Umpiring Umpiring exam In May 2012, a total of 341 umpires sat the 2012 National Rules Exam, a 13% decrease from 2011. • ACT – 13 umpires sat the exam, a 18.75% decrease from last year • NSW – 101 umpires sat the exam, a 5% decrease from last year • NT – 0 umpires sat the exam, a 100% decrease from last year • Qld – 63 umpires sat the exam, a 25.8% decrease from last year • SA – 51 umpires sat the exam, a 9% decrease from last year • Tas – 6 umpires sat the exam, a 70% decrease from last year • Vic – 59 umpires sat the exam, a 12% decrease from last year • WA – 42 umpires sat the exam, a 9.52% increase from last year The National Rules Exam uses a database of more than 2,000 questions compiled by Leigh Evans (Vic), with the support of Graham Bancroft (WA) and Darren Sibraa (Qld). Supplementary umpire exams A supplementary exam was made available for Level 3 umpires and above who could not attend the National Rules Exam. SA x 1 NSW x 2 QLD x 3 65% pass 83% and 87% pass 83%, 81% and 79% pass Graham Bancroft (WA) has again assisted with specific rules tasks, in particular updating supplementary exams with new rules, online reference exams and proofing the basic exam rule references. The Softball Australia Basic Rules Exam for Levels 1 and 2 umpires was released in May 2010. Umpires can sit the exam any time up until 30 April 2012. The Exam provides greater flexibility and an easier pathway for entry level umpires to the umpiring program. The data will identify active and non-active umpires for the currency and accreditation requirements for the ASC. The NUC would like to acknowledge Darren Sibraa (Qld) for providing support and feedback on technical aspects of the program, Alan McAuliffe (SA), Darrell Shephard (NSW) and Graham Bancroft (WA) for help and support in delivering the technical stream of the National Umpiring Program. Umpiring resources Amanda Houison, UIC Communication, has been responsible for the production and distribution of Blues News Online (BNOL) every month. BNOL has covered both international and national events, from an Australian perspective, and looking forward, will include more grassroots news items. The umpiring section of the website is constantly being updated. The Umpire Honours & Awards page is now available, highlighting our umpires achievements and appointments.
