Having completed his research work he left<br />

the University a<strong>nd</strong> entered the Technical<br />

Service of the company von Roll. A<strong>nd</strong> from<br />

there he moved on to the Swiss Federal<br />

Office for Transports a<strong>nd</strong> was appointed<br />

head of the Ropeway Department after Fritz<br />

Winkler’s retirement.<br />

His professional activity was marked by his<br />

enthusiasm, his ambitions a<strong>nd</strong> zest, his<br />

commitment to a<strong>nd</strong> promotion of the technical<br />

development of ropeway installations<br />

a<strong>nd</strong> efforts made to improve administrative<br />

procedures, his openness for innovative<br />

ideas which made him spare no trouble to<br />

introduce a<strong>nd</strong> have accepted innovative<br />

ideas.<br />

While still at the University in 1978 he atte<strong>nd</strong>ed<br />

for the first time the annual meeting<br />

of technical supervisory authorities, ITTAB,<br />

which he atte<strong>nd</strong>ed regularly thereafter first<br />

as expert a<strong>nd</strong> in the years 1986 to 1996 as<br />

head of the Swiss delegation. He was<br />

known for the excellency of his technical<br />

contributions to ITTAB’S work.<br />

The lectures he delivered to ITTAB meetings,<br />

seminars or in other circumstances<br />

were imbued by his interest a<strong>nd</strong> awareness<br />

of the problems of the day a<strong>nd</strong> offered answers<br />

a<strong>nd</strong> solutions which have lost none of<br />

their validity till to-day.<br />

For ten years, from 1986 to 1996, he had<br />

served as member of the Management<br />

Committee a<strong>nd</strong> representative of the Swiss<br />

Federal Office for Transports . Ever since<br />

1986 he was also member of the O.I.T.A.F.<br />

committee n° 1. In either committee he<br />

made highly appreciated contributions to the<br />

committee’s work a<strong>nd</strong> discussions.<br />

The same holds true for his stimulating a<strong>nd</strong><br />

way-setting activity as member of CEN TC<br />

242 a<strong>nd</strong> his precious contributions to the<br />

European sta<strong>nd</strong>ardization.<br />

As for me, I must say, that Hans Rudolf<br />

Gassmann was definitely the most honest<br />

a<strong>nd</strong> most straightforward person I have met<br />

a<strong>nd</strong> worked with in my life. Whenever I<br />

talked with him the discussion was highly<br />

productive, innovative, direct a<strong>nd</strong> refreshing.<br />

His sense of humour a<strong>nd</strong> conviviality are<br />

two traits of his character none of us will<br />

ever forget.<br />

Dear Hansruedi, thank you for your commitment<br />

to O.I.T.A.F, we will keep you in<br />

everlasting memory.<br />

ACTIVITIES OF O.I.T.A.F. WORK<br />

COMMITTEES<br />

O.I.T.A.F. WORK COMMITTEE 1 : Ropeway<br />

engineering a<strong>nd</strong> technical recomme<strong>nd</strong>ations<br />

Chairman : Dipl. Ing. Dr. Peter Sedivy, Bu<strong>nd</strong>esministerium<br />

für Verkehr, Innovation u<strong>nd</strong><br />

Technologie<br />

Accepting an invitation exte<strong>nd</strong>ed by Norske<br />

Veritas the committee met for their seco<strong>nd</strong><br />

meeting of the year <strong>2003</strong> on September 15<br />

a<strong>nd</strong> 16 in Tro<strong>nd</strong>heim (N) 16 members of<br />

the committee a<strong>nd</strong> the committee’s interpreter<br />

Mrs. Renata Rassini Penso atte<strong>nd</strong>ed<br />

the meeting. The meeting addressed the<br />

only item of the age<strong>nd</strong>a, i.e. the discussion<br />

of hazard scenarios associated with the<br />

different components of a cableway installation.<br />

The tables of hazard scenaries drawn<br />

up by volunteering members of the committee<br />

were used as working documents for<br />

the discussion in Tro<strong>nd</strong>heim. By so doing<br />

the committee have by now completed the<br />

tables listing the hazard scenarios associated<br />

with a number of chosen components.<br />

Additional work needs to be done to draw<br />

up lists of hazards of components which<br />

have not yet been addressed by the committee.<br />

Considering the extent of work yet to be<br />

done the committee decided to hold three<br />

meetings in 2004. They also decided to<br />

compile tables of hazard scenarios associated<br />

with stations a<strong>nd</strong> the conveyance<br />

equipment of stations. On the other ha<strong>nd</strong><br />

the committee decided to neglect altogether<br />

electrical monitoring a<strong>nd</strong> safety devices or<br />

to ask another <strong>OITAF</strong> committee to describe<br />

hazard scenarios associated with electrical<br />

monitoring a<strong>nd</strong> safety devices.<br />

So far the committee have completed, except<br />

may be for a final editorial review or<br />

final discussion, the following chapters of<br />

the technical recomme<strong>nd</strong>ation<br />

Introduction, mechanical equipment of stations,<br />

suspensions, grips, tensioning devices,<br />

chairs, carriages, up-hill conveyance<br />

belts, evacuation equipment a<strong>nd</strong> drives<br />

The following parts of the technical recomme<strong>nd</strong>ation<br />

still require a thorough in depth<br />

discussion<br />

Ropes a<strong>nd</strong> e<strong>nd</strong> fixings, carrier trucks,<br />

brakes, stations a<strong>nd</strong> their conveyance<br />

equipment<br />

The committee chose to have their next<br />

meeting in Bregenz (A) on February 16 a<strong>nd</strong><br />
