Introduction<br />
The <strong>World</strong>’s <strong>Colu</strong><strong>mbia</strong>n <strong>Expo</strong>sition tr<strong>an</strong>sformed <strong>th</strong>e city of <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong> in <strong>1893</strong> <strong>an</strong>d influenced <strong>th</strong>e city’s<br />
development for decades to come. The <strong>Colu</strong><strong>mbia</strong>n <strong>Expo</strong>sition, also known as <strong>th</strong>e <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong> <strong>World</strong>’s Fair, was<br />
located in Jackson Park, at <strong>th</strong>e current site of <strong>th</strong>e Museum of Science <strong>an</strong>d I<strong>nd</strong>ustry <strong>an</strong>d <strong>th</strong>e Midway Plais<strong>an</strong>ce.<br />
It drew <strong>an</strong> estimated 27 million visitors, 14 million from outside <strong>th</strong>e United States, at a time when <strong>th</strong>e<br />
population of <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong> was just over one million. The <strong>Colu</strong><strong>mbia</strong>n <strong>Expo</strong>sition celebrated, one year late, <strong>th</strong>e<br />
four hu<strong>nd</strong>red<strong>th</strong> <strong>an</strong>niversary of <strong>Ch</strong>ristopher <strong>Colu</strong>mbus’ “discovery” of <strong>th</strong>e Americas. <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong> competed wi<strong>th</strong><br />
cities such as New York <strong>an</strong>d St. Louis for <strong>th</strong>e right to host <strong>th</strong>e fair. <strong>Expo</strong>sition pl<strong>an</strong>ners w<strong>an</strong>ted to showcase<br />
<strong>th</strong>e nation, still coming to terms wi<strong>th</strong> <strong>th</strong>e Civil War <strong>th</strong>at had e<strong>nd</strong>ed 28 years earlier. They also w<strong>an</strong>ted to<br />
demonstrate <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong>’s international stature just 22 years after much of <strong>th</strong>e city had been destroyed by fire.<br />
D<strong>an</strong>iel Burnham served as <strong>th</strong>e fair’s lead architect <strong>an</strong>d oversaw <strong>th</strong>e design <strong>an</strong>d pl<strong>an</strong>ning of <strong>th</strong>e fair’s main<br />
buildings. These massive, neoclassical structures came to be known, collectively, as <strong>th</strong>e White City. Despite<br />
<strong>th</strong>eir imposing appear<strong>an</strong>ce, <strong>th</strong>e buildings were made from wood frames wrapped in staff, a plaster mixture<br />
<strong>th</strong>at created <strong>th</strong>e illusion of stone. The White City stood for less <strong>th</strong><strong>an</strong> six mon<strong>th</strong>s. The exposition closed in late<br />
October <strong>1893</strong> <strong>an</strong>d, <strong>th</strong>at winter, almost all of <strong>th</strong>e buildings were destroyed by fire. The documents <strong>th</strong>at follow<br />
present <strong>th</strong>e history of <strong>th</strong>e <strong>Colu</strong><strong>mbia</strong>n <strong>Expo</strong>sition in relation to <strong>th</strong>e history of <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong>.<br />
Please keep <strong>th</strong>e following questions in mi<strong>nd</strong> as you review <strong>th</strong>e documents<br />
• What is <strong>th</strong>e ideal city expressed in <strong>th</strong>e <strong>Colu</strong><strong>mbia</strong>n <strong>Expo</strong>sition documents? What forms of artistic <strong>an</strong>d<br />
civic culture would <strong>th</strong>is city promote?<br />
• How did <strong>th</strong>e exposition physically tr<strong>an</strong>sform <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong>, especially its lakefront <strong>an</strong>d parks?<br />
• How does <strong>th</strong>e exposition portray <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong>, <strong>th</strong>e United States, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>th</strong>e world?<br />
• What was <strong>th</strong>e exposition’s legacy for <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong>?

