has entered four basketball teams per year level into the CIC competition.
Basketball is played on Friday afternoons after school.
All teams have been selected and students will be given an Iona singlet to use for
the season. There will be a hire charge of $15.00/season which will be added to
school fees. The boys are asked to take care of these singlets as damaged
singlets will need to be replaced at the original cost. Each player must wear the
Iona Basketball Singlet and the Iona Sports Shorts (not rugby shorts).
CIC BASKETBALL (cont’)
The Basketball Draw for the season will be available on Moodle early next week.
Buses have been organised to transport students to MOST away games.
Parents are welcome to meet their sons at the venues, however, if you are
unable to be there the bus will return your son to the College, usually around
6.00 pm — 6.30 pm.
In instances where our opposition do not have enough teams to cover all
matches vs Iona we will be playing against other schools in supplementary
matches. This has caused some difficulties in regards to transport. In some
cases parents will be asked to provide private transport to these venues.
We have made every effort to minimise the need for private transport.
A permission slip will be sent home each week to the teams playing away and
will need to be returned to the College prior to the game on Friday.
the developing world. Last year we raised an amazing $53,000. This year, OMAD will
be held on Tuesday 12 th August. On this day students will be participating in various
activities; such as, sporting competitions and musical events.
You can help in the following ways:
- Donate a $20 (iTunes or Coles) gift voucher that can be used as a prize.
- Donate any other suitable prizes. (electronics, sporting gear etc.)
- Bake a dozen cupcakes and drop them off on OMAD morning.
- Donate food items like cartons of soft water, water or bags of lollies.
