Reuse of wastewater
Baix Llobregat wastewater treatment plant
in Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona
Approx. 4 million people live in and around Barcelona and
also the majority of the Catalonian industry is located in
this area.
The water supply to the town comes from groundwater
as well as treated water from the river of Llobregat that is
relatively saline.
Clear water
is a limited, however,
vital ressource in the
Mediterranean area.
Barcelona has taken the
consequences and now
reuses the treated
wastewater.
The aquatic
environment
in Catalonia
To reduce the use of the limited
water resources the Spanish Ministry
of the Environment has decided
to treat and reuse a part of the
town’s wastewater.
The treated wastewater is applied for irrigation of the
farm land around the river as well as some of the golf
courses in the area
Furthermore, a part of the treated wastewater is
returned to the river to maintain the water level and
ensure an increased flow
At the same time, a part of the treated wastewater is
led to a reverse osmosis plant for further treatment
and the water is pumped to the underground to
avoid salt water from the sea to seep into the groundwater
resources.
Baix Llobregat
wastewater
treatment plant
The plant is a activated sludge
plant and one of Europe’s larger
plants treating the wastewater
for approx. 2 million people and
having a capacity of 420,000 m³
wastewater/day.
The biological part of the treatment removes approx. 92%
of the suspended solids and the dissolved contamination
after which three-quarters are led to a tertiary treatment
and then reused.
The Baix Llobregat wastewater treatment plant is
operated by Depuradora del Baix Llobregat SA which is
a public company owned by the Spanish Ministry of the
Environment.
In comparison the
two plants in Copenhagen,
Lynetten and Damhusåen
operated jointly by Lynettefællesskabet,
treat wastewater corresponding
to 1.1 million people and
with a capacity of 220,000 m³
wastewater/day
Reuse of the wastewater
In cooperation with its Spanish sister company, Krüger
has designed and constructed the tertiary treatment
plant in Baix Llobregat.
The plant consists of 3 compact and very efficient Actiflo
plants and 10 Hydrotech disc filters for polishing of the
water. The total capacity is 302,400 m³ treated wastewater/day.
80%
The combination of Actiflo and the disc
filters provides a very robust and very
compact plant able to deal with very heavy
hydraulic loads and substances. This
combination ensures an 80%-reduction
of the area required compared to other
solutions of similar capacity and load.
Reuse of treated
wastewater
The tertiary treatment of
the wastewater on the Baix
Llobregat plant is performed by
means of the state-of-the-art
process ACTIDisc®
ACTIDisc® is a unique technology for reuse of treated
wastewater as the water quality obtained at any given
time complies with the current standards. At the same
time it is a very compact technology which is able to treat
large amounts of water on a relatively small area.
The ACTIDisc® is a state-of-the-art process developed by
Veolia for tertiary treatment of wastewater. The first phase
consists of settling by sand which is performed by means
of the Actiflo process. The second phase consists of
tertiary filtration by disc filters which is performed by
means of Hydrotech disc filters. The settling with ballasted
sand is performed in three Actiflo lines and the filtration
is performed in 10 Hydrotech disc filters with a mesh
width of 10 µm.
The Baix Llobregat
wastewater treatment
plant has an average
treatment capacity of
302,400 m³/day, and is
thus one of the world’s
largest recovery plants.
ACTIDisc®
Actiflo – settling by means of sand
The phase of settling by means of sand is performed in three
Actiflo lines, each line having a treatment capacity of 4,800
m³/t and a settling rate of 120 m/t.
In the flocculation phase, microsand particles are added to aid
the formation of flocs with a high density which increase the
settling rate by up to 60 times compared with conventional
processes. The process also comprises a unit of hydrocyclones
which makes it possible to recover the microsand and thus
reuse it in the process.
Untreated wastewater
Treated wastewater
Actiflo
comprises four phases:
Coagulation
Flocculation
Maturation
Lamella separation
Hydrocyclone
Ballasted flocs
to hydrocyclone
Hydrotech – tertiary filtration
After the settling phase, the water is led to 10 Hydrotech disc
filters with a mesh width of 10 µm which polish the recovered
water. Each disc filter has a capacity of 1,440 m³/t.
Hydrotech is a state-of-the-art filtration system with disc filters
which is very efficient and easily adjusted. The Hydrotech
system provides a very advanced filtration and is a compact
design which makes it very suitable for polishing of water on
plants with limited space available.
The advantages of the ACTIDisc® process
The water quality obtained by the ACTIDisc® process
is always better than any other quality obtained in
similar processes. ACTIDisc® guarantees reduced turbidity
and suspended solids and reduces the content
of helminth eggs.
The process is very reliable as the quality of the
treated water is maintained at a response time of
less than 20 minutes independently of the possible
variations in the quality of the inlet water.
A very compact process
The space requirements to the process plant are
minimal. Typically, providing space savings of up to
80% compared to conventional plants.
The process can be introduced on existing plants.
The space saving also reduced the construction costs.
The start-up of the ACTIDisc® process is very rapid
which reduces the costs related to chemicals, energy
and water.
The ACTIDisc® operates by gravitation (without
pumps) providing further energy savings.
