2008 Ben Ann Tomayko Award
This award recognizes an individual that has gone above and beyond in their years of
service to neighborhoods and best represents the spirit of volunteerism. It is named
after one of the founders of the Fort Worth League of Neighborhoods who was a true
pioneer for neighborhoods. ~Open to Fort Worth League of Neighborhood members only~
Individual you are nominating: Mrs. Joan Kline
Understanding that this award is for years of service and not a single project or event,
please describe how this person has provided years of service to our neighborhoods.
It is an honor that Ryan Place has the opportunity to nominate Joan Kline for the 2008 Ben Ann
Tomayko Award. Joan, matriarch of her family, her business; and the Ryan Place neighborhood, has
devoted her life to her husband and children; and to the betterment of the City of Fort Worth.
Moving into a declining neighborhood with her husband, Art, in the mid 1960’s, the Klines made a
home for their nine children. Art and Joan worked together revitalizing their house as well as the Ryan
Place neighborhood. Mrs. Kline was one of the founders of the Ryan Place Improvement Association,
the first neighborhood association in Fort Worth. The initial victory for the association was preventing
the City from making two neighborhood streets into one-way North and South bound thoroughfares.
This became the foundation of many RPIA accomplishments and other many endeavors performed by
Joan Kline.
Joan, at 79, has let “things that she has a great passion for” guide her life. Her selfless devotion is a gift
that she gives to her community and the city that she lives in and loves. Recognized for her years of
dedication to many endeavors she recently received the Historic Preservation Great Steward Award, in
2008. Additionally, she has received the Great Women of Texas, 2007 Legacy Award; Fort Worth
Texas Magazine, 40 Women who Run Our City, in 2004; Kline/Watts Citizen Advocate Award, Fort
Worth South, Inc., in 2002; United Hispanic Council, Gilbert Garcia Amiga Award, in 2000; and
Historic Preservation Lifetime Achievement Award, in 1992. In 2001, Mrs. Kline was honored by the
Fort Worth Independent School District by dedicating the Joan Kline Building located on the E. M.
Daggett Montessori Campus.
If one had had the foresight to log the volunteer hours that Mrs. Kline would give over 35 years of
community service, the sum would no doubt be many thousands. As a member, advisor, chairperson,
Director, or President of more than forty organizations, associations, charities, and activities, Joan has
generously contributed her time and energy. Joan Kline personifies the spirit of Ryan Place, not only
enriching our lives but all residents of the city of Fort Worth. Her family and the communities that hold
her in their hearts will be the recipients of Mrs. Kline’s talents, knowledge, and energy for generations to
come.
