UMUC now <strong>of</strong>fers an accelerated alternative route to teacher certification in <strong>Maryland</strong><br />

for career changers with bachelor’s degrees.<br />

The Resident Teacher Certification program includes 9 credits <strong>of</strong> coursework, which<br />

are completed through online study during a 14-week spring semester, a summer residential<br />

experience in a local school system, and one year <strong>of</strong> teaching in a UMUCapproved<br />

school. Successful candidates are eligible for immediate hire. Credits may be<br />

applied to the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Teaching or the Master <strong>of</strong> Education programs at<br />

UMUC.<br />

While participants complete their first year <strong>of</strong> teaching, they must also complete the<br />

state required reading courses. All candidates are assigned a mentor and also receive<br />

extensive support through membership in an electronic learning community. At the<br />

end <strong>of</strong> the first year, teachers who receive satisfactory evaluations may be eligible for the<br />

<strong>Maryland</strong> Standard Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Certificate I.<br />

Certification is available in biology, chemistry, computer science, earth/space science,<br />

elementary education, English as a second language, French, history, mathematics,<br />

physics, social studies, and Spanish.<br />

Program Requirements<br />

Admission to the program requires at least a 3.0 GPA overall and in the major field <strong>of</strong><br />

study, qualifying scores on the Praxis I and Praxis II (content knowledge) examinations,<br />

and an interview.<br />

Formats/Locations<br />

Classes in the Resident Teacher Certification program are currently <strong>of</strong>fered online. The<br />

practicum experience must take place in a UMUC-approved school.<br />

Grant Funding<br />

Grant funding for candidates interested in teaching in Prince George’s County Public<br />

Schools is currently available through MARCO (<strong>Maryland</strong>’s Alternative Route to<br />

Certification Options), a UMUC partnership with the <strong>Maryland</strong> State Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Education and Prince George’s County Public Schools. Candidates interested in applying<br />

directly to MARCO should visit the County’s Resident Teacher Certification Web<br />

site at www.residentteacherprogram.org.<br />
