When you first venture into eastern 

Idaho, you’ll notice the broad valley 

that stretches between the famed Teton 

Mountains on the east and the majestic 

Lemhi Range on the west. This open space 

surrounds the winding Snake River and is 

the heart of production of Idaho’s claim 

to fame—the Idaho potato. But it’s the 

nearby mountains that give this part of the 

state its scenic character. Eastern Idaho 

is a land where the snowcapped peaks of 

the Grand Tetons feed thundering waterfalls, 

glistening lakes, and free-flowing 

rivers. It is a place where elk and moose 

graze lazily in the grasslands, a spot where 

you can watch wild swans fly and eagles 

soar. It is an accessible area that remains 

uncompromised to this day. The region 

has always attracted adventurers, from 

Andrew Henry, who established Fort Henry 

in 1811 near the town of St. Anthony, to 

today’s backcountry trekkers. As a neighbor 

to the Yellowstone and Grand Teton 

National Parks, it shares much of the same 

spectacular beauty and awesome adventure—but 

without the crowds. Stop in at a

Idaho Falls 

Idaho Falls, once known as Eagle Rock, 

is the hub and the largest city in eastern 

Idaho, so it’s a great place to use as 

a base from which to explore the beauty 

around you. The Snake River runs 

through Idaho Falls and is paralleled by 

a popular greenbelt. On the east side 

of the Snake River, you’ll see one of the 

city’s landmark buildings—the impressive 

LDS temple, which welcomes visitors. 

On the opposite bank, you’ll find 

Idaho Falls’ hotel row. In between are 

the man-made falls on the Snake River, 

which gave the city its name. 

Downtown Idaho Falls is encircled by 

beautifully landscaped neighborhoods, 

more than 1,200 acres of parks, four 

golf courses, and an indoor aquatic center. 

Be sure to see the inspiring Idaho 

Vietnam Memorial along the river, off 

Fremont Street. Idaho Falls is emerging 

as a cultural heart of the region with 

the outstanding 135,000-square-foot 

Museum of Idaho, which presents 

Idaho Falls history and national-caliber 

traveling exhibits. Visit the Willard Arts 

Center, the Eagle Rock Art Museum, 

and the newest museum—the Art Museum 

of Eastern Idaho—for an inclusive 

cultural experience. Theatergoers will 

enjoy live productions at the Colonial 

Theater, the Actors Repertory Theatre of 

Idaho, and The Centre Theater. Adding 

to the blend are art galleries featuring 

glass and ceramics, dance studios, and 

the Idaho Falls Library. For the kids, 

there’s the Tautphaus Park Zoo, home 

to 300-plus animals from more than six 

continents. 

From Idaho Falls, you’ll have many 

tempting directions in which to explore. 

Highway 26 eastbound will take you 

along the scenic south fork of the 

Snake River, popular for drift boat fishing, 

toward the Teton Scenic Byway and 

into the shadow of the towering Grand 

Teton Mountains. Or go north on Highway 

20 through the communities of 

Rexburg, Ashton, and Island Park, and 

then on to Yellowstone National Park. 

Head west on Highway 20 toward the 

Idaho National Laboratory to see the 

historical site of EBR-1, America’s first 

experimental breeder reactor.

Snake River 

Interstate 15 continues from eastern 

Idaho over Monida Pass into Montana, 

passing through Dubois and Spencer 

along the way. Spencer is the only 

place in North America where opals are 

plentiful enough to mine commercially. 

Several opal mines are open spring 

through fall, and visitors can search for 

gems themselves or just browse in the 

gift shops and take home a little gem 

from Idaho. 

Rigby and Rexburg 

If you are heading to Yellowstone National 

Park, be sure to stop in Rigby to 

learn about the invention of television 

at the Farnsworth TV and Pioneer Museum, 

which houses more than 14,000 

square feet of pre-electric and early 

electric-era exhibitions. The museum 

honors former resident and inventor of 

the first television picture tube, Philo T. 

Farnsworth, who developed his initial 

ideas for the electronic transmission of 

images while in high school in Rigby.

