A Potted History of the Best Western<br />

<strong>Cartland</strong> <strong>Bridge</strong> <strong>Hotel</strong><br />

The hotel was built on the Baronald Estate in late 1800’s as a private family home<br />

for James Farie of Farme. It took four years of hard work to create this magnificent<br />

house with wonderful displays of craftsmanship throughout; In the 1800’s you<br />

could commission such works for the princely sum of £500,000.<br />

The building is now Category A Listed.<br />

The Baronald House was a family home until early 1939 when it was used by the<br />

War Office. Following the end of the war the house lay empty for a while then became<br />

a home for inebriates, until it closed in 1954 then was reborn as the<br />

<strong>Cartland</strong> <strong>Bridge</strong> <strong>Hotel</strong> in 1962.<br />

Like many old building this one has many stories to tell….. The Farie Family had a<br />

daughter called Annie, who met an untimely death during a riding accident in the<br />

grounds aged 7 years. Her portrait takes pride of place above the fireplace in the<br />

Portrait Room Restaurant and her ghost still visits from time to time,<br />

particularly in what was once her “Dolls Room” now one of our bedrooms!!<br />

Today our Chef uses as much local and Scottish produce as possible and<br />

prepares superb meals for all to enjoy from the house’s original kitchen area.
