viking Market
7,500 visitors can’t be wrong – Saltvik’s Viking Market is one event
you won’t want to miss. Hobnob with unruly Vikings, hotheaded
warriors and beautiful wenches in the tented Viking village. Browse
market stalls laden with authentic handicrafts and let our tavern
tempt you into sampling food and drink of the period served on
wooden platters. Add demonstrations of armed combat, exciting
activities for the children and music from the Middle Ages and the
experience is complete.
back to
the days of Gustav vasa
The Gustav Vasa Days at Kastelholm transport you straight
back to the 16 th century and Kastelholm’s heyday when the
king himself, Gustav Vasa, stayed here. Relive the fate of the
Vasa dynasty from little Gustav Vasa to the final battle of
Kastelholm as actors mingle amongst the audience to bring
the story to life. Explore the historical market in the company
of fearsome soldiers and naughty jesters or enjoy the traditional
food and drink. Lots of fun for the children.
for all music lovers
then the Katrina Culture Society’s annual concert series is
for you. The concert programme is varied even though this
year’s Sibelius jubilee makes its mark. And as always there are
many highpoints. Tempera Quartet, baroque ensemble Battalia
with tenor Topi Lehtipuu, and cellist Pierre Doumenge
are just some of the talented musicians taking part. If you
find it hard to choose an event let us recommend ‘Katrina
19 th Century
wedding festivities
The annual country wedding tells all about the traditions of an Ålandic wedding
celebration in the 19 th century. This from the bridal procession to the
first dance, complete with the beer waiters toting full barrels and toasts to
the happy couple. Dress up in 19 th century finery and join the procession
from Jomala Church to Ulfsby Gård, or be there at Ulfsby to greet them on
arrival. On the farm awaits a wedding market selling local crafts and Ålandic
produce. Round off the day with a wedding dinner in ‘Stensalen’.
bomarsund days
– a glimpse of the past
A visit to the market in Bomarsund takes you back in time to 19 th century
Åland, a time when the area around Bomarsund’s fortress was
Åland’s foremost multicultural centre. Here orthodox Greeks, Protestants,
Catholics, Jews and Muslims all lived and worked together.
Drama and music on the market square bring to life the story of the
rise and fall of the fortress. Bomarsund Days include handicrafts,
refreshments, guided walks, pony rides and other activities for young
and old.
Beautiful are the maypoles of Midsummer in Åland
The beautifully decorated midsummer poles have become a symbol
of Åland and the ålandic summer. Åland’s Museum pays tribute to the
poles, their symbols and traditions. Learn about the significance of their
decorative details such as swordsmen, sun wheels and boats. Try your
hand at leaf decorations and other crafts connected with midsummer’s
celebrations.
Celebrating
Midsummer on Åland
Each Midsummer Eve around 60 official midsummer poles are
erected in villages on Åland. Since each village has its own
traditions regarding the appearance of the pole, no two are
quite alike, with particular differences between eastern and
western Åland. While some are wreathed in brightly coloured
garlands of flowers, others are adorned with wreaths of birch
and leaf and juniper garlands. The pole is made of fir and
either has a single crossbar or a more elaborate design. The
pole is usually raised using brute strength and a block and
tackle. Traditions include dancing around the pole, singing
Åland’s National anthem and giving speeches.
The tale ‘Skonaren Maria’ (The Schooner Maria) by
Bertil Lindqvist takes its inspiration from the days of
the tall ships on Åland. See this realistic drama at the
this summer. Performances are in Swedish.
Come on Charlie!
Be carried away by Larry Shue’s comic farce ‘Kom Igen Charlie’,
(Come On Charlie!) in Badhusparken, Mariehamn. This
funny piece is easy to digest but contains some serious food
for thought. The play’s central theme is xenophobia and follows
the depressed Charlie who has happened upon a remote
guesthouse in southern USA. To avoid socialising with other
guests he pretends to be a foreigner who does not understand
the language. This leads to many laughs and a great deal of
tension, especially when we the Ku Klux Klan get involved.