Families traveling with children will not 

want to miss Yellowstone Bear World, 

five miles south of Rexburg. It’s the 

area’s only drive-through wildlife preserve, 

where you can see grizzly bears, 

black bears, gray wolves, and many 

other species in a natural, open setting 

spring through fall. Guided tours are 

available, and a gift shop offers bear 

and wildlife items. 

About half an hour north of Idaho Falls 

sits the pleasant community of Rexburg, 

rebuilt after a devastating flood. 

In 1976, the newly constructed Teton 

Dam burst, pouring billions of gallons 

of water through the town. The Teton 

Flood Museum details the tragedy and 

the citizens’ reaction to it, and also 

displays pioneer relics and an extensive 

opal and agate collection. To see the 

remains of the dam, follow Highway 33 

to Newdale and watch for road signs. 

Rexburg is also home to the Idaho 

International Dance and Music Festival, 

held each summer on the campus of 

BYU Idaho. Hundreds of dancers from 

a variety of countries come to Idaho to 

perform, share their cultural heritage, 

and experience the best of America. Free 

events include the opening and closing 

ceremonies, street dances, a parade, 

and fireworks, while ticketed events 

include the indoor dance performances. 

If off-roading is your favorite diversion, 

head to St. Anthony Sand Dunes, 

just north of St. Anthony, for fun in the 

sun and sand. These dunes, managed 

by the Bureau of Land Management 

for ATV use, consist of 11,000 acres of 

clear, shifting, white quartz sand.

Island Park 

This rustic resort area is actually the 

world’s largest caldera, 23 miles in 

diameter, created from a volcano that 

collapsed in prehistoric times. Now 

carpeted in wildflowers and dense 

pine forests, it is popular for hiking 

and fishing in the summer and Nordic 

skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. 

The Henrys Fork of the Snake River 

is a stretch of clear mountain water 

acclaimed by fly-fishing enthusiasts as 

the best trout-fishing stream in the U.S. 

Curtailed here to form the 7,000-acre 

Island Park Reservoir, it is popular with 

both anglers and boaters. One source 

of the Henrys Fork is Big Springs, where 

120 million gallons of water bubble up 

into the river each day. The Big Springs 

Nature Trail, six miles north of the Island 

Park Ranger Station, is a half-mile, 

handicap-accessible trail that provides 

great viewing of osprey, bald eagles, 

and waterfowl, and an occasional 

moose, deer, or muskrat. 

The Henrys Fork then winds through 

the picture-perfect meadows of Harriman 

State Park. Also known as the 

Railroad Ranch, this property was 

deeded to Idaho by the Harriman family 

of the Union Pacific Railroad. Guided 

tours of the ranch are available in the 

summer. Yurts and the former ranch 

manager’s house are available to rent. 

You can hike, fish, cycle, horseback 

ride, or simply observe the wildlife that 

abounds in the park. A most rewarding 

side trip en route to Island Park is the 

Mesa Falls Scenic Byway on Highway 

47. Lower Mesa Falls is 65 feet high 

and can be viewed from an observation 

point high above the falls. Stunning Upper 

Mesa Falls plunges 114 feet and has 

a network of viewing platforms as well 

as a visitor center. 

Located just 15 miles west of Yellowstone 

National Park, Henrys Lake is the 

kind of place fishermen dream about. 

Named after explorer and fur trapper 

Major Andrew Henry, Henrys Lake State 

Park is open in summer and fall with 45 

campsites, camping cabins, and a modern 

fish-cleaning station for anglers’ 

convenience. 

