Joy Kinney, Our Neighbor,
A SouthPark Icon, Our Friend
I always said that if I had known I was going to get Joy Kinney as my next door
neighbor, I would have paid at least $25,000 MORE for my sweet little SouthPark townhouse!
And I truly meant what I said!
Joy Kinney is that special kind of neighbor everyone dreams of having. She knew
everyone and everything about Littleton. She introduced me to everyone she knew – to
people, places and things that soon became very special parts of my life.
And EVERYONE in SouthPark knows Joy. And JOY is what she brought into the
lives of all she knew and met. Every day, we’d see her walking with her dogs – first,
2011 Painting Reminder
A reminder to those owners who are required to paint their townhome, the deadline
for completion of painting is September 30, 2011. The following buildings are required
to have their townhome painted, including refinishing of your front door.
COLONY
West Long Circle: 2880 2882 2884 2886
2888 2890 2892
Paint manufacture: KWAL Howells Paints
Building paint color name: Sierra Tan
Trim paint color name: Writer White
Paint type name: Accu-Tone “Ambassador” Satin
Paint store address: 8001 S. Broadway, Littleton, CO 80122
(Behind McDonalds), 720-344-7942.
Noncompliance by September 30, 2011, will result in the Association employing a
contractor to repaint the exterior of your home and billing the cost of that repainting to
you (pursuant to Article VIII of the Declaration of Covenants and Restrictions). In addition,
a $50.00 fine will be imposed.
Check the newsletter for advertised paint contractors. Ask for discounts if all townhomes
in a building are painted by the same company. Check references and hopefully
some from other owners in the community.
The SouthPark 2 Homeowner Association, Board of Directors, Covenant Committee
and the Architectural Committee does not endorse or recommend any of the advertising
contractors.
Should you have any questions regarding the painting, call Kevin Lavene or Dale
Lavene at Centennial Management Group, 720-528-8557 or check the web site at
www.southpark2-hoa.org.
Shrub Trimming
The trimming of deciduous shrubs is scheduled to begin in late
June and is expected to take 5-7 weeks to complete. With a wet
spring and early summer, the shrubbery has thrived. All deciduous
shrubs will be trimmed with the exception of those that are flowering.
However, if the flowering shrubs create an issue of safe passage
along a sidewalk, access or egress to a townhome or pose a
safety issue, they will be trimmed. Please be patient, as jumping from townhome to
townhome would delay the most efficient means of completing this large project.
If homeowners do not want the landscape company to trim certain shrubs around their
townhome, attach a brightly colored ribbon to the shrub(s), where it can obviously be
seen. However, if the marked shrubs create an issue of safe passage along a sidewalk,
access or egress to a townhome or pose a safety issue, they will be trimmed.
little Radar, and then in the later years, Tipper, her true canine love.
Joy and Tipper went everywhere together. And Tipper was as well
known as Joy was.
Joy Kinney, the consummate Gardener, with her giant sequoia
rose bushes facing the McClellan Reservoir, who taught in Littleton
schools for over 25 years.
She was a noted Littleton artist and potter, and her works hold
places of high esteem in many lucky homes. She volunteered many
hours to the Littleton Art Guild, and we often saw her working
at The Depot in downtown Littleton. Joy also L-O-V-E-D playing
cards. Both Joy’s good friend Randy and I spent many long hours
getting our pants beat by this superior card shark.
Not too long ago, Joy had a bad fall that caused great injury to
her leg. For a long time, she struggled with her recovery. In addition,
she lost her long-time, dear friend Dale, whom she visited at
the Littleton Life Care Center every day for two years, until he
passed on.
Shortly afterward, Joy obtained her faithful walker, which
became her companion on her long walks along the Reservoir with
Tipper. When Tipper, and Joy’s cats Kliban, Smokey and Princess
White Cloud passed on, we all knew a piece of Joy went with them.
Just this past February, Joy moved into Assisted Living in
Colorado Springs, near the home of her daughter Marilyn.
Joy’s birthday is July 31st. Would you please join me in a lovely
surprise we can give to Joy (if you can) to send her a card of
Happy Birthday Wishes?
Her address is: Joy Kinney , 2490 International Circle, Room
200, Colorado Springs, CO 80910. Or, if you like, you can bring
your card to me and I’ll take it to her personally. Joy would also
love to hear from her former SouthPark neighbors. Her direct
phone number is 719-313-4191.
Also, all are invited and anyone who’d like to join us in a trip to
Colorado Springs to see Joy and wish her a Happy Birthday are welcome.
This will be on Saturday, July 23rd, 2011 at 10:00 a.m., for a
wonderful SouthPark Neighbor and Friend Birthday Lunch where
Joy lives. Please give me a call at your earliest opportunity, so we
can make arrangements for transportation, or for more information.
