Admission Procedures<br />

To apply for admission, students must complete a graduate<br />

admission application and pay the nonrefundable $50 fee.<br />

Applications for admission may be submitted by mail, by fax<br />

(to 301-985-7364), online, or in person. Deadlines for admission<br />

and registration are listed in the current Graduate Schedule<br />

<strong>of</strong> Classes. The admission form is available in the Enrollment<br />

Forms Packet at the back <strong>of</strong> this catalog, in the Graduate<br />

Schedule <strong>of</strong> Classes, and on the Web at www.umuc.edu/forms.<br />

To allow time for processing, applicants who wish to take advantage<br />

<strong>of</strong> touch-tone or Web registration must ensure that their<br />

applications reach Graduate Admissions at least one week before<br />

the touch-tone and Web registration deadlines.<br />

Determination <strong>of</strong> Residency for Tuition Purposes<br />

An initial determination <strong>of</strong> in-state or out-<strong>of</strong>-state status for<br />

tuition purposes is made when a student applies for admission.<br />

The determination made at that time remains in effect thereafter<br />

unless it is successfully challenged. The student is responsible for<br />

providing the information necessary to establish eligibility for<br />

in-state status. Official criteria for determining residency are in<br />

the chapter on <strong>University</strong> Policies.<br />

Information on tuition and fees may be found on p. 15.<br />

Readmission<br />

Students who have not enrolled in graduate classes at UMUC<br />

for more than a year must complete a new application for<br />

admission and pay another application fee.<br />

Students who were academically dismissed from the Graduate<br />

School will not be considered for readmission.<br />

International Applicants<br />

To be considered for admission, international students must<br />

present<br />

■ Official documents indicating successful completion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

equivalent <strong>of</strong> a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree.<br />

Applicants educated in countries other than the United<br />

States must have their <strong>of</strong>ficial transcripts evaluated by an<br />

independent evaluation service. The evaluation company<br />

will send a copy <strong>of</strong> the evaluation both to the applicant and<br />

to the Graduate School. For a transcript evaluation, students<br />

should contact directly one <strong>of</strong> the following independent<br />

companies, not affiliated with UMUC:<br />

■ Pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> English language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency.<br />

Applicants who have not received a bachelor’s degree from<br />

the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New<br />

Zealand, Commonwealth Caribbean, or English-speaking<br />

Canada must demonstrate English pr<strong>of</strong>iciency by submitting<br />

a minimum score <strong>of</strong> 580 on the Test <strong>of</strong> English as a<br />

Foreign Language (TOEFL) and a minimum score <strong>of</strong> 5 on<br />

the Test <strong>of</strong> Written English (TWE) to be eligible for admission.<br />

Applicants must arrange to have <strong>of</strong>ficial score reports<br />

sent directly from the testing agency to the Graduate<br />

School. Test scores must be less than two years old.<br />

■ Documentation <strong>of</strong> residency status.<br />

Applicants must provide a photocopy (front and back) <strong>of</strong><br />

either a permanent residency card, work authorization card,<br />

or the first page and visa page <strong>of</strong> a valid passport and Form<br />

I-94.<br />

International students seeking Form I-20 or IAP-66 must be<br />

granted admission three months before the semester start date to<br />

register for classes. International applicants not seeking Form I-20<br />

or IAP-66 may register for only one course in the decisionpending<br />

status while awaiting the <strong>of</strong>ficial transcript evaluation<br />

and <strong>of</strong>ficial TOEFL and TWE scores.<br />

Merely providing these documents does not ensure admission.<br />

An interview may also be required. Official transcript evaluation<br />

from the aforementioned independent companies must be submitted<br />

and evaluated before admission is considered.<br />
