Umpiring exam<br />

In May <strong>2012</strong>, a total of 341 umpires sat the <strong>2012</strong> National Rules Exam, a 13% decrease from 2011.<br />

• ACT – 13 umpires sat the exam, a 18.75% decrease from last year<br />

• NSW – 101 umpires sat the exam, a 5% decrease from last year<br />

• NT – 0 umpires sat the exam, a 100% decrease from last year<br />

• Qld – 63 umpires sat the exam, a 25.8% decrease from last year<br />

• SA – 51 umpires sat the exam, a 9% decrease from last year<br />

• Tas – 6 umpires sat the exam, a 70% decrease from last year<br />

• Vic – 59 umpires sat the exam, a 12% decrease from last year<br />

• WA – 42 umpires sat the exam, a 9.52% increase from last year<br />

The National Rules Exam uses a database of more than 2,000 questions compiled by Leigh Evans (Vic), with the support<br />

of Graham Bancroft (WA) and Darren Sibraa (Qld).<br />

Supplementary umpire exams<br />

A supplementary exam was made available for Level 3 umpires and above who could not attend the National Rules<br />

Exam.<br />

Graham Bancroft (WA) has again assisted with specific rules tasks, in particular updating supplementary exams with new<br />

rules, online reference exams and proofing the basic exam rule references.<br />

The <strong>Softball</strong> <strong>Australia</strong> Basic Rules Exam for Levels 1 and 2 umpires was released in May 2010. Umpires can sit the exam<br />

any time up until 30 April <strong>2012</strong>. The Exam provides greater flexibility and an easier pathway for entry level umpires to<br />

the umpiring program.<br />