Help Prevent Thefts from Motor Vehicles
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office wants to work with
residents to prevent criminal activity. Theft from motor vehicles
are crimes where thieves take valuables from parked cars, usually
without stealing the vehicle. These crimes can frequently be
prevented. Here are some tips that may prevent you from becoming
a victim:
• Always completely roll up your windows and lock your
car doors when parked
• Remove valuables. Valuables such as purses, wallets, GPS
units, satellite radios and radar detectors should be
removed from your vehicle or placed in the glove box or
trunk of your parked car. Be aware of your surroundings
and make sure you are not being watched when you put
these items in your trunk.
• Whenever possible, park your car in a closed or locked
garage
• If garage parking is not possible, park in your driveway or
in a well lit area. Consider motion lights aimed at your
driveway to deter thieves and provide extra safety as you
enter and exit your car at night. Well lit areas on a street or
in a lot are better than darkened areas.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages citizens to report suspicious
activity. This can be any person, act, event, vehicle or situation
that appears questionable. Trust your instincts!
REPORT IT: Remember, you are the eyes and ears of the
Sheriff’s Office and your community. Report suspicious activity
immediately. Anything that seems slightly out of place or “doesn’t
look right” could be criminal activity. When calling, be sure to
report the reason for your call and location of the activity.
SEE IT: If you see suspicious activity, report it. The
Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office relies on early and accurate
information from citizens reporting suspicious activity. You and
your neighbors can be the first to spot a burglar in or around a
home, or a strange car in a driveway. Remember lighting is considered
to be the most cost effective deterrent to crime.
HEAR IT: Listen for suspicious activity. Unusual sounds or
barking dogs can be caused by prowlers or suspicious vehicles.
Everyone should get in the habit of looking outside their windows,
especially of the noises wake you up at night.
HOMEOWNER AWARENESS = YOUR FAMILIES SAFETY!
Do you know that your neighborhood was built during an era that used electrical panels and breakers that were soon thereafter
recalled? F.P.E. (Federal Pacific Electric) panels and breakers used during the construction of your neighborhood have been found to be
faulty and extremely dangerous. Is your home currently supplied by F.P.E. panels and breakers? If so, Delmark Electric urges you to
further your knowledge on the history of this defective product by simply searching “F.P.E. recall” in your search engine. There you will find
Sprinkler System Upgrades = Being Water Smart With Smart Watering
Emerald Isle Landscaping has installed new sprinkler clocks
and replaced sprinkler head nozzles. These improvements are
being paid from the reserve account. The new improvements will
potentially save the Association thousands of dollars in watering
costs. The Association is also receiving rebates from Denver
Water that will dramatically offset the cost of these improvements.
The new sprinkler clocks, along with the installation of
new sprinkler head nozzles, will reduce the amount of water used.
The new watering system will now be controlled by “smart
clocks.” These “smart clocks” are electronically connected to a
nearby weather station where the local weather is updated daily.
The “smart clocks” analyze the information that is received and
automatically adjusts how much and how long the sprinklers need
to run to give the grass a sufficient amount of water so that the
Association is not over-watering or under-watering the grass. The
new sprinkler head nozzles that are being installed will aid in
conserving water by lowering the amount of water per second
that is being applied to the grass. This will lower the effects of
runoff, wind drift and allow the Association to water the grass
more efficiently. Though installing a more “Green” and efficient
watering system, there are some changes that you might see.
Because the new sprinkler head nozzles will reduce the speed in
which the grass is being watered, the sprinklers may be on for
longer periods of time and for more days per week than usual.
Even with the sprinklers being on more, the new system is actually
going to reduce the amount of water used. The other change
that probably will be seen around the neighborhood is, initially,
browner grass than past years. The clock technology is relatively
new and configuring an existing older system to the new clock
technology, data and programs will take some time to adjust. In
addition, because of overwatering the grass, the grass will not be
used to the new amount of water and will go through an adjustment
period (training the grass root system for less water).
Though there may be some areas with brown grass, we are excited
to install an up-to-date system, save water, and most importantly,
save money for the community. Factors in moving to the
“Green” system is that Denver Water had notified its customers to
get used to 8-10% annual increases and their rebate program for
conversion and improvements made economic sense at this time.
The Board of Directors would like to stay on top of the newest
technology to save the homeowners money, especially in this
difficult economy. The grass will not die during this period of
transition, but patience will be required of all for this program to
be successful.