‘Come on Charlie!’ is an adult play which is also suitable for
children of 10 yrs and up.
Performances are in Swedish.
May i have this dance?
Would you like to dance away a summer evening? We recommend
dancing on the pier at Restaurant Club Marin. The restaurant
is situated next to one of the largest guest mariners in
the north, ensuring an ever lively dance floor. The band plays
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. For those wanting to
dance on Saturdays, try the dance floor at Hotell Arkipelag’s
(Arken) Restaurant in Mariehamn. Here there is also a nightclub
and casino bar. Other dances are arranged on Åland during
the summer for example at Prästö Stugor & Camping or
a museum on red alert
Åland’s Fire Brigade Museum is a fun museum for big and
small firefighters alike. There is firefighting equipment and
lots of lovely fire engines you can get to grips with. The museum’s
oldest specimen is an A-Ford from 1926 and the newest
is a Volvo from 1969. When the children tire of the museum
make the most of the museum’s grounds. The grounds are
perfect for play and discovery with a large grassy area, sand
pit and the children’s own fire engine to climb in. Spraying
water at the village pump is fun too! Don’t miss the horses,
Åland Hunting & Fishing Museum blends in well amongst the sea
cabins in this old fisherman’s camp in Käringsund. This fascinating
museum is steeped in Åland’s hunting and fishing tradition and has
many interesting tales to tell. The exhibition areas highlight the toil
of the men, women and children who tended dragnets, hoop nets
and tackle. You can also cast your own animal-shaped souvenir in
pewter or join the pearl excavation.
do you hear
Hop aboard the safari train and meet the wild animals of
Eckerö’s game safari park. Meet the stags, Lilleman and Caesar
with their stately antlers, Strutte the ostrich, the big wild
boar Elvis Junior and his sows, Thelma and Louise and many
others. The guided tour brings you into close contact with the
animals. Sometimes the red deer are close enough to stroke
and the ostriches eat grass from your hand. The enclosure
always has plenty of little ‘sweeties’. The wild boars have litters
in April and red deer and fallow deer have their kids in
May and July.
The beautiful view of Åland’s coast and an interesting history
make Kobba Klintar at the entrance to Mariehamn’s western
maritime town. Today instead, modern cruise ships pass so
close you could almost touch them. On Saturdays and Sundays
during July the charter boat m/s Hagge will take you
lies the island of Källskär, which Baron Göran
Åkerhielm transformed into his own piece of paradise
during the sixties. This improbable treasure and the
beautiful scenery make Källskär well worth a visit.
the setting for the subsequent films. The boat ride from Simskäla in
Vårdö out to Väderskär, takes 40 minutes. The guided trip includes
coffee and sandwiches.
eckerö Golf has
something for everyone
everything a golfer
could wish for
Golfers love Åland Golf Club in Kastelholm, with its friendly
and informal feel. Being able to rent a golf buggy is also widely
appreciated. The club offers two fine 18-hole courses of differing
character and difficulty. Most beautiful is Slottsbanan, a
somewhat easier links course which partly extends along the
water. The challenges of Kungsbanan are both more demanding
and more stimulating. Round off the day with a sauna and
delicious dinner in the club’s restaurant.
fields give way to mountains, forests and country
lanes and every so often a glimpse of the sea. The
Length: approx. 18 km.
hiking in Åland’s
magical island world
Proximity to the sea, shifting scenery and short distances
between attractions make hiking on Åland a pleasure.
Throughout this island kingdom there are nature trails and
hiking paths of varying lengths and type. You will easily find
your own favourites. For those who like history there is for
example Kyrkleden, which stretches between Kastelholm
Castle and Bomarsund’s ruined fortress, partly following old
church paths. The medieval church at Sund is just one of the
interesting sights along the way. Start at Birka Skärgårdsbröd
in Kastelholm towards the tower at Bomarsund or vice versa.
