In addition to the Graduate School (described on p. 8), UMUC<br />

also <strong>of</strong>fers the following programs.<br />

National Leadership Institute<br />

The National Leadership Institute (NLI) <strong>of</strong>fers a wide range <strong>of</strong><br />

noncredit programs and services designed to help managers and<br />

executives become more effective as leaders in their organizations<br />

and to help organizations enhance their overall leadership<br />

effectiveness. NLI programs and services are <strong>of</strong>fered to individuals<br />

through open enrollment and to organizations on a contractual<br />

basis. NLI programs include the Leadership Development<br />

Program and Foundations <strong>of</strong> Leadership, both <strong>of</strong>fered in association<br />

with the Center for Creative Leadership‚ the preeminent<br />

education and research institution devoted to the development<br />

<strong>of</strong> creative leadership and effective management. NLI also <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

an online leadership assessment program, designs training programs<br />

and consulting services to meet an organization’s unique<br />

leadership development needs, and provides executive coaching<br />

in highly individualized coaching sessions especially suitable for<br />

senior managers.<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Undergraduate Studies<br />

At the undergraduate level, UMUC <strong>of</strong>fers the Associate <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />

(for military servicemembers only), the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts, the<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science, and the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional and<br />

Technical Studies* degrees. Students may choose an academic<br />

major in accounting, Asian studies, biotechnology, business<br />

administration, communication studies, computer and information<br />

science, computer information technology, computer science,<br />

computer studies, criminal justice, English, environmental<br />

management, fire science, general studies, history, humanities,<br />

human resource management, information systems management,<br />

legal studies, management studies, marketing, psychology,<br />

and social science. Minors are available in accounting, African<br />

American studies, art, art history, Asian studies, biology, business<br />

administration, business law and public policy, business<br />

supply chain management, communication studies, computer<br />

studies, criminal justice, customer service management, economics,<br />

English, environmental management, finance, fire science,<br />

gerontology, government and politics, health care administration,<br />

history, human resource management, humanities, international<br />

business management, journalism, management studies,<br />

marketing, mathematical sciences, microbiology, natural science,<br />

psychology, sociology, speech communication, strategic and<br />

entrepreneurial management, and women’s studies.<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> these programs are available online. UMUC also <strong>of</strong>fers<br />

43 undergraduate certificates covering business and management,<br />

communications, computing and technology, gerontology,<br />

paralegal studies, and science and security; almost half are available<br />

online.<br />

Undergraduate students may take advantage <strong>of</strong> a number <strong>of</strong><br />

innovative credit options that can accelerate their progress<br />

toward their degree. These include Cooperative Education,<br />

which <strong>of</strong>fers credit for new learning in the workplace, and Prior<br />

Learning, which <strong>of</strong>fers credit for college-level learning acquired<br />

through previous life or work experience.<br />

Leadership for the Future<br />

The <strong>Maryland</strong> Higher Education Commission projects that by<br />

2011, one-third <strong>of</strong> all students enrolled in the <strong>University</strong> System<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> will be studying at UMUC. Since 1997, enrollments<br />

in UMUC’s online courses have grown almost 2,200 percent<br />

and are expected to continue to climb. Agreements with<br />

community colleges are also expanding with the introduction <strong>of</strong><br />

the new Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Technical and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Studies degree<br />

program. UMUC also plans to pilot a new associate’s to master’s<br />

degree program in secondary education to help the state meet its<br />

critical shortfall <strong>of</strong> secondary school teachers.<br />

Under the leadership <strong>of</strong> UMUC President Gerald A. Heeger,<br />

UMUC is taking the lead in higher education to enable students<br />

in <strong>Maryland</strong> and worldwide to reach their academic goals.<br />

* The BTPS degree currently is available only for students who have earned<br />

an Associate in Applied Science degree in biotechnology.<br />
