SCHOOL BOARD MEETING<br />

TUESDAY, APRIL 3, 2007<br />

PUBLIC MEETING<br />

Chairperson Maclagan called the <strong>meeting</strong> to order at 7:39 p.m. The board acknowledged that<br />

Pinecrest Elementary Principal, Richard Franklin has been named the recipient <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Distinguished Principal <strong>of</strong> the Year award from the Canadian Association <strong>of</strong> Principals. He will<br />

be presented his award on April 13 at the Association’s annual conference in Vancouver.<br />

REPORT OF CONFIDENTIAL MEETING<br />

Trustee Babchuck <strong>report</strong>ed that personnel matters and new business from the Ministry <strong>of</strong><br />

Education were discussed at the in-camera <strong>meeting</strong>.<br />

PUBLIC SUBMISSIONS<br />

• There were no <strong>public</strong> <strong>submissions</strong>.<br />

AGENDA SUBMISSIONS<br />

• The board heard a presentation from Darlene Ngo on Carihi Secondary’s upcoming<br />

presentation <strong>of</strong> Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat. Cast from Carihi and<br />

members <strong>of</strong> the École des Deux Mondes choir performed two songs from the production<br />

for the board and gallery.<br />

• The board heard a presentation from Timberline teacher Diana Camerin; students Alec<br />

Brown, Troy Graham and Kam Maltais; and BC Hydro representative Mary Ferguson<br />

regarding Timberline’s Power Smart 2007 project. It was noted by Mary Ferguson that<br />

BC Hydro works with over 50 districts throughout the province and SD72’s program<br />

mentors Tom Hall and Costas Roussinos should receive recognition as being amongst the<br />

best in the program.<br />

ELECTORATE AND BOARD MATTERS<br />

• There were no electorate and board matters on the evening’s agenda.<br />

EDUCATIONAL ISSUES<br />

• Chairperson George Maclagan awarded students, Matthew May and Ian Renaud, with<br />

Senior Secondary Apprenticeship scholarships <strong>of</strong> $1,000 and certificates <strong>of</strong> completion<br />

from the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Education.<br />

• The board heard a presentation from Carihi teacher Phil Cassidy and students, Alayna<br />

Howard, Lisa Arnold, Evan Roberts, and Katherine Burger about a student trip to Europe,<br />

entitled Canada’s Battlefields, over spring break. The group visited several historic sites<br />

including Dieppe, Beny Sur Mer, Juno Beach, and Vimy Ridge.<br />

• Roy Brooks, Principal <strong>of</strong> the Robron Centre, provided the board with an update on the<br />

various school district and community programs housed in Robron Centre. Roy noted<br />

that because <strong>of</strong> funding changes from the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Education Continuing Education is<br />

able to provide courses for secondary school students in the instances <strong>of</strong> scheduling<br />

conflicts and advance placement courses.


BUSINESS ISSUES<br />

• Secretary-Treasurer Lyle Boyce outlined that the 2007/08 budget process is underway.<br />

Another <strong>meeting</strong> is scheduled on April 10 and the board will have <strong>public</strong> discussions on<br />

the budget at the April 24 board <strong>meeting</strong>.<br />

• Secretary-Treasurer Lyle Boyce presented Finance Warrant No. 1 dated January 31,<br />

2007. The board passed a motion to accept the Finance Warrant as presented.<br />

COMMITTEE REPORTS<br />

• Trustees Bowbrick, Foster and Harle <strong>report</strong>ed on the Vancouver Island School Trustees<br />

spring conference held in Port Hardy.<br />

ANY OTHER BUSINESS<br />

• There was no other business.<br />

QUESTIONS FROM THE PUBLIC<br />

• There were no questions from the <strong>public</strong>.<br />

With no further questions, Chairperson Maclagan adjourned the <strong>meeting</strong> at 9:22 p.m.