Teton Valley 

Black Bear 

Just over the mountain from Jackson 

Hole, Wyoming, are the communities 

of Driggs, Tetonia, and Victor. Teton 

Valley is the less crowded, more relaxed 

side of the Teton Mountains. The valley 

is a rural agricultural area perched at 

6,200 feet in elevation, with outstanding 

outdoor recreation in both summer 

and winter. Hospitable resorts, hotels, 

guest ranches, and bed-and-breakfast 

inns can be found throughout the 

valley. Experience the beauty and 

recreational activities of the Tetons 

on your own or with an outfitter who 

will give you personal insights into this 

glorious country. If you visit in the summer, 

plan to fish on the Teton River, hike 

in the mountains, play golf at Teton 

Springs, or go on a trail ride. In the 

winter, Teton Valley is transformed into 

a magical white paradise. Abundant 

snow makes for fantastic alpine and 

Nordic skiing and snowmobiling. Some 

of the best powder on the planet can 

be found at Grand Targhee Resort, just 

outside of Driggs in Alta, Wyoming. 

Grand Targhee offers astounding views 

of the Tetons and a variety of winter and 

summer activities. 

This historical rendezvous area, once 

called “Pierre’s Hole” by fur trappers, 

has two museums to explore: the Teton 

Valley Museum on Highway 33 and the 

Warbirds Museum at the Driggs airport. 

If you use eastern Idaho as a base, you 

can explore both Yellowstone and Teton 

National Parks, plus enjoy the quiet and 

solitude of one of America’s most scenic 

mountain ranges.

Divide, icy water feeds the most 

acclaimed trout fishing streams in the 

west, the popular South Fork of the 

Snake, the Teton River, and the outstanding 

Henrys Fork of the Snake River 

at Island Park. Snowmelt is augmented 

by water from Big Springs, where 120 

million gallons per day bubble up into 

the river. Anglers can nab a variety 

of trout species in these rivers, while 

observing other wildlife such as osprey 

and bald eagles. 

» If that’s not enough wildlife for you, 

get into the backcountry and take a 

naturalist with you. Outfitters are available 

with guides who know the flora, 

fauna, and history of the area. Stop in 

at the Forest Service ranger station or 

the Chamber of Commerce for more

Grand Targhee Resort serves up all 

sorts of winter fun just over the border 

in Wyoming, while Kelly Canyon is a 

small ski area just east of Ririe. 

» If your idea of adventure has 27 

holes, you’ll find the best eastern Idaho 

has to offer at Teton Springs. True to its 

name with rolling fairways amid springfed 

lakes, it is a fair test for any golfer. 

When your round is completed, the 

staff at Stillwaters Spa can soothe your 

tired muscles. 

» Take to the sands of St. Anthony 

Dunes for some off-road excitement 

on 60 miles of windswept sand. If twowheeling 

is more your style, head for 

Swan Valley. You’ll find great views of 

the South Fork of the Snake River on 

mountain bike trails, where wildlife can 

be seen in the area. 

» Near Ririe is Heise Hot Springs, a 

natural mineral hot springs facility with 

warm and cool pools, a water slide, golf 

course, and campgrounds. Heise Zip 

is the newest attraction at the resort, 

with 7 zip lines waiting to carry you on 

an impressive mile-long aerial tour over 

the Snake River.

exquisite wines. For a nice change, try 

Rumbi Island Grill for fresh food with a 

Caribbean flavor. Wander over to Love 

at First Bite for delicious cupcakes 

and a nice assortment of candies and 

chocolates. When in the Teton Valley, 

be sure to stop at the Victor Emporium 

for an old-fashioned huckleberry shake, 

or if you are in the mood for something 

stronger, stop in at the Teton Brewing 

Company in Victor for a craft beer or 

root beer. 

» Have you been to a classic drive-in 

theater recently? Spend a lazy summer 

evening at the old-fashioned Spud 

Drive-In Theatre. You can’t miss this 

valley landmark, with its vintage truck 

out front hauling the biggest potato 

you’ve ever seen. Films play after dark 

all summer long. 

» Another classic in eastern Idaho 

that is a must for the kids is the Idaho 

Centennial Carousel at Porter Park in 

Rexburg. Idaho’s only wooden carousel 

is one of only about 170 still in existence 

in the United States. Watch your 

children delight to the authentic organ 

music that swirls around the horses 

and chariots. This stunning piece of 

nostalgia was renovated in 1990 for 

Idaho’s Centennial.