Eat The Right Stuff For a Long Life
The foods you eat can make a big difference to your heart’s
health and your overall longevity. Fortunately, that doesn’t mean
you can’t eat anything tasty or fun. Keep your heart in good shape
by choosing these foods the next time you’re hungry:
• Salmon. Fish like salmon, shrimp, tuna, and sardines are
rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which help blood
flow. (Be careful of mercury levels of tuna, though,
especially for pregnant or breast-feeding women and
small children).
• Oatmeal. Full of fiber and potassium (as well as omega-
3), coarse or steel-cut oats (not instant) can reduce levels
of LDL cholesterol and help keep arteries clear. Add a
banana for some extra fiber.
• Nuts and berries. You may feel like you’re foraging
in the wilderness, but nuts (walnuts, almonds, and
macadamias) along with blueberries, blackberries, and
strawberries, can help keep blood pressure down and
reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer.
• Avocado. Add a little bit to your sandwich or salad, and
you’ll help lower levels of “bad” cholesterol and increase
the “good” cholesterol in your body.
• Beans. Lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans, black beans – all
are packed with soluble fiber, calcium, and omega-3.
• Dark chocolate. Don’t go on a binge, but cocoa beans
contain flavanols, which can help lower blood pressure
and decrease inflammation. Dark chocolate tends to have
more cocoa solids, which increase the flavanol level.
FREE Rigegate“Walk” Concerts
Take a walk around the park, bring your lunch picnic, and settle
in to enjoy the sounds of great Metro bands. South Suburban
Parks and Recreation is hosting a series of free concerts outside
the Lone Tree Recreation Center, 10249 Ridgegate Circle, from
11:30 to 1 p.m. July 6: Something Underground. Something
Underground is a high-energy rock and roll, some liken their
sound to a cross between Simon and Garfunkel and Led Zeppelin.
Go Back to Basics to Ease Back Pain
Your parents told you to sit up straight, but if you slump in your
chair, you could be putting unnecessary and painful strain on your
back. Here are some basic tips to improve your sitting posture:
• Pick a chair that fits your body. The seat should fit the distance
from your buttocks to your knees. And your chair
should be the right height from your knees to the floor for
your legs to be straight and comfortable.
• Support your lower back. Use pillows with office chairs
(or the seat of your car).
• Don’t sit with your head forward. You’ll put added strain
on your spine. Sit up straight (Yes, Mom), and try not to
lean your body to one side or the other.
Exercise Professional Etiquette At The Gym
The golf course used to be where executives met to combine
business with exercise. These days many of us share workouts at
the gym or health club with colleagues and managers, and that
can call for a different brand of etiquette. Keep these tips in mind:
• Dress for success. Workout clothes can be sensible, but
not too casual or risqué. Ripped T-shirts and skin-tight
spandex can send the wrong message.
• Look out in the locker room. When you’re changing or
showering, maintain a reasonable level of privacy. Once
you and the CEO have seen each other’s underwear, the
image can be hard to erase.
• Don’t show off. Maybe you can bench-press more weight
than anyone in your department, or rebound with the best
of them. You’ll win more respect by concentrating on your
workout without bragging or shamelessly seeking attention.
• Stay professional. Doing your victory dance after dunking
a basketball can seem immature and arrogant. Remember
that you need to work with these people after you’ve gone
back to the office.
“Family life is too intimate to be preserved by the spirit of justice.
It can be sustained by a spirit of love which goes beyond justice.”
Maintain Your Energy Level To Stay On The Fast Track
People who succeed usually have lots of energy.
They’re hardworking, focused, and willing to put in whatever
effort is necessary to achieve their goals. But maintaining
a high energy level all day every day can be
difficult. Here’s how to keep going without resorting to
pills or other dangerous options:
• Wear bright colors. Projecting a positive, energetic
attitude through your wardrobe can bring out enthusiasm
and good spirits in others. A positive response from people
around you will stimulate your own motivation.
• Eat a power snack. A little chocolate can give you
a slight endorphin buzz, along with a mild jolt of caffeine.
When your energy flags in the afternoon, a modest snack of
mixed nuts, dried fruits, granola, and/or some yogurt can
rejuvenate you better than a calorie-filled candy bar.
• Stand on tiptoe. One good stretch when you’re feeling tired is
rolling up and down on your tiptoes a few times. This can get your circulatory
system moving, sending oxygen and glucose through your
body for a burst of energy.
• Smell some citrus. Citrus scents like lemon, grapefruit, and
lime can enhance your alertness. Try it.
• Drink some water. Dehydration can sap your energy, so make
sure you get plenty of water throughout the day. And when you feel
tired, splash a little cold water on your face to wake yourself up.
• Change your socks. This is an offbeat little tip, but it sounds
like it might work: About halfway through your day, take a little time
to put on a fresh pair of socks. Experts say that it can make you feel
refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of your day, especially if you
spend a lot of time on your feet.
