Master <strong>of</strong> Science in Telecommunications Management<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Science (MS) in telecommunications management is designed to provide<br />

the technical knowledge and management skills needed to plan, acquire, operate,<br />

and evaluate telecommunication systems. The program emphasizes critical management<br />

concepts, such as the structure and environment <strong>of</strong> the telecommunications industry,<br />

strategic planning, financial management, and quality improvement. In addition, the<br />

program <strong>of</strong>fers instruction specific to telecommunications in the following areas: data<br />

communication systems, local and wide area networking systems, satellite systems,<br />

wireless telecommunication systems, network management, the Internet, the complex<br />

process <strong>of</strong> hardware and s<strong>of</strong>tware acquisition from the standpoint <strong>of</strong> both the purchaser<br />

and the vendor, and the application <strong>of</strong> these topics to practical issues <strong>of</strong> telecommunications<br />

systems integration and management.<br />

Overview<br />

This degree program requires 36–39 credits and consists <strong>of</strong> five core courses, three<br />

technical specialization courses, three required systems courses, and one end-<strong>of</strong>program<br />

option.<br />

Decision-Pending Status<br />

Students may register for one <strong>of</strong> the following graduate courses before UMUC has<br />

received the <strong>of</strong>ficial transcript from the bachelor’s-degree-granting institution: TLMN<br />

602, TMAN 610, or TMAN 632. Students must receive an admission decision prior to<br />

subsequent enrollments.<br />

Technology Requirements<br />

Students pursuing a degree in any <strong>of</strong> the information technology fields (computer systems<br />

management, information technology, telecommunications management, and<br />

s<strong>of</strong>tware engineering) must have access to a computer and modem capable <strong>of</strong> supporting<br />

current s<strong>of</strong>tware. Such programs may require more than the minimum hardware<br />

and s<strong>of</strong>tware needed for basic online communication and study (listed on p. 31).<br />

In addition, students are also required to have access to a computer with the following<br />

features:<br />

■ At least 256 MB RAM (512 MB preferred)<br />

■ At least 5 GB disk space<br />

■ Windows 2000 or higher<br />

■ 56 KB modem or better (e.g., broadband)<br />

■ CD burner<br />

■ Telnet and FTP service (via their ISP)<br />