Length: 13 km (approx. 4 hours).
a museum with
mariners at heart
Go on your own voyage of discovery amongst the model ships, figureheads
and other wonderful artifacts at Åland Maritime Museum. The
summer exhibition is about health and sickness on board. Step in to the
captain’s cabin from the barque Herzogin Cecilie or ponder the sailor’s
fun souvenirs and curio’s in the glass cabinets. Here you find a real pirate
flag. It is said that it is one of the only two remaining in the world.
a rare steel-hulled
4-masted beauty
The Museum Ship Pommern lies at anchor in Mariehamn’s western
harbour. This four-masted vessel is an impressive sight, especially
on the days that the sails are raised. Easy to imagine her
coursing the wheat-route to Australia. The 104 yr old Pommern
is the only freight vessel of her type in the world to be preserved
in her original condition. Today the former cargo holds, house
an exhibition of photographs, objects and films which describe
life on board. Don’t miss the summer exhibition, ‘Göran Schildt
– humanistic photographer’.
More to a camera
than meets the eye
This summer Åland Photography Museum is showing Nobel Prize
winner and polar explorer, Fritjof Nansen’s camera from his North
Pole expedition of 1893–1896. The museum’s fine collection
includes dark room equipment, and old photographic shop, cameras
and masses of accessories. Everything from antique 19 th century
examples to modern digital cameras.
experience kastelholm
Kastelholm’s heritage sight in Sund makes for a fascinating
outing. There is Kastelholm’s medieval castle with children’s
tours in July and August, the creepy prison museum,
Vita Björn, and Jan Karlsgården Open Air Museum, a typical
ålandic farm from the late 19 th century. Woodwork and
textile activities for children run daily during July, and every
Wednesday there is a display of traditional farm tasks such
as butter churning. When you tire of all this history, turn to
Jan Karlsgårdens Wärdshus for a jolly good meal.
fresh ingredients blend with the staggering view of the unending
sea. You can either take a table in the restaurant or out on the
When you want elevenses to be more than just a coffee, Uffe
Åland’s specialties
There are many high points during a visit to Åland and the
food is definitely one of them. Unique food experiences
include many fish dishes, the juicy black bread, e.g. from Birka
Skärgårdsbröd. And of course the traditional Åland Pancake,
commonly served on Åland with whipped cream, ’snömos’
(lit. mashed snow) and stewed prunes although strawberry
or raspberry jam is a common alternative.
Other delicacies include aromatic cheeses from ÅCA dairy,
products made from local sea buckthorn and ‘hemvete’, Åland
islander’s own daily bread. Great edible souvenirs from Åland
can be found in any grocery store.
Boil milk and rice or semolina to a smooth porridge and
allow to cool off. Beat together eggs and sugar and stir into
the porridge. Add flour, salt and cardamom. If the batter is
too thick add more milk. Grease an ovenproof dish or pan
and pour in the batter. Add a few knobs of butter. Bake in
the oven at 200°C for between 40–60 minutes. Serve with
stewed prunes or jam and whipped cream.
Jewellery from Guldviva
A visit to Guldviva jewellers in the Maritime Quarter is like climbing
inside a jewellery box. Here you’ll find lots of lovely presents for yourself
or a special someone. Each collection, of handmade necklaces,
rings, earring, and bracelets, has its own treasure of a name. Every
one loves ‘Flower’ but there is also ‘forget-me-not’, ‘hold-my-heart’
and ‘tiara’ to choose from.
sea-drenched
craft colony in the
Maritime Quarter
It is obvious why the artisans at SALT love their new location.
The building has fine views of the sea and has room
for both shop and atelier. Inside the door, beautiful arts and
crafts in textiles, silver, ceramics, wood and ironwork greet
you. The six resident artists sell their own work alongside that
of other Ålandic craftsmen by invitation. With so many beautiful
pieces to choose between it is often difficult to decide.
One of the artisans is always on hand to talk about the work,
which makes the visit even more fun.