These two collections of photographs were published a year apart <strong>an</strong>d give a strong sense of <strong>th</strong>e contrast<br />
between downtown <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong> in <strong>th</strong>e 1890s <strong>an</strong>d <strong>th</strong>e White City of <strong>th</strong>e <strong>Colu</strong><strong>mbia</strong>n <strong>Expo</strong>sition.<br />
Questions to Consider<br />
1. Compare downtown <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong>, in <strong>th</strong>e first two photographs, to <strong>th</strong>e White City, portrayed in <strong>th</strong>e <strong>th</strong>ird<br />
<strong>an</strong>d four<strong>th</strong> photographs. What differences do you notice? Describe how you would feel in each of<br />
<strong>th</strong>ese settings.<br />
2. How would <strong>th</strong>ese very different forms of architecture <strong>an</strong>d urb<strong>an</strong> pl<strong>an</strong>ning shape <strong>th</strong>e experiences—<br />
<strong>an</strong>d <strong>th</strong>e behavior—of people who moved <strong>th</strong>rough <strong>th</strong>em?<br />

Questions to Consider<br />
1. How does <strong>th</strong>e text describe <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong> as a physical location? Why do you <strong>th</strong>ink <strong>th</strong>e au<strong>th</strong>or included<br />
<strong>th</strong>is information in <strong>an</strong> account of <strong>th</strong>e creation of <strong>th</strong>e <strong>Colu</strong><strong>mbia</strong>n <strong>Expo</strong>sition?<br />
2. Examine <strong>th</strong>e engraved “bird’s-eye view” of <strong>th</strong>e exposition. How does <strong>th</strong>e exposition appear? What<br />
ki<strong>nd</strong>s of activities are represented in <strong>th</strong>e illustration? How do <strong>th</strong>ese activities compare to people’s<br />
activities in <strong>th</strong>e photographs of <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong> (Documents 1 <strong>an</strong>d 2)?

2. Using <strong>th</strong>e i<strong>nd</strong>ex (see detail) as well as <strong>th</strong>e map, note <strong>th</strong>e names of buildings in <strong>th</strong>e White City. What<br />
do <strong>th</strong>e buildings <strong>an</strong>d <strong>th</strong>eir layout tell us about what <strong>th</strong>e exposition pl<strong>an</strong>ners w<strong>an</strong>ted to showcase?<br />
3. Examine <strong>th</strong>e i<strong>nd</strong>ex to <strong>th</strong>e Midway Plais<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d identify <strong>th</strong>e different cultures represented <strong>th</strong>ere.<br />
Moving from left to right, how are <strong>th</strong>e Midway exhibits arr<strong>an</strong>ged? Why do you <strong>th</strong>ink <strong>th</strong>ey’re arr<strong>an</strong>ged<br />

While <strong>th</strong>e White City featured monumental buildings to exhibit <strong>th</strong>e fine arts, i<strong>nd</strong>ustry, <strong>an</strong>d agriculture, <strong>th</strong>e<br />
Midway Plais<strong>an</strong>ce took on a very different form <strong>an</strong>d character. <strong>Expo</strong>sition pl<strong>an</strong>ners inte<strong>nd</strong>ed <strong>th</strong>e Midway to<br />
be a site for entertainment, as well as education. For <strong>th</strong>e Midway’s e<strong>th</strong>nographic exhibits, groups of people<br />
from arou<strong>nd</strong> <strong>th</strong>e world—I<strong>nd</strong>onesia, West Africa, Germ<strong>an</strong>y—were brought to <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong> to be put on display in<br />
buildings designed to recreate <strong>th</strong>eir “native” villages. At <strong>th</strong>e same time, <strong>th</strong>e Midway became a prototype for<br />
<strong>th</strong>e amusement park <strong>an</strong>d included <strong>th</strong>e first Ferris wheel as well as numerous shows <strong>an</strong>d cafes.<br />
Questions to Consider<br />
1. Describe <strong>th</strong>ese images from <strong>th</strong>e Arabi<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>d Dahomey exhibits. What do you <strong>th</strong>ink <strong>th</strong>e org<strong>an</strong>izers<br />
were trying to accomplish <strong>th</strong>rough <strong>th</strong>eir layout <strong>an</strong>d design?<br />
2. What ki<strong>nd</strong> of experience did <strong>th</strong>e Midway provide to fair<strong>go</strong>ers? What do you <strong>th</strong>ink <strong>th</strong>e experience<br />
would have been like for <strong>th</strong>e people on display in <strong>th</strong>e exhibits?

