Technology Systems Management (18 credits)<br />

The certificate in Technology Systems Management is available<br />

for students who are interested in the management <strong>of</strong> technology<br />

systems, but are not interested in pursuing a degree at the time.<br />

The design, development, or acquisition <strong>of</strong> modern complex<br />

systems requires skills and background in both technical and<br />

management topics. The certificate program provides a basic<br />

approach to systems management.<br />

Executive Certificate Programs<br />

The Executive Programs <strong>of</strong>fer a combination <strong>of</strong> online and<br />

classroom-based instruction.<br />

Chief Information Officer (24 credits)<br />

This 12-month executive program is <strong>of</strong>fered in partnership with<br />

the General Services Administration’s CIO <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Participants—high-performing government and private-sector<br />

IT pr<strong>of</strong>essionals—receive both a federal government and<br />

UMUC CIO Certificate. In addition, credits earned in this<br />

program may be applied toward a master’s degree. The CIO<br />

certificate program encompasses all competencies cited in the<br />

Information Technology Management and Reform Act<br />

(Clinger-Cohen) and identified by the federal CIO Council.<br />

These are all areas <strong>of</strong> management associated with the design,<br />

development, acquisition, implementation, planning, and maintenance<br />

<strong>of</strong> an organization’s information technology structure.<br />

This program is designed for<br />

■ Chief information <strong>of</strong>ficers and chief technology <strong>of</strong>ficers<br />

■ Senior information technology staff members and planners<br />

■ Consultants in the field <strong>of</strong> information technology<br />

Strategic Management <strong>of</strong> Technology and Innovation<br />

(12 credits)<br />

This six-month certificate is designed to provide participants<br />

with the critical skills needed to craft an integrated technology<br />

and business strategy plan for their organizations. Courses are<br />

delivered through a combination <strong>of</strong> classroom-based seminars<br />

and online study, and develop the principles, implications, and<br />

role <strong>of</strong> technology innovation in organizational development<br />

and global competition. Seminars build skills in corporate creativity<br />

and innovation, technology planning, capital finance and<br />

budgeting, marketing, and strategic management. Important,<br />

cutting-edge management techniques for business leaders are<br />

covered including activity-based costing, e-commerce, knowledge<br />

management, flexible product development, and the balanced<br />

scorecard. The certificate is designed for managers in both<br />

private- and public-sector organizations who wish to acquire the<br />

necessary skills and business expertise to identify ways to strategically<br />

improve their organizations’ performance and global<br />

competitiveness. All 12 credits in this certificate may be applied<br />

toward the Master <strong>of</strong> Science in technology management degree.<br />

This program is designed for<br />

■ CEOs, CFOs, directors, and general managers responsible<br />

for setting the vision and strategic objectives <strong>of</strong> their<br />

organizations<br />

■ Mid- to senior-level executives involved in the identification,<br />

development, and deployment <strong>of</strong> new technologies to<br />

gain strategic advantage<br />

■ Entrepreneurs and business development pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />

interested in private and corporate venturing<br />
