Directory of Indigenous and related mainstream evaluation 2002-2010 Attorney-General’s Department (AGD) Indigenous Law and Justice Program Evaluations Year: 2010 In August 2009 the Commonwealth Attorney-General the Hon Robert McClelland MP committed $2 million funding to evaluate the effectiveness of Indigenous law and justice programs under the National Indigenous Law and Justice Framework (the Framework). The purpose of the evaluations is to develop a strong body of evidence regarding the effectiveness of a range of justice programs in achieving the Goals set out in the Framework: Improvement in Australian justice systems so that they comprehensively deliver on the justice needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in a fair and equitable manner. Reduction in the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander offenders, defendants and victims within the criminal justice system. Ensuring that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples feel safe and are safe within their communities Increased safety and a reduction in offending within Indigenous communities by addressing alcohol and substance abuse Strengthened Indigenous communities through working in partnership with governments and other stakeholders to achieve sustained improvements in justice and community safety The first tranche of evaluations will focus on Indigenous youth and perpetrator programs. Prisoner Through-care Reviews Year: 2010 The Department will undertake an external review of 12 Indigenous prisoner through-care projects funded under the Indigenous Justice Program to assess their impact and effectiveness. The reviews will also suggest improvements at the individual project level and collectively at the jurisdiction level. This is part of the Department's review of all prisoner through-care projects funded under the Indigenous Justice Program. The 12 projects are located in Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. The reviews will ensure funded organisations provide targeted, intensive Indigenous prisoner through-care services. The reviews will also determine the most effective Australian Government funding and service delivery arrangements for each jurisdiction, including streamlining arrangements. The proposed consultancy is strategically significant and will contribute to the evidence of what works in relation to the COAG Closing the Gap Framework for the Safe Communities building block.