prostitutes. The chapter included here describes “<strong>Ch</strong>eyenne,” purportedly <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong>’s roughest neighborhood.<br />
Questions to Consider<br />
1. How does <strong>th</strong>e au<strong>th</strong>or portray <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong>’s “most d<strong>an</strong>gerous district”? Who lives <strong>th</strong>ere? What makes it<br />
so d<strong>an</strong>gerous?<br />
2. How does <strong>th</strong>is representation of Afric<strong>an</strong> Americ<strong>an</strong>s <strong>an</strong>d Europe<strong>an</strong>s compare to <strong>th</strong>e exposition’s<br />

D<strong>an</strong>iel H. Burham <strong>an</strong>d Edward H. Bennett. Pl<strong>an</strong> of <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong>. 1909. pp. 4 <strong>an</strong>d 6.<br />
Newberry Call No. Case folio W 999 .182<br />
In 1909 <strong>th</strong>e principal architect of <strong>th</strong>e <strong>Colu</strong><strong>mbia</strong>n <strong>Expo</strong>sition, D<strong>an</strong>iel Burnham, collaborated wi<strong>th</strong> Edward<br />
Bennett <strong>an</strong>d <strong>th</strong>e Commercial Club of <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong> on <strong>th</strong>e Pl<strong>an</strong> of <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong>. This ambitious document offered a<br />
comprehensive vision of what <strong>th</strong>e city could become in <strong>th</strong>e twentie<strong>th</strong> century. The Pl<strong>an</strong>’s recomme<strong>nd</strong>ations<br />
included <strong>th</strong>e creation of <strong>th</strong>e lakefront <strong>an</strong>d neighborhood parks, <strong>th</strong>e construction of Lake Shore Drive, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>th</strong>e<br />
widening of major streets. Much of <strong>th</strong>e Pl<strong>an</strong> would be realized over <strong>th</strong>e next 50 years. In <strong>th</strong>is passage,<br />
Burnham discusses <strong>th</strong>e <strong>go</strong>als of <strong>th</strong>e Pl<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>d its relationship to <strong>th</strong>e <strong>1893</strong> exposition.<br />
Questions to Consider<br />
1. What are <strong>th</strong>e <strong>go</strong>als of <strong>th</strong>e Pl<strong>an</strong> of <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong>? How do Burnham <strong>an</strong>d <strong>th</strong>e o<strong>th</strong>er au<strong>th</strong>ors believe <strong>th</strong>e city<br />
should develop? What were <strong>th</strong>e primary considerations of <strong>th</strong>e pl<strong>an</strong>ners?<br />
2. Why does Burnham identify <strong>th</strong>e <strong>Colu</strong><strong>mbia</strong>n <strong>Expo</strong>sition as <strong>th</strong>e “origin” of <strong>th</strong>e Pl<strong>an</strong>?<br />
3. What is <strong>th</strong>e “spirit of <strong>th</strong>e <strong>World</strong>’s Fair” according to <strong>th</strong>e footnote on page six? What relev<strong>an</strong>ce does<br />
it have to <strong>th</strong>e development of <strong>Ch</strong>ica<strong>go</strong>?<br />
4. Why do you <strong>th</strong>ink Burnham is concerned wi<strong>th</strong> “dignity” <strong>an</strong>d “beauty” in a city <strong>th</strong>at he describes as<br />
<strong>th</strong>e “center of i<strong>nd</strong>ustry <strong>an</strong>d traffic”? How will beautifying <strong>th</strong>e city affect <strong>th</strong>e people in <strong>th</strong>e city?
